Obama’s ads in Burnout video game

Video gamers who have recently played the racing game Burnout Paradise may find it offers more than a high-speed driving simulation: advertisements for Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, above, have begun appearing in the game. Players of Burnout Paradise who are connected to the Internet are also connected to an in-game system that allows real-life sponsors to place advertisements on billboards and other surfaces in its digital world. Jeff Brown, vice president of communications at Electronic Arts, which publishes Burnout Paradise, said Mr. Obama’s campaign had purchased ads to run in the Xbox 360 version of the game, which he said is most popular among male players ages 16 to 30.

The EA representative said that the ads would appear in only 10 different states, most of them contested battleground states. Paradise City residents in Ohio, Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, and Wisconsin are being targeted by the campaign. In the 2004 presidential election, all of those states except Wisconsin went to Republican incumbent George W. Bush. Mr. Brown said Senator John McCain’s campaign had not purchased in-game advertisements, but added, “There’s still three weeks before the election.”

this is off- topic, but is it just my pc or is everyone seeing these web pages that are about 5 times wider than they are supposed to be?There are no paragraphs, descriptions are one or two lines going off screen, have to scroll left to read all of it.Please telll me I am not the only one.Plus anyone else think it sucks that people are now selling ad space in video games,i know it has always been done, but not in real-time.Don’t get me wrong it can be a cool thing too, just depends on what they have ads for.

I bet ya that when he gets to get the presidency he will be showing his crip on mtv. This all while apologizing for his lack of interest in what matters and give you some lies about how he will invent a car that flies while his brother is still fighting in the Vietnam war.

Obama was also a rape, racism, murder victim and a veteran of the ww2.

Yknow… im on the fence. McCain is incompetent but i just dont trust Obama. He has so many allegiances with some far out racist nut-cases.. very pro-black anti white people. Part of the group he was on wants to secede from America and form a purely black state within the country that has its own laws. Also he was a lawyer for Acorn, he sued a bank that wouldnt loan to people that didnt meet their requirements (which in Chicago means a higher black perecentage of blacks not approved for loans) Barack saw this as racist and sued the bank. The bank was forced to lower lending terms. We all know what happened next. Most of these people couldnt afford the payments (LIKE THE BANK SAID) and it ended up costing the bank big.

The guy constantly changes to what suits him best. He promised to stick to accept state money in his election which comes with it a limit on the money you can spend and makes sure your campaign is run clean. He backed out of this promise made with McCain when he realized he was getting a lot more donations.

Now hes advertising in games. No problem with that, but the message is Vote Early! Which means use an ABSENTEE ballot. Absentee ballots were created for people that absolutely could not vote on voting day, they werent made to make it easier to vote for everyone who didnt want to take the time to vote on election day, they were originally created just for Soldiers then emergency situations.

I know Barack is going to win… and honestly if these racist ties turn out to be nothing and he does care about all of America then he will make a great president but i just believe his allegiances arent with all of America, only the minority. And McCain is just incompetent and will keep us in the past and alienate the rest of the world.

AS IM TYPING THIS: Cnn (robin meade) is reporting on advertising in games. Can you imagine is McCain advertised?

@7: It’s not like it’s impeding you in any way. The game doesn’t stop to make you watch campaign ads, or even make you look at the existing ones. Hell, in a game that moves as fast as Burnout, I doubt I’d even notice said billboards.

Why do concerns make him a “nazi”? I think I’ll vote for the man trusting that he’s a better man than many of those he hangs with. But I still think there is legitimate room for worry without being a “nazi”. There are plenty of real hate groups around without making anyone who questions the man satan. My biggest concern at the moment is world image, which I normally couldn’t care less about, but Mccain is just too old and angry for the times. I would have voted for him 20 yrs ago maybe.

As to the ads…my next door neighbor has one on her lawn also. Doesn’t bug me but I thought you might want to report on it.

damn! what’s wrong in that kind of ad’s? i think it is a step forward in gaming industry!!
    a) it makes it more realistic
    b) if you ever read about it – some of the games in the future might be free – with some ad’s in them! look how many torrents are now – would you prefer to have original game for free (with some ad’s in it) or a pirated version? or pay for it 50$ – without ad’s?
    c) what is Your problem with ad’s anyway?

if i pay for a game once and they make profit from the game sales once then why should i make them money a second or a third time.
if i buy something then the deal is done i own it, are we saying that once we buy something we should be victims of whatever money making marketing ideas the company has after.
its not like we see a return as the customer on lower prices on games now is it.
hell sell me a game for half price then make money of adds fine but i see no upside in this for the customer only for the company’s that have made money off me once already.

Yeah Deaf Audiophile, thanks for bringing that up. I forgot about that. Now maybe i am racist or bias but that doesnt bother me personally as much, it seems to me those guys are just a few crazies living in Alaska. Theyre far from America and the goings on down here they see us as just taking from them. Its stupid and backward but it seems small to me. Where as a large portion of the black population (at least in Chicago) hold these extremely racist thoughts.

I cant believe Duffle Bag Boy would call me a racist Nazi, why am i racist for wondering this? I am really trying to eliminate any bias thoughts i have as i go through this but i just cant ignore certain things as i go along.
It seems to me the news, media, politicians, and everyday people are AFRAID to ask certain questions or say things because theyre worried about being labeled a racist. Its ridiculous and once this election is over their are going to be some strange repercussion as we go along. Look at this:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7177115632220636445

its a video of Louis Farrakhan on the Phil Donahue show. Phil is a weird guy but back then white people were not afraid to ask what was on their mind. An indian immigrant even stood up and said that America is one of the greatest countries and Louis has no idea what hes talking about and is just perpetuating racism. Now it seems a lot of people are afraid to talk the way they feel.

i really wish their never was slavery, never was racism or holding people back or using them against their will.

i dunno, people like putting the decals on their cars of companies like shell and some tuning houses so they enjoy the adverts. face it, the logo design of major companies (motorsports related) has to be better than any phoney companies the game developers can come up with.

i gather there are only obama adverts in this game because the dev sells ad space to rge highest bidder, but the dev is still political in allowing either to be respresented in their game and i think it would be nice if they remained a bit more impartial. politics spilling into computer games is a turn for the worse

Obama is not an “extremist” “black-power” guy. It’s the republican smear machine at work, folks. We’ve seen these during the TWO Bush campaigns. Haven’t we learned to be wary of this stuff?

Listen, there are a lot of Obama articles around the web. Most smears come from right-wing blogs/conservative “think tanks”. National Review, American Enterprise Inst., etc are conservative. Likewise there are liberal pieces. Consult wikipedia to check the allegiance of the author & his/her institute before taking what they’ve written to heart. Rumors tend to snowball and exaggerated: e.g. there is a very recent article in the NYT (”The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama”) about the man (Andy Martin) who started the rumor that Obama is a muslim. Martin’s an anti-Semite who was featured Sunday on Fox in a special connecting Obama to Ayers; there Martin was considered an “expert.” So beware. Make sure your info is correct.

With that said, Obama has written a sort of memoir (”Dreams from My Father”) while he was still a grad student. This was before he even considered politics and it gives you an idea of his character. His next book “Audacity of Hope” was written when he was a senator; it is a rough outline of his political philosophy. It was the positive reception to the book by people that made him consider a run for the presidency.

Check my facts @ wikipedia. It contains links to reputable newspapers (NYT, Chicago Tribune, etc) — some written in the 90s (before he was “big”, so they weren’t “puff pieces”). One says (NYT) that he was voted editor of the Harvard Law Review (before he wrote his 1st book) because he was good at listening to all people, regardless of position, trying to extract the good out of several arguments and forming a consensus that is congenial to all. When he was a professor @ the Univ of Chicago (from a UC talk), a former student says no topic was too “obvious” for him; you can’t get away with an issue without him hearing both sides of the argument first. There are many articles like this, scattered throughout the years in Salon, Atlantic Monthly, New Yorker, you name it. Nothing is malevolent about Obama.

After you read enough of this stuff, you can understand Obama’s tolerance to “extremists” (those that don’t share his views a bit) and trust that he is not at all taken to easy persuasion. Sorry for the length, just had to blurt it out because the characterization of the GOP is grossly malicious. I really doubted him at first, but do your research folks. Be very skeptical– but not too paranoid.

I hasten to add, about this race politics. Remember that Obama was raised by a white family (his mother & her parents– Obama’s grandparents)– his father left him when he was 2 iirc. He knows how white people live; he grew up white forgodssakes. On the other hand, there’s his color, which he learned about in his work around black communities.

Well played. I’d vote for him just for doing that. He’s targeting young voters, and it’s working as more young adults are turning out in bigger numbers than have been seen before.

I think it was CNN where some college chick said the only reason she is voting for Obama is because McCain is too old. He doesn’t understand our (’Google’ generation … generation ‘M’) world. He doesn’t have a personal email address and can’t use google.

Good on Obama and his campaign to use adds in games. I’m pretty surprised it hasn’t been done more in the past. It quite ingenious if you think about it … game developers don’t need fake ads and can make money off it.

    +1 Obama, +1.

    October 15th, 2008 | 19:39

@Weezy: It’s one thing to comment on the things you see on television, and another to understand what’s going on. TV only gives Whites a very small picture of the Black community. The picture media executives want you to see. “If it bleeds, it leads” in the ratings. Black support groups are put in place to bring to light unjust practices, and they are open to all races. Funny thing though, Whites rarely show up. Many Blacks won’t help cops, not because they want to help the criminal, but because the relationship between police and Blacks has been historically negative, and they don’t trust the police. In addition, they are afraid of retaliations from the criminals because they know the police can take up to an hour to respond to a call. In that time, their whole family can be hurt or killed, and they would be the story you see on your evening news. Obama’s credentials and education surpass many in public office right now. If he were White, it would be a no brainer. However, many Whites will claim they don’t trust him because they’ve been conditioned not to trust Blacks by the media.

Mike how about you stop reading emails that get forwarded to you and actually do some research on your own?

If you knew Sen Obama’s record you would know that he received a Bachelors Degree at Columbia University, a law degree from Havard and was a CONSTITUTIONAL LAW professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago; all prestigious universities of the highest regard. This man is extremely intelligent, pragmatic, well educated, well mannered, and has a proven record of fighting for the hard working people of the middle class.

Here in Illinois they call him “no drama Obama” because there has never been an accusation or hint of scandal around him, they can only sling mud on people that he somehow knows so therefore is responsible for…. facts are facts this guy has a squeaky clean ethical and moral record, in a state that is not well known for that.

I live in Illinois, Sen Obama was a state Senator here for 8 years when the people of Illinois voted to send him to the US Senate 4 years ago….. he has not let working families down check his voting record, he has full union support here in Illinois. McCain on the other hand, is your standard Regan Republican; lower taxes for the rich and decrease regulation and it will increase jobs, its called Reganomics and it doesnt work, ask Regan, Bush I, and Bush II. Bill Clinton already exposed the flawed Republican economic philosophy for what it really is.

Anyway, vote for Obama or dont complain when you are fighting for Iranian independence, while your family is back in the states suffering through a depression.

See, O-bomination is an example of a guy that Obama is surely not. The irony of this is that in trying to portray Obama as an extremist, O-bomination is acting like an extremist (to the far-right) himself. He says “How stupid can you get?” because “Obama voted for the bailout!”. Well DUH, what would that make GOP in the first place? It was Bush who pushed this to be passed, and *EXCESSIVE* deregulation that the GOP & McCain heralds as the answer to everything that caused this in the first place? Why do you think Republicans in Congress hated, detested this bill? It’s in the EXTREME opposite of their ideology: it’s the Satan to their Christ: BIG, MASSIVE govt intervention. But this is what they caused in the first place. How stupid is THAT?

I can’t understand people shouting SOCIALIST SOCIALIST when it was BUSH & his admin who actually PUSHED us into that position. And dont even tell me that Democrats controlled Congress the last 2 yrs. Bills get vetoed by the president in the end.

Remember that although the lack of regulation (of derivatives & risks) is not the beginning of this crisis per se (people are still debating over the exact beginning of the crisis and it may be difficult to spot, and may not be relevant anyway since it is an accumulation of unfortunate events), it *was* the cause of the very rapid acceleration into collapse — because regulation would have greatly cushioned the burgeoning fiscal problem years ago. Think of it as a ball on a hilltop. Regulation = slope/steepness of the hill. A slight shove on a very steep hill (=deregulation) will make it go incredibly faster than a flatter one. In fact it’s a snowballing effect.

Of course the answer is not just regulation, but common-sense regulation. Obama *is* pragmatic and he of course understands this.

“See, O-bomination is an example of a guy that Obama is surely not. The irony of this is that in trying to portray Obama as an extremist, O-bomination is acting like an extremist (to the far-right) himself.”

Extremism in the name of liberty is no vice.

“He says “How stupid can you get?” because “Obama voted for the bailout!”. Well DUH, what would that make GOP in the first place? It was Bush who pushed this to be passed, and *EXCESSIVE* deregulation that the GOP & McCain heralds as the answer to everything that caused this in the first place?”

You’re one of the people that listens to soundbites and watches Jon Stewart and suddenly thinks he knows everything without studying the subject. Where is this massive “deregulation” I keep hearing about? Bush has expanded Government spending to it’s largest it has ever been.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight was in charge of regulating Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation) and it failed under bureaucracy.

Through the Community Reinvestment Act, banks had to take on risky mortgages to people who could not afford it.

“Why do you think Republicans in Congress hated, detested this bill? It’s in the EXTREME opposite of their ideology: it’s the Satan to their Christ: BIG, MASSIVE govt intervention. But this is what they caused in the first place. How stupid is THAT?”

Not as stupid as you, apparently. Ron Paul is the only Republican in Congress that is against government intervention into the free market. For all the others you could call them Democrats and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. McCain? Voted for the bailout.

    1. “Extremism in the name of liberty is no vice.”

Ah, so, you agree Al-qaeda and other Islamic fundamentalist militants? After all, they are fighting for freedom over perceived Western hegemony? Your attempt at an adage devolves into platitude/witticism. Try again?

    2. “You’re one of the people that listens to soundbites and watches Jon Stewart and suddenly thinks he knows everything without studying the subject.”

Oh, so we’re making assumptions now? As long as we’re doing that, I assume you know the subject thoroughly, Mr. “O-bomination”? This is timely because: (1) FN & FM are not even considered by many financial experts to be significant contributors to the subprime mortgage crisis because they invested late in the market (e.g. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/check-point-the-grand-finale/). (2) The Community Reinvestment Act argument has never gained any real support apart from the right. At the tedium of outlining to yet *another* grating poster the counter-arguments, I’ll give you (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/15/opinion/15wed2.html) which summarizes them succinctly. (3) This is really getting boring: from #47, I mentioned a Wash Post article which goes deep into the role of Republicans to push deregulation, unhealthily & even surreptitiously: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/14/AR2008101403343.html. It is true that Bush is “the biggest regulator since the Nixon-Ford years” (surprise, surprise, GOP) — but “mostly reflects the many new homeland-security regulations” since 9/11 (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/14/business/economy/14regulate.html).

    3. “Not as stupid as you, apparently.”

Hmm, resorting to ad hominems. Very expected, but still how unoriginal & boring. No wittier retorts, at least?

    4. “Ron Paul is the only Republican in Congress that is against government intervention into the free market.”

Oh… I thought you WERE pro-McCain, seeing as you’re anti-Obama. Realizing now that you’re for Ron Paul (who lives in La-La-Land, btw) trying to strike up a convo w/ you won’t probably matter, because your candidate will never win anyway.

    Goshdarnit. Thanks for nothing.

For the record, I never made grotesque characterizations about you. I said the fact that it was a Republican admin that pushed for a bailout WAS stupid, not you. I said you “acted like an extremist”, but you’re probably not– perhaps just misguided, thoroughly.

I have to agree with AB,i honestly thought Obamination was being sarcastic at first.

Baracks going to win, but i say lets give him a landslide. Let him know their is a lot of support for him. Give him 4 years and see how it goes. If he really is as bad as some people say he’ll be impeached but if his decisions work then we could really restore our standing in the world… and hopefully our economy.

Wow. You think terrorism is freedom? No wonder you support a big statist like Obama. Apparently more tyranny equates to freedom in your cognitive dissonance reality.

Read the articles you post you illiterate fool. The first explicitly says what I was saying, that the banks were forced to take upon risky loans for poor people. As for the other one, the Government created all of those malinvestments without regulating themselves.

Go back to your online fantasy communist Utopia fighting off the evil GOP.

“i honestly thought Obamination was being sarcastic at first. ”
