Foobar all the way. Infinitely customizable (appearance, features, dsps) and best sound quality.

i have just looked at foobar and i am thinking fuck that. i saw some pretty impressive configurations but i havent seen any real guides on how to do it yourself. i just want a music player i can use right away, not have to spend hours learning how to configure properly.

  14. Yeah, right!
    April 26th, 2007 | 00:55

Best sound quality ;D Those kind of comments make me always laugh. Did you know, that with blinded comparative tests (the subject doesn’t know what source is playing, but is able to do comparisons between different samples), even the “Golden Eared” hifi gurus didn’t mostly hear any difference between a straight wav and 160kbs VBR MP3 :p And that was with their own choice of music, that they themselves picked for the test… And that was with expensive headphones and all. Most folks listen with 10 dollar/euro costing excuse for headphones/speakers, between all the crackle and pop, they get from their equipment, it would be a miracle if they would spot the difference between different players, which mostly use very similar “sound engines” underneath… Well, just my opinion ;)

Unless Trendmicro is mistaken, there’s a virus in the keymaker (type TROJ_Generic).

Think I’ll stick to the nearly as good Winamp basic for free (sans virus!)

  16. April 26th, 2007 | 01:03

    Winamp is great!

    April 26th, 2007 | 01:07

I’ve gotta say.. JetAudio has enough controllable sound enhancements to get my #1 vote for sound quality. Winamp w/ DFX is pretty good too.

  18. April 26th, 2007 | 01:09

    Yer winamp is the way.
I’ll look into foobar since so many so arrogantly say it’s good. I guess they can’t express an opinion calmly. They are probably used to be wrong.
Anyway Winamp is light and that’s what I like about it.
I can’t take Itunes as it is so heavy. I used to love it when on my powerbook though. Also I guess Ipod force many…
So yea I’ll look into foobar :P

obviously nobody knows what they are talking about here because people who know their stuff know that VLC is the best.

I stopped using these newer Winamp versions, they chew up too much system resources. Instead I use Winamp 2.666, Satan’s media player :D It’s also very light on the compy ^^

  22. April 26th, 2007 | 01:21

    Thx Jbricks for dfx tip.
I didn’t know about it. Trying it now with some Amy Winehouse :D

    ok, my two cents.
Foobar is horrible, Itunes is horrible (i have an ipod, but its still one of the wrost programs ever, especially when it converts over 5000 of your mp3s to itunes then leaves doubles.)
and VLC is ONLY!! good for videos, why the hell would you use that for music? lol

    GOOOO WINAMP

  24. April 26th, 2007 | 01:31

VLC to play mp3 files isn’t particularly convenient… rofl.

  25. April 26th, 2007 | 01:33

I agree with you about that Neo, Itunes is a pain to adjust for someone that cares about where to store YOURSELF the files.
That said, I remember the playlist management on Itunes was quite ok.

I was starting to think that I was the only one who finds iTunes to be obtuse. Everything I want it makes 100X more complicated than it needs to. It can turn what should be a drag and drop procedure into an odd sized proprietary multi-step process of anger inducing confusion. But the kids tell me it’s cool.

The new Windows Media Player is very neat. Autodownload of album covers = ownage. Winamp is still better though for creating your own custom playlists.

Still using Winamp 2.95 for music and see no reason for newer versions. Ive tried the 5 series couple of times and always switched back to 2.95.
VLC is the way to go for videos and all unknown media types though.

another 2 cents from me: winamp is easy on resources (i know, most people will say it’s not such a great thing, but that all depends on how many preograms u run in the backround! try some graphic/video design soft and u’ll see what i mean, pretty much no matter you ram&cpu power), gives really good output (indeed, most of us will never really be able to distinguish tween let;s say 256 or 320 and lossless:)), format friendly and let’s face it, we might be bored with it, but it’s here for ages, so, in, the end, i guess it’s like the Brits do with the monrachy: we’ll defend it! :) ) And b4 people jump at my throats, i’m not dissin’ the UK, just arguing in favor of Winamp!
    More llamas for me!:)

I use decent Bose 7.1 speakers, 7.1 creative sound card, and an old version of winamp. If it isn’t broken.. don’t fix it. I like the very small footprint and low overheard. The sound file, drivers, card, and speakers determine sound quality *shrug* no need for newer versions of the player unless you play to do newer things with it (skins, video, etc).

All you WA 2.x people, just get the latest lite version, its like the 2.x versions, just with security updates

    April 26th, 2007 | 06:01

If it aint broken, DONT Fix it!

  34. April 26th, 2007 | 06:20

I like foobar 2000 but it doesnt have a online music station window.. so you can surf internet music stations. If they added support for that it would be better.

Anyone tried Media Monkey? I prefer it to all the others, (Never really got on with Winamp) & i dont have to use crappy itunes for the ipod no more.
Downloaded an add-on script to download all the missing album covers too. Look for the 2.5.5 version that fixed ipod bugs.

CL-Amp FTW !! lol. And APlayer. Can anyone rip out the chiptune from the crack and post it ? ARN’s crack tunes are usually made by an artist called LHS.

No, Amarok seems to be a really good player for KDE.

  37. J-Roc
    April 26th, 2007 | 07:17

Amarok really is the best i have ever used. I just wish they would make a windows version.

    Quintessential player. works well

  40. April 26th, 2007 | 09:15

Martin, you really should close these threads when they begin to show zero intelligence.

This is for the rest of you dumb fucks:
Who cares what player you like, use or want. This software was posted here for the ppl who like this particular player.
All this stupid debating clogs all the good intel that some ppl might have on the posted software. Maybe someday the player you use might be posted here, would it be nice if I for instance would just flood the thread with BS, when you trying to search for some good commentary on it?

Message ends here.. thank god :p

it doesnt really matter if you are playing mp3 128k or wahtever on whatever program because if it doesnt come from the CD then why are we talking about quality??

  42. April 26th, 2007 | 10:33

    i also use winamp!

    April 26th, 2007 | 11:31

    @Yeah, right!,

Fair enough. But to my defense I didn’t say “noticeably better” audio quality :) . Even if most humans can’t hear the difference, it’s still there (if you use kernel streaming at least).

Do you have a link to the tests you mention? I’m not an audiophile myself but this stuff interests me.

On a sidenote, anyone that wants cheap, good audio quality from their computer should by a X-Fi XtremeMusic and mod it according to this guide: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=229350

It’s a night/day difference after the mod (if you have decent gear at least).

I use the Real Player!! It’s the best by far.

Lol… just kidding, thought I’d make you laugh.

The old winamps were good, I use one sometimes… I use I-tunes to fill my I pod but that’s it….I use Windows Media Player once in awhile… but my favorite would be “Media Monkey” – it has tons of options/features, without being too confusing… and it doesn’t take 3 years to launch it.

Since the old days I’m still with Winamp, yes, I don’t like the modern skin, I use the classic one without the plugins… it’s fine just like the old 2.666 version :)

    April 28th, 2007 | 12:31

MediaMonkey is imo way better then Winamp and Foobar. It’s great for big music collections :)

Yeah well I’v played music and recorded since 1972! So I would say I know alittle something about sound. I’v used everthing out there at one time or another and always come back to Winamp for Music not Movies! It’s just plain simple to use.

P.S. It also doesn’t take control of your system ala Real Player and some others.

I downloaded 4 times winamp the new version from trendmicro and it does have a virus so be very very cautious if you decide to download it. i loved it but when i redid my computer i lost the install so download it and bam trojans up the butt. only trouble with windows media it does not always play songs form loaded cds. where winamp did. i may try itunes see if i like it.
