Norton 360-EDGE

Team EDGE released a brand new Symantec’s product: Norton 360. This is a huge pack of applications which should make your computer really safe. I’m using “should” because of my rich experiences with Norton products - the only thing which was ensured was a visible slowdown of my system and a really serious issues uninstalling their products. What’s more, the functionality of all these Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security packs was questionable at least. I found using other programms way more effective. Anyway, Norton 360 is here for you to try…

Norton 360 provides all-in-one protection that keeps you, your family, your PC, and your information secure. This comprehensive solution combines Symantec’s proven, industry-leading security and PC tune-up technologies with new automated backup and antiphishing features, providing a full circle of protection.

Top Features:

* Safeguards against online identity theft
* Protects important files from loss

* Discovers new files and backs up that data automatically
* Automatically back up important files to a secure online service
* Local backup to CD, DVD or external drive
* Automatically removes unwanted Internet clutter and temporary files that can slow down your PC’s performance

You could share which programs you use? I use Antivir and it’s the best anti-virus protection I ever had (plus its free)

  2. March 14th, 2007 | 15:50

Martin: what is this make thing ? Since when do you use gnu tools ?

  3. March 14th, 2007 | 15:50

well i have NOD32 and Outpost Firewall installed right now and I never had any problems. Actually I’m constantly finding that other people using AVG or another crap (or just running with no FW/AV) usually have a lot of problems… and I have to fix it all the time :)

NOD32 + Sygate Personal Firewall Pro.
Since I installed those two, I’ve never had any problems again.

Before I had Panda Titanium and that one really sucks, it even slows down or disconnects you from the internet.

I’m liking the Kaspersky suite. Plenty of features, plenty of ways to use it. Oh, and AVG is usually pretty good, it has detection rates probably close to Norton in the first place, I used to use it.

Avast pro + Sygate personal firewall pro here :)

  7. March 14th, 2007 | 16:06

nice package but I never use this kind of software

    antivirus
    firewall

the only thing I use is my routers firewall and a spyware software

I’d rather use Microsoft security software over Norton crap.
Okay, maybe not. But I wouldn’t use Norton.
Personally I use Avast anti-virus and Sunbelt Kerio firewall. Both are free.

Heh I don’t even have the windows firewall enabled. If you know how to lock your system down and know what sites to avoid and what adds to block, you can surf safe and easy, I haven’t had a virus I didn’t install myself in literally 7 years.

As for Norton, best description to date. The only thing Norton products do well is slow your pc down and fuck with your apps.

Oh and heaven forbid you install Norton Internet Security on a pc with only 1 user acount so no welcome screen. You have to be admin to install it, but you don;t, it will install from a standard user account then lock your system up because you don’t have admin rights. AND if won’t let you uninstall it.

    Awesome.

I have no clue if they fixed that bug but I doubt it.

I use Linux…And we don’t need ANY of these third-party security crap! :p

Notice how you never see a Symantec solution on Linux? Have a think about that. ;)

    March 14th, 2007 | 17:30

Don’t use Norton, it’s almost like a VIRUS itself! It’s been tested to SLOW down your system and integrate itself into your system so well you need special apps to get rid of it! (It’s designed to do that) My brother thought Norton was good (he’s a newb) until he used my computer (ZA and Kaspersky) and saw how much faster it was (although having a slower proc) then he made the switch.

To be fair linux has had a hell of alot more exploits than Windows could hope to have. The only difference is most linux distros are open so thousands of people fix the bugs, instead of being like microsoft and denying they exist altogether.

And a virus or intruder on a linux box can do ALOT more damage than a standard windows machine.

Best solution if you need AV is a cheap little linux box running smoothwall or IPcop. Problem solved ;)

  18. niggan8
    March 14th, 2007 | 18:10

the reason windows sucks is because of worms and viruses that have full administrative abilities to spread. not because of the damn exploits… every operating system has exploits

“And a virus or intruder on a linux box can do ALOT more damage than a standard windows machine.”

have you ever even used linux? that is a retarded statement… as most applications do not run as root… it is SAFER than windows by any regards… in fact vista has copied and implemented this feature.

  19. Adam
    March 14th, 2007 | 18:29

Well! Symantec is not a serious company with serious rls of their produts… The best antivirus in the world is McAfee.. Im using McAfee: Total Protection

    March 14th, 2007 | 20:13

Nod32 FTW!!! Mainly because of low ram usage. No firewall except XP integrated + use of spy sweeper and no trojans or an maliscious files =3

NOD32 and ZA - never had a worry, cept the trojan false alarm in Silverfall install

  28. klom
    March 15th, 2007 | 01:13

NOD32 is shit compared to Kaspersky. It is fast as it installs kernel mode drivers in XP. Which is bad and ridicolous practice for a legitimate program(the same thing rootkits do).

  29. Ben
    March 15th, 2007 | 01:29

NOD32 is actually consistently the highest detecting virus scanner, Kaspersky is a close second, but still damn good.

  30. ZV
    March 15th, 2007 | 02:53

Actually Kaspersky has better detection rates and is Cnet’s readers choice award winner, and it’s from Russia, where a lot of viruses come from so who better to fight them?? This site rates Kaspersky #2 (price) and Nod at #5, but both do a good job of detecting viruses.

Norton 360: Winner of PC Magazine Editor’s Choice Award. Why all these ranting when this software tops everyone else even if it’s not perfect? All that have been said are true for the Norton products dating 2006 and earlier.

That means you have got to try Norton 360 to see for yourself. This is a great product! I’ll buy it; but FREE is always better, right?

    @ niggan8

    @ ricco

Firstly, I’ve probably used more distros than you so whatever. And what are they teaching in schools these days? I really dunno I’ve been out and working in IT for the government for over a decade, you tell me kid.

Don’t like the facts? Tough shit, do the research for yourself I aint gonna do it.

As for the “root” and super user crap, yup if you follow the advice and run as a standard user you are a little safer. Just like if you follow the basic steps to secure a windows machine.

Stating Linux is safer is a farce. It’s not. You aren’t safer or better just because you use linux.

The simple fact that windows WON’T allow you to modify system code makes it safer. Linux distros are open, allowing you to recompile binaries and all that fun stuff.

No AV solutions for linux? YOU ARE ON CRACK.

Whatever I’m not gonna argue anyone with a brain or time to research knows I’m right.

And before you desperately try to flame me again, I use various linux distros at home so suck it.

    March 15th, 2007 | 17:26

the EDGE version doesn’t come with serial, you could use only 15 day trial, for now is pointless to download this

  38. phishybongwaters
    March 15th, 2007 | 17:28

DAmnit I wasn’t finished. The illusion of linux safety is simple to disect. The people that switch to linux ARE AWARE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING.

What do i mean? I mean linux users, most, are smarter than average users, simple as that. You have to be to switch over to linux cold. Even a dead simple distro Like Fedora Core 5 takes a bit of getting used to, doing simple windows style tasks usually takes about a day to get used to in Fedora.

So how this you whiny little kids.

Linux doesn’t make you safer BUT of the people that are using linux the majority know enuff to secure their box, which I will admit is much easier on a linux machine.

But this linux is safer by default crap doesn’t float with me, or anyone with half a brain. Linux bugs are fixed quicker, simple as that.

And exploits aren’t the problem? Do you even know what an exploit is? For christ sakes pal worms and such play havock with networks because of the traffic increase. Exploits allow attackers access levels they shouldn’t have, and most of the ones you hear about now deal with executing code on a remote machine with admin rights.

Thanks for the extremely immature(and very long) reply. I’m proud of your achievements in the IT field :) . I won’t bother with replying to most of your FUD, since this is a _release_ blog, but catch me on an IM sometime…maybe we can have a civilized debate/discussion.

One more thing: all three of those links you posted are slanted articles taken directly from the mouths of: Suprise! - “security experts” and AV software sellers.

Never had any problems using Nortons ,Always uninstals with no problems, and has never buggered up any applications.
Lots of programs will interfere or not work on ”dodgy” comps put together with incompatible hardware mixes and wrong drivers and cluttered registries etc.. But hey ive never had Windows crash on me either..maybe I just build and maintain them to well…lol

Upon installation of Norton 360, I’ve had nothing but problems - system slowdown, inability to send a POP3 email from Outlook, Norton itself freezing.

What a piece of junk! Far worse than 2006 Internet Security!

So tired of all babies who hasn’t used Norton since 2004. NIS 2006 was *good* although a bit slow-loading. That was fixed with the new interface and appl. motor in NIS 2007. On crappy systems, installation can go apeshit and cause a slow performing product but who the f-k is running a system like that other than my sister anyway? I see a lot of complaints about old Norton but funny, all the concerns about trojans, cleaning up spyware, lurking viruses are always posted by users of AVG, Kaspersky, NOD32 etc. and not the consumer products like NIS, McA etc. So I’m looking forward to Norton 360, just hoping to find a way to not pay for it this time. :)

I was a moderately happy user of norton internet security, and when my trial period ended I decided to “upgrade” to Norton 360 - looked great on description… WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! I am now going through my 10th attempt at installing, uninstalling, changing regedit, tweaking with services and other system configs (all according to Symantec’s support instructions), and STILL NOTHING.

I don’t know if Symantec alone is to blame, as I know that Vista is still a LOOOOONG way from stable and really usable, but my evaluation of Norton 360 is that it should NEVER have been released with so many flaws and needs for user intervention on basic configuration issues. Please reconsider other options before making this mistake.

    A very frustrated Vista+Norton 360 user.
