Sounds are NOT working with ac3filter (newest 1.46).
There's something Really strange regarding audio-coding, this is NOT standard AC3! Everything else works as usual with sounds etc. Tested with MPClassic & CoreAVC & VLC (although VLC is _so_ slow decoding x264 it's a joke as "decoder" ;)
Using dualcore-cpu, no problems whatsoever with any other x264/ac3-titles. Seen maybe 40-50 so far without problems.

Any clues ?
Is this typical to Sinners "releases" ???
- so We can Avoid those in the future...

@46 acousticsage, you need to download the previous release. There are few people who have complained about 2.2.3.258 (latest) while converting mkv files. They used the previous release 2.2.3.256 and worked for them. You might wanna give it a try.
You can visit convertX website forum to look into the details.

let me straighten things out, about the whole HD downscaling to SD sets, I never meant using convertx to dvd to reduce quality, i meant playing the hd material as it is and running it through sd or component to a standard tv, it looks way better than a retail DVD that way, I have run side by side comparisons on a 48" standard TV and the difference is very very obvious like night and day, its like hooking up a bluray or hd dvd player to a large standard TV, u'll still get better PQ than a regular dvd even though u r not running HD output resolution, as headhurts said, colors are richer and bitrate is alot higher than retail dvds out there,
i recommend to anyone with a sizeable SD set who isnt satisfied with dvd quality and not yet ready to upgrade, u can run an s-video or component connection through a laptop and play through vlc and maintain aspect ratio, i can guarantee u'll get better PQ that way, but the size of these rips might not be worth it though

@mropinion
The main reason it "can" look better is mainly due to their being more colour information. Regular DVD is 480 lines, the colour information is only 240 lines (in PAL it's 576 and 288 respectively). A 720p encode will have 360 lines of colour information and that is the main reason why it can look better. Again, the 1080p file will have 540 lines of colour information and on a 480p set that's more than enough.

@gunslinger
The original SD DVD uses the same HD source as the HD encodes do, so the only time a DVD9 created from a HD source is going to look better is if the Original DVD9 was bitrate starved to begin with and you have a pristine/very good HD source. With modern MPEG2 encoders it's rarely the case. So in a nutshell I agree with what you are saying, however I don't think that is what many people are interpreting.

Also, many of these HD rips contain higher bitrate DD tracks which need to be re-encoded to be compatible with DVD, compressing a lossy source will result in SQ that will in all likelihood be inferior to the original SD DVD which used an uncompressed source. Whether your ears will ever notice a difference is another issue altogether. Some people claim converting DD tracks on DVDS to DTS improve SQ so clearly we have beings on this earth with super-golden-turbo-nuclear-ninja ears. (or a preference for compression artefact's)

wow ... nice squabbling guys !!!!

it seems some of you are missing the point i'll make below, and those of you that havent, your failing to explain it !!

1.4gb dvd rip (2x700mb) - re-convereted back to DVD5 format is ok, but

6gb hd file - converted to DVD9 is going to be better, and maybe close if not better than the original SD DVD

sh1t in equals sh1t out,

the better quality file you can start with the better results you will see visually, whether it's a HD file or not !!

hi rich, i downloaded the spiderman3 720p as well and used convertx to dvd to convert it into a dual layer dvd. the quality was worse than a dvd-r , so i just burnt it as a data dvd. will keep it for future when i am able to buy a blu-ray player or hd-tv. so for now, as there is no better solution, i won't download any hd movies(no point).i don't want to get any movie which is slightly better than dvd-rip after wasting huge bandwidth.

Thats intresting you say a HD source on a SD screen looks nicer, I'm not going to argue with that I've heard people say this before but not tried it myself.

what I dont understand is why? surely the comercial dvds will have been downsampled from the source in better quality then you can get with any kind of high street downsampler.

The only explantion I can think of is that HD sources have a better more modern compression method compared to mpeg2. which I suppose would account for the improved colour people talk about.

However in that case I guess it kinda depends on how compressed the comercail dvd is, I watched a genuine SD DVD of the incredibles on my HD tv the other day and was amazed at the quality, and vibrance of the colours....

.. could it be that people have been watching DVD rips so long that theyve forgotten what kind of quality a well encoded comercial SD DVD offers?

I'd like to see that dvd played side by side with a downsampled HD version on a SD set to be convinced the whole thing isnt in peoples heads.

.. could it be that people have been watching DVD rips so long that theyve forgotten what kind of quality a well encoded comercial SD DVD offers?

I’d like to see that dvd played side by side with a downsampled HD version on a SD set to be convinced the whole thing isnt in peoples heads.

ahh you didnt mention before you were comparing it to a dvd RIP, in which case obviously a 6gb encode compressed to dvd will look better than a 700mb or even 1.4gb dvd rip. Thats kinda obvious dude.

im not trying to argue but i am right. I have just downloaded spiderman 3 720p at 6g. I used convertxtodvd to split into 5 segments( which also makes the file 4.3g cos extra space not always needed!!!) I kept the original file so i could make sure that i wasent loosin any quality and im tellin u if u use this sofware you DONT. So then i burn to dvd..... and play on my tv using a ps2. I realise that the image is NOT HD but i am certain that the image is far better than ANY dvdrip. So basically guys its up 2 u but id rather use a hd file and have far better quality........you?

@rich + theo
I'll explain it nice and easy so nobody has to argue this one anymore. Theo is correct in that a HD downscaled to SD looks better than SD on an SD set. However this only holds true if the playback source is HD. This goes out the window the moment one compresses to SD resolution and uses that to play back the file. It loses all the advantages and will look worse than the SD source because the studios are using a higher bitrate source to master the DVD sold to retail. A compressed HD file of a compressed HD source further compressed down to DVD will have compromised image quality. So Mr. Rich, you are getting excited over absolutely nothing and it's all in your head that you are getting better quality. So in terms of quality (assuming people know what they are doing):

Master Source > 1080p HDDVD/BD > 720p Re-encode > Retail DVD > DVD made from 720p Re-encode
