Opera 9.5 with anti-malware protection

On Friday Opera announced that version 9.5 of the browser (download Opera 9.5 beta for Windows or Mac) will include built-in anti-malware protection from Haute Secure. This is, of course, to counter the anti-malware protection built into Firefox 3, currently available as a final release candidate . Firefox uses data from Google and StopBadware to block a site before it loads on your browser. Haute Secure counters that its offering is better because it relies upon a community of dedicated users to inform the product when to block and when not. In testing at CNET, the latest version of Haute Secure still misses some recently published phishing sites, while Firefox 3 RC2 blocked them immediately.

How did that happen? Haute Secure explains that the APIs provided by anti-phishing sites such as PhishTank won’t update until the site is confirmed to be bad, whereas Google can make that determination on its own. Still, Haute Secure prevents malicious sites (as opposed to mere phishing sites) from loading, and provides more information about those sites than does Firefox 3. Haute Secure was founded by a group of former Microsoft employees, and its flagship product came out of beta in March.

I’ve been using Opera 9.5 beta for a little while now and it’s not all cookies and milk. In fact I’ve had loading problems with this site with it. Firefox 3 loads faster and their are fewer bugs.

    Oh, and first!

Make sure you’ve downloaded the LATEST SNAPSHOT BETA, found at http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/

Opera also has a new skin.. Which in my opinion, .. sucks. Changed it back to the old one. The latest snapshot uses even less memory, especially when you minimize it. Blows FF3 away in my opinion.

Been using opera for years and love it, however as said 9.5 is beta and is absolutely riddled with bugs so avoid that version. I do like the new sync feature though

@3 , there are much better skins and setups available for it if you go to tools and appearence and click get more skins, expedition slim is a nice one . + you dont need to restart operra after changing the skin ;-)

    Opera R0X,

It is the best browser overall… it is not used enough and the defacto standards of MS IE do not follow official protocols. But with opera you can selectively block banners!!!! :D That rox.. and saves time on slow PC’s and slow internetconnections. LOVE IT!

Beta should be fixed so it can be the final version.

FireFox never was all that fast until the latest version, 3.0. Now it’s blazing fast.

Either Opera or FF is a great option. Anything is better then Safari/IE. :)

i’ve been using Opera for a long while now (i think ever since it went free or adless or whatnot) and I’ve been liking it. Nevertheless I’m open for new stuff, tried firefox here and there but it couldn’t please me. I will however still try out FF3 when it comes out (not beta) and then compare it to this new Opera (havent tried it out yet either) and take what works best. This new malware blocking feature sounds interesting in both. Hopefully it doesn’t add to system load.

i like both the browser ff3 for the plugins and opera for the sleekiness and the rss /icq/email/widgets and mouse gestures features plus the sweet blank page with 9 shortcuts its so fun to use
but yeah ff3 seems to be faster and with people with more ram its a gr8 browser

i use opera for surfing and ff for downloading stuff as the IDM plugin works amazingly with firefox
specially downloading embeded videos and songs

looking forward to the opera 9.5 vs ff3 fight

Using a modified hosts file protects you from everything using ANY browser.

But down part is certain legit sites won’t load unless you remove them from the hosts file, but that’s no biggie.

I’d rather have a secure browser which has no exploits and I can rely on instead of equiping it with some bullsh!t software which you can’t rely on.

I ‘ve been using Opera exclusively for 3 years, and if you know what you’re doing, the weekly beta builds are unsurpassed (if you dont mind a few bugs of course).

why is opera best i know ;) FF is realy close but…

    1. install and almost all is done, no need to find addons and stuff.
    2. gestures
    3. The best feature i know in opera is its “back to previous page”, I mean back button or gesture back, its absolutly instant! no need to load the page again or anything like that… thats what keept me on opera on start.
    4. pop up blocker
    5. email client – nothing sophisticated but for me its enough
    6. overal that left side menu with notes and stuff is awesome!
    7. start page with 9 quick starts is awesome idea and save me lot of time.
    8. Fit to wight feature. I use opera sometime on my old PC 14″ CRT 800×600 – pain in ass but with opera its less painfull.
    9. cheap on memmory
    10. dunno if other browsers got it too, but u can configure your own searches, i mean going to imdb click on search window with right click and create search then “i” as the key and then whenever I wrote in address bar “i jack black” i got instant resaults

If only we had enough sites following proper standards so that browsers could be judged based on their features and usability rather that on which sites work with them – I’m so sick of getting “your browser is not supported” messages.
In any case, I hope this doesn’t turn into a Opera Vs Firefox debate. As long as the two gain support over IE and push for better standards following (btw, Opera and Safari are the only ones that pass Acid3, hehe) then the web world will be a better place overall, especially with the anti-malware stuff.

1):) That’s funny. This can be said in many ways… For example: With FF, you don’t mess up you comp with stuff that you don’t need. You have just light, small and quick browser. If you need more, you can choose from many addons and take only what you need…..
    2) FireGestures, or Mouse Gestures, or All-in-One Gestures… :)
    3) Eh… That’s something special? BTW – Firefox has much more useful ‘Back’ button.
    4) No comment:DD Do you live in medieval times?
    5) There are much better choices (like Thundebird). see answer no1
6)For me unuseful, but you can have better panels with addons…
    7)see no6
    8) Nothing special…
    9) Try Firefox 3 and you’ll see what is cheap in memory!
    10) Hm, that seems interesting.. I go to find some addon where from Opera took it:))

    1. Just because Opera does include everything (and more) 97% of web users need, it doesn’t mean it fills computer with junk. If you use something on Opera, you just use it. It’s there. If you don’t need something, it’s out of sight.

    2. Which one to choose? Which is best? So many coises, I can’t choose!

    5. How is Thunderbird superior to Opera? What Thunderbird has what Opera doesn’t has?

Only thing Opera lacks is people who would code addons. Yes, you can get addons on Opera. In format called javascript. See http://userjs.org/ and this http://operawiki.info/UserJS

i never sad that FF dont have stuff i named, I just dont like to spend time making FF in opera ;)
(and ofc 4. was suppose to be “AD blocker” not popup blocker)

and i must say i just tryed firefox 3 RC2 and they made real improvment with speed and all, so its realy good browsing now.. i just installed that firegestures and that line it draw is cool…
It was some time i last tryed firefox vs2 i think it was so i gona hang on FF3 RC2 for some time now to see if i can turn it in opera and way beyond ^^

    RAM
btw so far opera 6 tabs –> 24MB
    FF3 RC2 one tab –> 58MB 6 tabs –>64MB
its improvement but still more ;)

Opera is great… if you have a slow PC. Otherwise time has proven again and again that overall Firefox is the best browser you can use. To help you understand what I mean, it’s like a domestic car. No one cares when a good one is made, because history has given them all a bad name. So in terms of my browser, why would I switch if my browser does everything I need it to do (and believe me it’s loaded in plugins) and it does it damn well? Just so I can be different and be in that small percentage of people not using IE and FF?

People need to learn that not all products that become mainstream are bad. Who knows what the future holds for FF but for now I’m really happy with FF, and if your happy with your Safari, good for you.

    Opera = Speed
    Firefox = Compatibility

It’s almost always been like this. (Javascript speed goes up & down depending on the Opera snapshot version). Opera has always been faster than Firefox, it’s not even close.

But as you know, Opera is ‘unstable’. It still has problems with alot of websites. That’s why you keep a secondary browser around (Firefox).

My browsing style is pretty weird, I keep around 25-50 tabs open… Whenever I see something interesting, I click. Firefox can’t handle so many tabs open, it will slow down to a crawl, it gets very sluggish.

Also, Opera has fast history navigation, meaning you can press back/forward and the page instatly loads. Built-in- don’t need a plugin unlike Firefox. Infact, alot of the stuff you might want are already built in, you just need some time to check out all the goodies.

Right now I’m using the 64bit beta version of Opera in a 64bit Debian OS. But, you know what, as far as I’m concerned Firefox and Opera are about even since FF3 fixed most of its speed issues. The only reason I use Opera is preference. I’ve been using it since the first public release, back when you had to crack the banner adds off the top of it.

It’s what I’m used to and it’s still good.

I also dislike opera bittorrent client but ather than that opera is great browser.

    To turn it off:
    1. in the url type “opera:config” (no quotes)
    2. Select BitTorrent
    3. Uncheck “Enable” box.

Or right click on torrent file and “save target as”.
