Okkervil River - The Stand Ins (Advance) (2008)

One of my favorite indie bands, Texas’ folk-tinged Okkervil River, have their new album, The Stand Ins, set for a release next month.  DV8, once again, coming through big time, brings it to us a month early.  I haven’t had a chance to listen to it, but I’ve loved their older works, and have extremely high hopes.  So check it out if you like your indie with a hard country/folk influence.

Okkervil River is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. They self-released their first album, Stars Too Small to Use, which led them to the South by Southwest music festival. After recording their first album in a garage, they signed with Jagjaguwar. Okkervil River continued by releasing two more albums, including concept album Black Sheep Boy, which landed them critical praise.

For Real off their old album is an amazing song, but a lot of their music doesn’t ever go anywhere and is boring.

this is a great band, reminiscent of “The Magnetic Fields”, “Neutral Milk Hotel”, and a bit of “Ian Moore”. A very cool album from them, chill and melodic. Give them a chance and you just might agree!

Somehow the cover looks like a fat cartoon giving the peace symbol. I’ve always said Cartman looks like a skeleton with a red shirt on and a bottle in his hand.
