The following is a chat conversation I had with a technical support rep at Symantec (a very nice guy, who really helped me out) regarding information I required to create a ghost System Recovery Disk from the ISO file Symantec sent me when I purchased a downloadable version of Ghost 14.0. I found the documentation manual for Ghost to lack a lot of basic content. I had difficulty using Nero Burning ROM and wasted 3 CD's before I gave up and contacted Symantec technical support.

It's pretty easy making an SRD, backing up using Ghost and restoring, if only the manual could be written in more understandable way....

The following should help anyone understand the basics and allow them to use Symantec Ghost 14.0. The sad part of this is there are a lot of unanswered links on Google and Yahoo of other customers who purchased Ghost 14.0, experiencing the same problems. I am an IT Professional and I was struggling with this, imagine your average joe out there.

Hey Symantec, wake up, please write a more user friendly manual for Ghost that anyone can understand and stop letting your engineers write these manuals. Know why, they can't write.....

Issue: Creating Ghost 14.0 System Recovery Disk from the downloaded ISO file Symantec provided me. End Session Mr. Tim Erskine has entered room.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:44:42 EST 2008)>ok, it's burning. So tell me the rest of what I have to do.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:45:10 EST 2008)>I have my son's complete computer image saved to a USB drive. The image is about 7Gigs in size.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:45:56 EST 2008)>There were two files saves to the image. Is this image also referred to as reference point or something name like that?

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:46:16 EST 2008)>You can not restore a different computer's backup image on another computer with host 14 .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:46:31 EST 2008)>You can restore to the same computer which backup was taken .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:47:19 EST 2008)>I'm not doing that. I backed up my son's computer on a USB drive. His computer needs to be completely redone due to a virus. What do I do

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:47:58 EST 2008)>You need to boot the computer from this Recovery Disc .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:48:09 EST 2008)>ok and then

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:48:11 EST 2008)>This disc will start the computer in a Recovery Environment .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:48:31 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:48:39 EST 2008)>When you click on that , it will ask for the backup file .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:48:49 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:48:45 EST 2008)>Select the file from the USB drive .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:48:57 EST 2008)>there are two files on the USB drive

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:48:56 EST 2008)>Next it will ask you the target disk where you want to restore the backup .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:49:04 EST 2008)>one smal and one large

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:49:06 EST 2008)>Select the disk and the restore operation will start .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:49:59 EST 2008)>These two files are located in a folder. I direct the recovery environment to this folder and that's all, it will select the appropriate file of the two?

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:50:01 EST 2008)>Please let me know the complete names of the two files .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:50:12 EST 2008)>just a sec

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:50:17 EST 2008)>Sure .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:51:34 EST 2008)>Jonanico.sv2i and Jonanico_C_Drive001.v2i

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:52:18 EST 2008)>You need to select the file " Jonanico_C_Drive001.v2i" to restore .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:52:48 EST 2008)>ok. What is the other file for

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:53:41 EST 2008)>That is the configuration settings file .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:53:46 EST 2008)>Do not delete that file .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:53:56 EST 2008)>ok

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:54:12 EST 2008)>Can you give me a crash quicky course on Ghost

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:54:06 EST 2008)>That file is required to recognize the correct backup file in the Recovery environment .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:54:22 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:54:55 EST 2008)>You can download the product manual for the program from the following web link : www.norton.com/productmanual

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:54:58 EST 2008)>There are two applications in the Ghost software. Ghost for doing a backup and full recovery or the other app to restore only files and folders

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:55:16 EST 2008)>I got it and it is not easy reading.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:55:55 EST 2008)>I think Sysmantec should use more care when writing such a document that they are able to give it to a dumb blonde and have them understand it.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:56:27 EST 2008)>Not comparing myself to that, but there is a lot of crap missing from that document unless you don't have a life and have the time to go through it religiously

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:57:21 EST 2008)>There should be an easier manual. It's not that difficult but I know working in the IT field that engineers are the poorest writers

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:58:08 EST 2008)>Am I correct that Ghost is basically two packages

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:58:24 EST 2008)>You can send your feedback to Symantec regarding the manual .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:58:38 EST 2008)>Could you do that for me please.

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:58:34 EST 2008)>It has two backup systems .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:58:40 EST 2008)>One for a complete drive backup .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:58:47 EST 2008)>And the other for selected files and folders backup .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:59:33 EST 2008)>You have recovery point browser being the second application

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:00:04 EST 2008)>recover point browser is for the selected files and folders?

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:00:13 EST 2008)>Recovery point browser is an option to browse a backup file and restore files from that backup .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:00:29 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:00:25 EST 2008)>It is not for selected files and folders.

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:00:42 EST 2008)>YOu can browse a complete drive backup and view the files are restore them .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:01:19 EST 2008)>so with that on SRD I can do restores to all my computers backups

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:01:31 EST 2008)>There is no need to make up more SRD's

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:02:31 EST 2008)>If you do not see the USB drive in the Recovery Environment , you may need to create a Custom SRD using the Ghost program .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:03:19 EST 2008)>and does that SRD contain a catalog of the complete backup, maybe involving several CD burns

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:03:56 EST 2008)>SRD does not contain any catalog of backup .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:04:17 EST 2008)>When you boot from the SRD, in the Recivery mode , it will ask you to select the correct backup file that you want to restore .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:04:34 EST 2008)>ok

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:04:45 EST 2008)>so if I can't see the USB drive then what

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:05:18 EST 2008)>You need to create a Custom SRD from the Norton Ghost program .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:05:31 EST 2008)>ok and what does that entail

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:05:29 EST 2008)>In Ghost , there is an option to create a Custom Recovery Disc .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:05:42 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:06:19 EST 2008)>That will add the missing drivers and the files from the original Recovery CD to a temporary location , and then will ask you to insert a new blank CD , the program will write those files to the new CD .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:06:28 EST 2008)>And that will be your Custom SRD .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:07:38 EST 2008)>what do I do with the custom SRD

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:08:29 EST 2008)>You will boot from the Custom SRD and perform the restore operation .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:09:29 EST 2008)>Is there anything else that I can help you with?

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:09:40 EST 2008)>and if I dont see the usb drive what do I restore from

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:10:21 EST 2008)>With the Custom SRD , you will see the USB drive because it will contain the drivers .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:10:36 EST 2008)>YOu may not see the USB drive with the original SRD .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:12:40 EST 2008)>I see. Ok thats all. What you told me could be written into a very easy manual and save a lot of people the trouble of doing this very simple procedure. I see a lot of links on Google and Yahoo people p0osting for help and no answers back. I think that is very poor of Symantec to put people in that position. I'm and IT guy and do it for a living and I have to go to you for help. I'm no wizard on a computer but I still shouldn't have to do that.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:13:16 EST 2008)>I am hoping you can forward my comments to someone with some authority within Symantec. Can you do that

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:13:54 EST 2008)>You can post your comment yourself . I will provide you a link .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:14:04 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:43:46 EST 2008)>Yes .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:44:42 EST 2008)>ok, it’s burning. So tell me the rest of what I have to do.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:45:10 EST 2008)>I have my son’s complete computer image saved to a USB drive. The image is about 7Gigs in size.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:45:56 EST 2008)>There were two files saves to the image. Is this image also referred to as reference point or something name like that?

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:46:16 EST 2008)>You can not restore a different computer’s backup image on another computer with host 14 .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:46:31 EST 2008)>You can restore to the same computer which backup was taken .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:47:19 EST 2008)>I’m not doing that. I backed up my son’s computer on a USB drive.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:48:23 EST 2008)>ok

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:48:22 EST 2008)>There you will get an option ” Recover My Computer ” .

I direct the recovery environment to this folder and that’s all, it will select the appropriate file of the two?

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:50:01 EST 2008)>Please let me know the complete names of the two files .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:50:12 EST 2008)>just a sec

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:50:17 EST 2008)>Sure .

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:51:34 EST 2008)>Jonanico.sv2i and Jonanico_C_Drive001.v2i

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:52:18 EST 2008)>You need to select the file ” Jonanico_C_Drive001.v2i” to restore .

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 19:54:55 EST 2008)>You can download the product manual for the program from the following web link : http://www.norton.com/productmanual

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:56:27 EST 2008)>Not comparing myself to that, but there is a lot of crap missing from that document unless you don’t have a life and have the time to go through it religiously

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 22:57:21 EST 2008)>There should be an easier manual. It’s not that difficult but I know working in the IT field that engineers are the poorest writers

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:01:31 EST 2008)>There is no need to make up more SRD’s

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:04:45 EST 2008)>so if I can’t see the USB drive then what

I’m and IT guy and do it for a living and I have to go to you for help. I’m no wizard on a computer but I still shouldn’t have to do that.

Samujjwal(Sat Dec 6 20:14:19 EST 2008)>If you wish to provide additional comments regarding any Symantec product or service enhancement, you may post your message at the following URL:

https://secure1.symantec.com/discuss/support/feedback2.nsf/product+feedback

Our feedback database is reviewed by management directly, and provides a forum for our customers to send feedback regarding enhancements to any Symantec product or service.

Mr. Tim Erskine(Sat Dec 6 23:14:41 EST 2008)>Thanks very much for your great help. Tim

Service Pack 2 Available Guys?

Fixes heaps of the bugs in v14.

The reason why this takes 20 mins to load is that it has to load 100x more drivers than when Ghost was available via a floppy bootdisk.

Anyone recommend the best system for realtime imaging? i.e. total disaster recovery of boot volume (C:)?

Thanks!
Emma. (:

And when you consider that I used to boot it from a floppy disc that would take about 2 minutes it's not really what you'd call 'progress' is it.

I stopped using Norton Ghost when version 12 took about 25 minutes from booting the CD to actually selecting the backup file to restore from.

The v12 recovery cd would fail w/ 4 gigs of ram, v14 fixed that. -Anon, SATA working fine here, 4 drives in raid-0. No drivers required.

fyi- If you read the EULA upon booting to the recovery environment, it says something about granting Symantec permission to track websites you visit. In an attempt to identify malicious websites iirc.
