What about the possibility of fear induced catastrophe? If you believe it, it'll happen kind of thing. Or perhaps a change in the Earth caused by a predicted timescale (ie every 5000 years or so the earth's axis shifts, is 2012 the next shift and thus a change in the earth?)

If Nostradamus was so precisely forseeing things, why did he get killed? There is no asteroid big enough to destroy the earth on scan, but there can be small ones that always sneak up. The earth 'can't' be in the 'center' of the universe and allign with other planets in some strange mysterious way that destroys it. Aliens are speculation(too much hollywood), and the earth axis wobble,plate shifts etc are all stupidly over exaggerated and are effectively life changing, as a sunny day in summer. Forget 2012, you could be run over tomorrow. 2012 is irrelevant, just like the year 2000
To me it's not a negative thing to know that there will be great changes. It's not negative. It's evolution. When you look at it as evolution, it's time. Nothing stays the same.

I thought that it was the earth would be in the very center of our galaxy… Not the universe… The universe is too vast for anyone here to actually figure out just where the end of it is… But if it is in the center of even outr galaxy, who knows? Maybe it will make a slight ahift out of its circular patten across the sun. That's what's mostly being speculated right now, and as for me, I don't know if something will happen. One thing's for sure though, there will be a LOT of induced panic, people will sell their prized possessions and houses and wait for the end of the world (it'll be the 1960's all over again with people waiting for God to come take them away :S ), and well if the world does shift a change, it could mean another possible Ice Age (I mean, if the world's even 1% further away from the sun, we'd freeze to death; 1% closer and we'd be fried). The Mayan race was far more intellectual (and in some ways they could build structures we stil can't perfect properly, same as the Egyptians), and their calendar just happens to end around December 2012… Could just mean they got tired of writing on the darn thing, or were wiped out by newcomers, or maybe the world does end in 2012… Nuclear war is going to come sooner or later, no matter how badly we choose not to believe it

not doomsday at all, although the Maya expressed great significance to the day, it was just because it was the end of a "cycle" (periods of 144,000 days). Hell the quatrains of Nostradamus, in no way mentions "the end of the world" at all… anywhere in there. In fact the so called "anti christ" is defeated and peace is restored.

Nostradamus predicts something will happen in(or around) 2012, Edgar Cayce, the mayan calender ends on 2012, the hopi indians and many others through a couple century span.
There are also many other things pointing to 'somthing' that will happen in 2012. Why does everyone think the world will end in 2012? You people are the ignorant ones. It will NOT end. The current cycle our planet is in will end AROUND 2012 and another begins. Current human psyche(our current way of thinking)will end and another will begin. Just like it did when the world entered into world wars I & II and when world war II finally ended when america used nuclear weapons and the entire world changed its thinking and entered into an era of peace. I do know every 12 years, the sun gives off a burst of energy whatever you call it, it suppose to kill off all the electric made products or power that we use. Last 12 years was a weak one(melted a few wires or such they said), this 2012 suppose to be a uber strong one so I don't know, or care.

People are naturally defensive of that which they don't understand. It's a great psychological trait that you should be proud of.

You people must realize that humans (all over the world) have the technology to manipulate the weather on the global scale by shooting radio waves into the atmosphere, and changing the planet's jet streams. The USA uses this technology to block hurricanes from coming inland in the USA. This is nothing new, remember the major droughts in California during the 80s, those event directly coincided with the Soviet radio transmissions detected by the rest of the world. When the Soviets stopped the radio wave transmission the droughts ended. Very well documented case.
