It would be a scam if people made money off of convincing people that man-caused global warming is real. It’s not like Al Gore is trying to sell electric cars here.
I would be more inclined to believe that oil companies are the ones behind spreading the rumor that man-caused global warming is a myth.
Either the consequences of pollution are true, or not, pushing forward for a cleaner environment will not hurt everyone.

After having about “global warming” in geography class for the last half year, I believe that the globe is warming up (though we still don’t feel anything by it…). But if it’s human made? no one can tell. But by the facts that the earth’s average temperature is slowly growing I think it’s a good thing that we have people discussing consecvenses and precautions. Al Gore is only trying to make people see this…though he is highly exagurating and has been proven to lie about (or alter) some of the ‘facts’ he gives out.
I don’t care about this American-European bs though. We all (Europeans) say that Americans are stupid and ignorant, and yes…SOME are, but there’s stupid people everywhere :D…trust me, dumb people excist here en Europe aswell, I’ve seen it with my own eyes :D…

Earth stores energy in the form of carbon for billions of years. Humans release the stored energy of a million years in lest then 200 years. It’s math, not myth.

The real truth is, nobody knows exactly what’s going to happen, but something rather unpleasant is busy happening.
Also, nobody knows if it’s really because of us. Though our habit of digging up million-year-old carbon, combusting it and pumping it into the air is not helping.
It took millions of years for CO2 to be filtered OUT of the atmosphere. We’re pumping it back in over a few hundred years. The oceans will absorb some of it. That helps as a buffer, but in turn makes sea water more acidic, which in turn is bad for fish…
Fish is going to be a real big problem. Ocean temperature & acidity changes will cause changes in fish migration. Places we’re used to finding fish will see drops in population. That’s already happening.
As for melting ice, it’s true that floating ice won’t affect water volume. But most ice isn’t floating. The ice caps are land masses covered by ice. Greenland is covered by ice. But this will be a slow process.
Most worrying will be drought. We have it here in Australia, it’s not pretty, water shortages, etc. Luckily we have enormous underground aquifers.. but they won’t last forever and are incredibly expensive to “tap” for general use.
It’s a complicated set of problems, affecting each country differently. I fear we won’t give any thought to cooperation but instead battle over resources, as we see happening now over oil. Iraq is not the first “oil war” in history, but it’s probably the most reckless. I hope that doesn’t become a habit.

Comparing the polar ice caps of these two planets is rather ridiculous. The ice on mars is CO2, or dry ice. I’m sure you’ve all seen some at sometime. Do you notice how fast dry ice boils off into CO2 at room temperature? The daytime surface temperature is 20C(68F)- do the math. Not to mention, Mars is currently closer to the sun than it has been in a long time. Earth has an atmosphere that blocks out the vast majority of solar radiation; Mars’ atmosphere is roughly 100X less dense. Its also mostly CO2- the same gas that causes our global warming. Its such a simple equation, CO2 + solar radiation = heat. That heat in turn accelerates the melting of the caps, on both planets. Its just that the effect of the radiation is much smaller on Earth, and its the increase in CO2 caused by pollution that is causing our version of “global warming.”

We’ve only had thermometers for a little over 100 years and yet we’ll trust a slice of ice to tell us precisely what was going on millions of years ago? Give me a break.
Look at the correlation of solar activity (solar flares) and the concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere over time. Yep, that’s right. The most colossal energy source we have EVER, and WILL EVER know is responsible for our warming/cooling cycles. It’s also responsible for releasing huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere through the seas and oceans.
Though if you want to get political, it’s man burning coal, using deodorant and driving (sorry crawling) to work in his cars.
While I agree we need a lifestyle change to prolong the valuable resources we have, we are just a BLIP on the infinity that is time. If you’re telling me we can safely say we’re the sole and prime cause of “global warming” then you need to open those eyes a little wider.

You think you proved a point but you didn’t.
This is what you gave us:
1. A single person’s opinion (Habibullo Abdussamatov - is he a scientist, manager or what?) that global warming is caused by changes in the sun. Do ANY other people back him up? Don’t give us one opinion, give us scientific consensus or at least evidence of a body of research saying this. Else it means nothing.
2. A number of quotes indicating some other planets are going thru a warming period. Second question for you: What if anything does one planet’s warming have to do with another’s, given they all have different structures, core temperatures, atmospheres, etc?
If you don’t know the answers to the above, your argument doesn’t mean anything. I’m not saying you’re right or wrong, just that you have not put forward a case with any substance.
This is our problem: The world is doing what we are doing right now in miniature - arguing about who put the hole in the deck while the ship sinks.
It’s happening. Become part of a solution or get out of the way and let people do what needs to be done to secure our food, energy, safety and future.

I like it in the US and I go there at least 3 times a year, mostly to NY and LA for work. But I still can’t believe intelligent adult people can life as most Americans do. As someone here describes it, most people take their SUV out of the garage to go buy a pack of potato chips.
Considered that most Americans do not even know exactly what countries Europe consists of without consulting some wiki, the question a 16year old asked me three weeks ago in NY explains itself: “Do you have fridges in Europe?” Praise ignorance.
But I won’t let an ignorant giant destroy Earth. Who was the ONLY country not to agree on putting some numbers into the final agreement during last week’s climate conference in Bali? The US. At the same time, the US is the numer one CO2 producing country. Wonderful.

Last but not least: the film that gave all of us the reason to start this discussion already made its point, if it’s good or not does not really matter. But it wakes people up, even here.
I used to work for big oil. They are by no means good, but neither are they evil. In fact the multinational I was with had a different branding strategy every where I was sent around the world.
In fact the irony is, the company and other related companies only did what we could get away with legally in the worst case, if we chose to go down that path.
So its up to you the people and your legislators to ensure a free and accountable society if you live in a democracy, and well if not then tough luck I guess.
Grass roots activism is quite powerful. In America, it will only be at the behest of the people that any of these souless wankers we call politicians will bother doing anything about green tech and global warming. Remember they reflect you, not the other way around.
Petroleum will be around for quite some time, we will continue to use it. That does not mean we cant make massive investments into green technology and subisidise it now.
By the way, a lot of the energy companies have massive green initiatives. In the future they will become integrated ‘energy companies’. Don’t be surprised down the track if your new house you will be buying panels from BP’s Solar Division, or Hydrogen from Chevron.
The oil companies will survive, adapt and diversify. They have people working on it right now.

First, for all those that haven’t provided any FACTS about their opinions, global warming refers to an increase in the world’s temperatures.
Ask for what is causing the world’s temperatures to rise, that’s another question. The fact that temperatures are rising is of concern, for everyone on this planet.
Instead of living in denial, or blaming everything else, you might ask, what can we do to stabilize the situation.
Does creating pollution make this planet a better place for all? Scientist all over the world and common sense tells you that pollution doesn’t make a better place for all to live.
Every automobile burning gasoline creates deadly exhaust fumes. Don’t beleive me, then stick your nose in the exhaust pipe when the automobile engine is turned on and breathe in these fumes for yourself to experience.
Everything on this planet is limited, and that does include oil. So even if you all think pollution isn’t bad, or whatever, given time ahead, there will be no more oil to burn. Then how will you and the rest of the world enjoy all those things that oil once produced?
The facts are, developing countries use energy, which oil among concrete, steel and electronics play a huge role. I am sure everyone reading this blog is using some form of technology, be the electricity used to power your computer, the computer itself you are using, and certainly the Internet connection, etc…
All technologies are tools, but how we use them is of most concern, as knowledge by itself isn’t wise, it’s when we apply our wisdom in what we do that does…
There is nobody on this planet that cannot say, change isn’t taking place. The question is are you going to CARE about how these changes, so you can adapt, or change with these changes or find yourself unable to cope, to deal with the given situation?
By the way, the very air you breathe, isn’t made by humans. Where do you think all this air comes from? If you destroy the environment by polluting it, or you fail to protect this niche to insure your own survival, then you have failed for no other reason but your own stupidity, as everyone knows we are NOT doing enough to take care of what we already have.
The oceans, the land, the very skies that make up our environment are becoming more polluted. This pollution is human made, by human beings.
The solution is to change our economy to a green recyclable and sustainable system, not based upon greed and corruption for the acquisition of wealth.
We can all fight over the limited resources, killing each other, or we could and should realize the importance to cooperate together to find solutions that provide us all the answers to these problems.
Another thing, why are you so afraid to be part of the solution? Maybe you NEVER learned to love this world or another?
One thing is sure, our past thinking is what got us where we are today, so it’s going to require something new for us ahead to change our beliefs, our ways of thinking to allow new solutions.
We simply cannot afford to conduct business as usual, to assume the Earth is flat, at the center of the Universe. We need to be responsible, as individuals, as businesses and as governments. All things make models of themselves, and so we ourselves can become a part of the whole solution or we can continue this wasteful denial.

If however you really believe that man isn’t having a significant detrimental effect on the environment you dont deserve the ability to use that environment.
