Operation Ivy – Operation Ivy (Remastered) [2007]

OpIvy - EnergyHere is another sweet release from group pLAN9. It’s the acclaimed “Energy” album by Ska-Punkers Operation Ivy. This is pretty much a legendary record in the punk scene so if you’re into punk and haven’t heard it yet you should definitely give it a try. If you’re not into punk you can still enjoy this album due to its ska influences. It simply makes you want to jump around :P ! “Theres a war comin down between my brothers and I! I don’t want NO WAR goin down, goin down tonight!!”

Operation Ivy was a ska/punk band that originated from the East Bay of San Francisco and was active from 1987 through 1989. Their name was derived from the Operation Ivy series of nuclear tests. Two of their members, Armstrong and Freeman, also perform(ed) with the bands Rancid (their current, and biggest project), Basic Radio, Downfall and Shaken 69.

Energy is the only full album released by the band. It has been cited as one of the most important albums of the ska-punk genre. Energy was released twice, the second time with the addition of eight tracks. The original release (1989) was only nineteen tracks and released only on Vinyl and Cassette. The 1991 CD release added tracks from other albums. Tracks twenty through twenty-five were originally on the Operation Ivy EP Hectic, while the tracks “Officer” and “I Got No” were taken from the Turn It Around compilation. In 2004 Hellcat Records re-released the nineteen track version as a 12″ LP picture disc.

In 2006, the album was ranked as the highest rated punk album ever on Sputnikmusic.

This is the 2007 remastered (i.e. improved sound) version of the album. For some reason they have called the 2007 reissue “Operation Ivy” instead of “Energy”. Unfortunately I can’t find any public tracker torrent right now but I’m sure someone nice will put up a link in the comments! Remember to support this band by getting this CD if you like them. I’m wearing my OpIvy shirt right now :D .

    Real punk music died in the very early 80’s, and if you want to listen to real ska start by listening to the original british/jamaican stuff of the 60s. Thats proper ska.

    Nice work, used to love this album, I think it’s that sound system song that should be the one-off track to keep with probably take warning as the second best.

    @ 3, 4,

    Electronic music is TERRIBLE. people pushing buttons and clicking on mice to make sounds, at least punks play instruments.

    @23 R3dS0x_PROPER
    The same arguments were used back in the 50’s and 60’s when the Electric Guitar was used to make music.
    Anything that can be used to make a sound and then used to make music with it you can consider to be an instrument.
    You know how many bands use a Synthesizer?
    I’m pretty sure loads of bands you listen to make use of this instrument.
    And the artist using it is only pushing buttons to make sound.
    So please don’t say no punk band is using a Synth as I seen plenty who do use one.

    OMG are these guys like EMO? lol just kiddin’ . used to listen to this 12″ back in high school. i was fortunately enough to live in the bay area at the time, so i got to see these guys play regularly before the singer went nuts and gone off to become a monk.. classic album, brings back so much memories.. you’re doing a great job ReeGed, keep it up!

    the next music post better not be a punk-genre related release.. otherwise it would be quite clear the music posts are now being handled by someone with a biased taste in music.
