Russia has always been a European country. Most populated parts, including Moscow, are in Europe. Strangely enough, even Israel is sometimes considered as a European country. If I were you, I’d blame it on your poor education.

You realize that “non-American made movie” doesn’t automatically make it good, right? I’ve seen a lot (and I mean A LOT) of films in my life, and I can honestly say that there are probably more crappy titles produced outside Hollywood than within it. Japanese crap, Russian crap, Turkish crap… Italian, French, Korean, or British crap… You name it. As for Russians, I am pretty knowledgeable about the culture and I’ve seen at least 15 of their movies in the past years. I won’t say that all of them were bad (even though some of them were pretty much unwatchable), but none of these movies was as good as some of the best stuff made in California. Europe and Asia may occasionally produce their Black Book (Zwartboek), Pianist, or Infernal Affairs, but Hollywood is the home of Godfather, Schindler’s List, and The Shawshank Redemption. You may, no doubt about it, criticize most of its produce, but please let’s not get carried away here, okay?

By the way, retarded Hollywood flicks like Day After Tomorrow usually tend to be considerably more successful abroad than at home. For this particular crapfest: domestic income $186,740,799, foreign income $356,030,973. Compare it to Scent of A Woman, which is arguably much more intelligent and better filmed title: domestic $63,095,253, foreign $71,000,000.

Russian Ark was a good russian movie as it chronicles Russian history through the Heritage museum althuogh you want to kill the narrator that you follow as he is annoying. It would be interesting if they had the same concept with american history through a famous historical US landmark building.

  26. Bob
    July 19th, 2007 | 17:15

    that’s “Hermitage” not “Heritage” museum
US history… would be a pretty short film eh

  27. fghf
    July 19th, 2007 | 17:20

Boo, no need for suicide, though it’s your choice of course. I would instead suggest leaving out your appeal to authority and instead use your knowledge of film to give us a more convincing argument as to why US films are the best. For instance, I’m interested in your opinion of how Slacker compares to La Chinoise.

  28. Boo
    July 19th, 2007 | 17:28

40,000 years of history of the indigenous peoples, 500 years of post-Columbian colonization, and almost 250 years of history of one of the world’s most populous, productive, powerful, and socially and ethnically diverse nations would surely make a hell of a short movie. If filmed by one hell of an ignorant bastard, that is.

  29. Boo
    July 19th, 2007 | 17:57

Fghf, I never said that US-made films are the best. I have my deep respect for many European and Asian films, and I completely agree that there’s a huge amount of Hollywood-made abominations out there that can be easily seen as crimes against humanity (i.e. “are particularly odious offenses in that they constitute a serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or a degradation of one or more human beings”) by any of their viewers who are not mentally challenged. What I said is that there are also plenty of Hollywood made movies that are intelligent, engaging, well-acted, well-filmed, and that are considered by many people to be ones of the best films ever created on this planet. As for your question, I can only barely remember La Chinoise, and I haven’t even seen Slacker (which is a non-Hollywood independent movie, by the way) to give you any kind of comparative analysis between those two. Besides, I don’t really see how an arbitrary comparison like that would allow you to make any kind of a reasonable or accurate conclusion about the movie industry in general.

    July 19th, 2007 | 18:11

    @Boo

Day after Tomorrow was bashing US government unlike any other Hollywood crap movie, of course non USA it was more successful, it was an environmental themed movie with an action surface.

Of course Hollywood makes masterpieces, it produces maybe 100 times more movies than Europe as whole. Now, look how many masterpieces of 2007 came out of Hollywood, and then see how European movies did – the ratio of bad/good movies is in Europe much better, and even better for countries with little support for domestic movies, because their trouble to fund a movie sorts out real crap, and you get moderate to good movies, and sometimes masterpieces. But Hollywood floods with crap, I mean, insulting movies just to sell material to fill all the TV channels – there is no art left in those movies.

I appreciate the Hollywood masterpieces, so Japanese, Russian, German, UK, France, and so on – just look “Das Leben der Anderen” (German Drama), this is a masterpiece Hollywood cannot produce and never will, because the studio bosses who interfere to final cuts have no taste for such quality and depth of human nature.

Was Terminator 3 (domestic $150,371,112; foreign $283,000,000) also an anti-American movie? How about The Da Vinci Code (respectively $217,536,138 and $540,703,713)? With all due respect, European and Asian viewers are way more more interested in mindless summer blockbusters that have little to offer but colorful explosions and CG special effects.

As for insulting movies and overall bad/good movie ratio, you forget that most of US-made crap gets worldwide releases, when similar quality international movies only get viewed by their local audience and completely miss the world’s attention. Just watch a couple of Italian horror, Russian “mafia”, or Japanese violence-themed (not to mention their Gojira/Godzilla series) movies, and I promise you, your overall view of American movie industry will improve significantly.

All time box office worldwide (domestic included) grosses:

  32. Me
    July 19th, 2007 | 18:52

The Da Vinci Code – this is a great themed movie, but the movie itself is a disgrace. It’s a very atypical Hollywood flick, because it deals with deep spiritual topics, but in a way the american wants: easy digestable, and this why the movie fails entirely.

T3 – hmmm, I have no argument to back up this.

Since torrent I watch more mediocre to bad movies Hollywood movies, stuff I never have seen on TV (I’m locate in Europe) and I’m surprised how bad movies can be.

Anyway, the pressure to get more content for european TV is almost as strong like US TV – the quality of TV here gets like US TV – entertainment for the stupid masses (think of Fox and Fox News alike entertainment right-wing infotainment) – that the Simpsons run on Fox is amazing, like the S18E22 making fun of Fox itself is brilliant.

don’t be a schmuck about it.

    @Boo
You can’t compare dollar amount without saying in how many countries/movie theaters it was shown. US has 300 mill people, the rest of the world is another 5.7 billion. So, those numbers don’t mean anything in the your context.

“I am pretty knowledgeable about the culture and I’ve seen at least 15 of their movies in the past years”

I never knew that would possibly qualify you as knowledgeable of their culture. Absurdity in its highest form. Say no more…

The posts in this thread are overly typical of a foreign movie that may or may not be good. It usually starts with
“Wow, finally a movie thats not hollywood trash!”
“STFU US movies are da shiznit!”
“You amaze me with your coherent response”
“STFU FAG w/ yr cock rent rponce!”

People, lets not bicker. Good movies are geographically independent. It’s the distribution abilities and the politics that divide us. Those claiming themselves to be movie lovers, d/l this with an open mind and don’t waste your time trying to find comparisons.

No matter which country you are from, cram your national pride up your grampa’s ass because it blinds you.

  39. Atlas

  40. Boo
    July 19th, 2007 | 20:53

I spent years in Russia, Ukraine, and Baltic countries. I can partially understand the [Russian] language, and I sure as hell have a basic understanding of the culture. Please don’t make an idiot out of yourself by making false logical assumptions.

As for my comparison figures, if you look at the numbers, you’ll see that movies like The Sixth Sense (43.6%), Dances with Wolves (43.4%), Godfather (55.1%), The Silence of the Lambs (47.9%), or even Gone With The Wind (49.6%) generally get higher domestic to foreign box office grosses ratios than special effects filled summer blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy, Titanic, or Day After Tomorrow. Not to mention that a good portion of US sale figures (~35%) goes from the opening weekends, when viewers walk into movie theaters without any prior knowledge of the quality of the movies (misleading trailers obviously don’t count). Foreign viewers, on the other hand, often have some time to check the reviews, IMDB scores, etc., and avoid most horrid titles altogether. Anyway, it’s not the number of viewers I’m talking about, but general trends easily visible from the percentage figures. European and Asian moviegoers like big, mindless and CG-filled titles no less than Americans do. That’s a fact. European and Asian movie collections have a lot of crappy titles in them. That’s also pretty much a fact. How about we stop arguing about this, forget our cultural differences for a moment and concentrate on positive sides of the very same movie industry? I mean most of you visit this place to check for the latest movie releases, and, since I don’t see many Bollywood made titles around here, I assume that you at least like some of the stuff you download; otherwise you wouldn’t be here, would you?
