Opera attacks Microsoft’s monopoly policy

Microsoft has once more come under fire for allegedly anti-competitive behaviour – this time from software rival Opera. The Norwegian company, which makes an internet browser of the same name, has filed a complaint with European Union officials accusing Microsoft of stifling competition. Opera, which has around 12 million users worldwide, said today that Microsoft had been acting anti-competitively by bundling its Internet Explorer program with the Windows operating system. “We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them,” said Jon von Tetzchner, the chief executive of Opera. “We cannot rest until we’ve brought fair and equitable options to consumers worldwide.”

The company said it was looking for a series of measures from European officials, including forcing Microsoft to unbundle Internet Explorer or allowing rival products to be preinstalled in Windows, and compelling Microsoft to follow design guidelines issued by web standards groups. “Computer users have complete freedom of choice to use and set as default any browser they wish,” the company said in a statement. Last year the EU fined Microsoft a record €280m in a similar antitrust battle over its Windows Media Player software. Opera’s claims are closely modeled on the high-profile case against Microsoft pursued by the US government in a six-year battle over the integration of Internet Explorer into the Windows operating system. I’m slowly getting tired of all these “best browser” debates and counteractions of competitive companies…

    You’re an idiot eitanois…

The problem with internet explorers and such is the fact that ‘the stupids’ (i.e. the computer illiterate) don’t realise that there are choices. Most people don’t want the choice, they just want to explore the internet as quickly as possible and giving them the choice might make their little halo-3-fanboy heads explode.

“they just want to explore the internet as quickly as possible”

    with IE? …HAH!

I use Opera mostly and firefox a bit. Opera definitely IS the fastest browser i’ve ever used…however with some web admins not testing their site with it, on a rare occasion you will find a site that doesn’t work completely. like 1 in 1000.,

i use Opera and firefox, the reason i use both is, Opera can be a damn system hog, using 99% of CPU, and as my Quad hasnt arrived this is annoying, and firefox because its fast reliable and good. Opera would be much better if they fixed the damned bugs. I used Explorer years ago, but that damn stuff added so many toolbars and crap, even with Spyware software that it was futile.

I used Opera for a year then Firefox & Mozilla on Linux for a year and when I changed to 64bit Vista there was only IE at the time.
Any who im still using it, I installed the newest Firefox the other day and it looked so dated.

I did have to install IE7 pro 1.2 so that if it crashes it reopens with the same tabs, but I had a plugin that did the same in Firefox.

I am so fed up of these companys trying to make money off someone else. They should go after Apple next since it comes with safari but they won’t because everyone has a grudge against microsoft, Has the EU gone after apple with itunes? nope. Everyone is trying to make a dollar and don’t care about consumers, why should microsoft make a product which does not include the programs a features to make a better experience for the consumer. It should come with all these programs and it should be the consumers choice to use it or not. What next, I can’t get seats in my new car because there are other copmanies that make seats and if my car came with seat I wont get theirs. Another thing is that better for stability and less frustatration when simple program like IE and WMP come with the system, it works better and if there is a problem you go to one guy, not three different people pointing the finger at the other guy, ie opera to microsoft then to your ISP back to opera then to security software then to microsoft.

@13. Yeah, but what about the other 99.9% of the world, who just want to browse for porn and funny vids? ;-)

Now, going back to the original topic, I don’t get what Opera are getting their knickers in a bunch about. (and usually, I’m an M$ hater!) – The way I see it, IE is not forced on anyone. It’s just a peripheral that’s part of an OS package. You don’t see people at Winamp or VLC complaining about Windows Media Player, do you?

…and I agree with whoever said ‘How are you going to get Firefox/Opera/your choice of browser, without an initial browser on your operating system?’ – Who the hell is going to use a DOS emulator to get hold of a browser?

Judging from the comments here, regardless of whether you use IE, Opera, Firefox, Safari or whatever browser you prefer, it demonstrates that the complaint that Opera are trying to sue Microsoft over is wrong! Microsoft aren’t monopolising anything on the subject of their peripherals. It’s the O/S that should be targeted for lawsuits regarding monopolisation.

IE7 still sucks ass & balls though..! :-D

Pretty dumb on Opera’s part, if it wasn’t for Microsoft, they wouldn’t exist. And of course they’re gonna pack in IE with Windows, it MSoft!!

I’m not a MSoft fanboy, but take a look at Apple/Mac. Can you buy a apple/mac made by anyone else but them? No. Is there an Acer Mac, or other brand of Mac? Nope. THAT is a monopoly when third party companies cannot make your machine.

The reason MSoft is so successful is that ANYONE can go and build a PC and use Windows on it. Or go to Staples or where ever and have options as to what to buy, and from which company. With Mac’s you get it made by Apple. No one else. And from the look of the iMac’s I see, upgrading those things is IMPOSSIBLE, meaning you need a whole new one every two years. I say that is something people should be going after, cuz the Mac’s are expensive, but guaranteed to be no good in two years and can’t be upgraded.

    Bye Bye!!

I’m all for MS complying with net standards because it wouldn’t half make web designers happy and things would overall run and look better, but not included IE as standard? Hmmm I’m not too sure about that. I mean sure….it’s not a great browser and most people in the know wouldn’t use it but the vast majority couldn’t give a rats arse what browser they use. Not including it as standard with Windows would just likely lead to confussion for the dumb masses….actually maybe that’s a good thing?

if microsoft has any sense all you need to do is when u first lauch internet on a clean install it asks wat explorer u wish to install, weather it be op ,fire , or good old ms exp, give a small percent of sales too the companys ,keeps them happy, they prolly will sell my copys of their os its a good marketing point so keeps them happy out of trouble, consumer happy cause of the choice ,

i think its pretty stupid taking i.e out of vista i would say xp but its only got 6mths of life left to be able to buy it, it is part of windows always have been , the others copied it by rights , but its good to have lots of choice it keeps new things comming out better each time , and the others are only a little more sercure than i.e because the hackers go for what most people use ,bit like apple their os is only secure or used to be they been under attack a little lately because only 5% on the market is macs .

using opera for years no (since back 2002 or so, not sure) and it has everything I need and ever wanted. tried firefox but wäähhh it takes me 10 minutes to configure opera the way I want it and in firefox I have to fidle with a dozend addons to make it working the way I want it with everything I need.

The thing with IE is, IE has its own “standards” and these are quiet different form the webstandards. occasionaly you will stumble over sites that are “optimized” for IE and appear “buggy” with opera/firefox and telling you “use IE cause it is teh sh14t”

so sue MS they pretty much deserve it!

I am using Opera for at least 7 years. And I am still using it along with Firefox. Firefox is useful whenever you want to use its plugins. But other than that it is almost the same as IE.

BTW, MS should allow its users to select the browser they want. If MS can bundle its OS with IE, Firefox, and Opera and the users can uninstall any browser he wants. Now that is a true competition.

Microsoft’s newest operating system, Vista is approaching OSX in terms of market share. This should come as no surprise since there are millions on millions more PCs than there are Macs but still, Vista is now installed on at least 5% of PCs meaning it is only 1% away from topping OSX and only 1.1% away from passing it.

somebody goes to the store and buys MS XP _without Mediaplayer edition,
and later goes back to the store becaus he cannot play his audio-cd’s,he demands a refund.

then another version appears on the shelves
XP(vista) without explorer (we use NC),without Wordpad (we use openoffice),without mediaplayer (we use Nero),no InternetExplorer (we use FF,Opera, whatever),since you can download it somewhere (funny enough, the majority doesn’t know any other options than using a browser)
then the customer goes to the store to buy this version and the employee says: this is the only version allowed in the EU, you have to pay additional 30€ for a browser,30€ for a mediaplayer, etc
or you can buy this all in one XP/Vista package for the same price…

the EU (Nelie smit kroes, holland still hates her for the failures she left behind),currently only uses Microsoft for lowering the debt of the countries behind the iron curtain

Well i’m europan and opera/firefox user, and i still think that this attack is absolutely ridiculous!

It’s not MS fault if Opera cannot manage to have a bigger share of users, Opera’s features are just not following the wishes of the majority (like plug-ins, great adblocker: the one in opera is way too simple and inefficient).
Opera is also still years away from the “compatibility” of FF with websites, so until they fix this, they’ll still be a distant third…

And complaining that IE should not be integrated in WS, wtf!?
How would we able to acces internet after the OS install if there was no browser already integrated?
It’s not like WS was preventing users to install other competitor software.

  55. Sranshaft

I’m with Bnutz on this one. Is anyone up in arms over Apple including everything under the sun in their OS? With Leopard, they’ve now included virtualization, virtual desktops, web browsers, backup software, you name it, it’s now in Leopard effectively putting all of the 3rd party developers whose living is made from these applications. Hell, they even include a suite of applications from desktop publishing to video creation. Anyone crying foul to the EU over this? No.

Microsoft is in the business of making software and selling said software. It’s a case of an open and free market. It’s up to these developers to get in touch with the computer makers to include their products bundled with new computers; not complain to the EU when no one wants their software. It happened with Real Networks in the 90s. There was a reason no one wanted that piece of software and it wasn’t because of Microsoft and Windows Media Player.

With Opera, they’re crying foul because they ‘only’ have 12 million users? 12 million users of their software is pretty good when you think of all the other browsers that came and went. They’re still around for a reason. If users want to use their browser, they will. Don’t cry to the EU about it.

I’m really starting to wonder say in 10 years, the way things are going over there in Europe, what Microsoft’s OS ‘will’ include…it’ll be a barebone OS without anything included. When that happens, I’m sure everyone will be crying over having an OS that is virtually unusable out of the box and will require searching for every piece of software.

Maybe if Microsoft went to some sort of apt-get like feature as in Linux, this sort of thing wouldn’t happen but then who knows. There’ll always be something these people will cry over. (Wah!! My piece of software is all the way at the bottom of the download list! Boo-hoo).

ms will never take out stuff ,i mean they wouldnt be able to sell vista in europe with half the stuff for the same as say in the states where it woud be included , cause like guy said above u would have 2 go looking for everything and i would just d/l a pirate copy from the states be easier , so theres a problem that ms would have
all u do is just play around with the pricing ,u make vista basic wat no 1 buys have none of the stuff included on it ,keeps um legal ,lose money on it , but make money by not gettin fined , thats prolly why there is a basic vista a loop hole in the law ,remember xp is only on 6mths extended sale so they aint gotta worry bout that o.s
at the end of day the price of o.s dont go up theres just a basic verson wat no1 buys. pretty much wat is avilable now since basic aint got nothing in it anyway,

Apple cannot be target for anti-trust since in order for a company to be accused to anti-trust they need to have a monopolic position (Which M$ has with 70% of market share) which they are taking advantage of, which they do. Apple has something like 10%..

Also IE7 (Microsoft’s latest and greatest) fails ACID2 test which basically says that they *do not* follow W3C standards. ACID2 results you get with IE7 are same as Opera 3.60, which btw has been made 9 years ago :P

I love Opera and it’s the best and fastest webbrowser at this planet and I hope that this will force IE Team to follow standards and stop slowing down every frikkin process in W3C and make life easier for all webdesigners out there!

Something I will complain about IE and Windows (pick your favorite one), is that Windows NEEDS IE to work.

You cannot update Windows XP without using IE, since it’s only compatible with that browser, for a fact.

And regarding the Mac ‘monopoly’… Hold on a minute: Mac is a trademark, a certain type of computer, so the answer is no, Acer, HP, Dell or whatever company will not start manufacturing Macs. Although, something that is in fact true is that the Mac OS cannot be legally installed on a computer other than a Mac, so that is in fact a valid arguement.

Internet Explorer should not be a required part of the system, meaning that it could be safely uninstalled without losing ANY functionality.

    Oh and yeah, Firefox rules.

Not everbody is a geek who can use ftp or irc or p2p to download software. Microsoft is perfectly right in installing a default browser with OS. I mean Its completely logical MAN! Imagine if you bought a SO that cannot play music, cannot browse the net, cannot even see pictures because they are not allowed to ship the product with it’s own software.
There’s the idiot alternative of course,to put other company’s programmes.Of course, that would that they would have to buy the software(milions at least) and even if they would somehow manage to buy the software, imagine an SO on 10 Blu-rays because of the multitude of software.300 for imageviewers,500 movieplayers,10 browser, etc.
Let’s go beyond that and say that somehow they would do all of the above. How the hell would anyone be able to choose one of them all?Never mind the fact that most are pieces of garbage

So build your own OS Opera, friggin Whiners. If your product is good enough, people will download and use it. Firefox is good enough, people use it. My goodness, everyone has to cry rivers over everything. If they want their software to be pre-installed, they should build their own operating system.

They should attack Apple as well, they put Safari on there! Those evil bastards, but no, we don’t attack them. They’re not big enough.

Even If microsoft ships default programs with OS which obviously kinda neccesary for daily work because when u first install in OS u need such programs like a media player, internet browser and all that. After that U can install any browser u want if u dont like default programs. people always have a choice so whats the problem in that. Why Opera is whining? If theit browser is better obviously they will get downloads.

Everyone just likes to blame microsoft and they are the same ppl who use MS OS daily. kinda ironical isn’t it?

    yayy 80th post :P

opera works good for me , i think they started the whole tabbed browsing thast eventually other browsers caught up too , but you gotta love those who started it , also firefox is successful only on the fact that it is very similar to IE , maybe in interface .. all said and done

    hail opera !

    cheers

This is like complaining about the radio that comes with your car, and amounts to buying a new car, only to find that it has no radio, yet when you first start the car, a message might play through the speakers saying “if you want a factory stereo, go to Toyota; if you want a Pioneer stereo, go to a Pioneer shop; if you want.. *ad nauseum*”.

Most people, if they don’t like the factory radio (like me) will pull it out and replace it with something decent. Who the he11 goes back to the car maker and sues them for preinstalling a radio?

    It’s just dumb.

And it’s not like Opera is losing money considering their browser is now free.

  77. why u care?
    December 13th, 2007 | 19:45

people who hate microsoft are sad, u only hate them coz they are a rich company, and hey its fun to hate the rich company and become part of the little haterz group, i bet u are using windows nw. windows is their product so why cant they add stuff they have made to it? if u dont like the fact they add stuff to their own product anyway then go cry in a corner.

    its pathetic

You all forgot that when u uninstall IE many other NON-MS appz will stop working correctly ;/
Personally I don’t use IE – I’m just having it for the appz which uses it.
About Firefox and add-ons – use Mozilla SeaMonkey and u will not have to install any add-ons.
I once installed Opera and browser is fine but finding some widgets that I wanted was much more difficult than on FF.
Opera owners make one thing wrong – started as pay software – this is why now FF is most popular not-bundled browser on the market ;)
We all have own choice so use it ;)

I’m not a huge MS fan but come off it the Opera stance is a joke. “We are filing this complaint on behalf of all consumers who are tired of having a monopolist make choices for them,” said Jon von Tetzchner, the chief executive of Opera.” I chose Firefox, no monopolist chose for me or said I couldn’t. Sheesh, as if we’re all clueless lambs that exclusively dance to the tune of MS. I will at least credit Gates for having the smarts to license his OS to all and sundry. Had Apple done the same two decades ago, instead of being so elitist, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.

«Another thing is that better for stability and less frustatration when simple program like IE and WMP come with the system, it works better and if there is a problem you go to one guy, not three different people pointing the finger at the other guy, ie opera to microsoft then to your ISP back to opera then to security software then to microsoft.»

    That’s not “stability”, that’s monopoly.

For the ones complaining that no one goes after Apple… well, they don’t have a monopoly in anything they produce. They may sell more mp3 players than anyone else, but that doesn’t make a monopoly.

Dont unbundle IE, that would be a bad thing. How would we get on the internet in the first place to download opera or firefox without ie..

Gah, microsoft should be able to do what they want, no one likes rivals and they shouldnt have to move for them.

    @ 22 Fatburger

You must be a mac-hater and/or a completely biased moron. Has the thought ever occurred to you that because Microsoft was founded and there were no competitors the first year or so that APPLE was founded to be it’s competitor?

APPLE was created to stimulate competition with MICROSOFT.
Not the way you’re telling everyone. Which is, “Apple Inc. has it’s own computer and they came out of nowhere and they built their own OS and they won’t let anyone touch their OS blah blah blah. They’re a monopoly.” You fking twat.

That’s the same thing as you saying that a chef who created his own special sauce for his pasta is being monopolistic because he isn’t sharing the recipe with his competitors next door. Why don’t we just sue the chefs for keeping their sauce exclusive to their own restaurant. He, THE CHEF, created it HIMSELF so he is entitled to keeping it for himself so long as every other business in corporate America doesn’t go bankrupt.

That’s why there’s mac and linux. To compete with windows.
Please, if you’re going to think to yourself that you’ve got down an argument think outside that little box of yours.

OperaTor is the best. im behind great china firewall. OperaTor lets me go around all that, full anonymity, you can install it in your flash drive and use it anywhere. dont have install, just plug-in your flash drive. very useful.

IE was better than Netscape. But yeah Firefox Modzilla is better than IE now. I use all 3. all of them have their up and downs.

    LOL @ comment #15

And I use both Firefox AND Opera. Whenever FF seems to “crash” on me I use Opera. I stay away from IE. Even on Linux I use FF & Opera.
