Nokia started research on flexible cell phone

Imagine tapping out text messages on a device the size of an index card and as flat as a piece of paper, then folding it in thirds to hold it to your ear and make a phone call. Refold it in a slightly different shape and wrap it around your wrist, where it becomes a watch and also communicates with an ear bud that lets you talk hands free. Nokia researchers, along with researchers at the University of Cambridge in England, have created an animated video describing such a vision for mobile devices, which could come in the future through nanotechnology developments.

The animation shows practical applications for several specific types of work that the scientists are developing based on their nanotechnology research, said Tapani Ryhanen, the head of multimedia devices research at Nokia Research Center. The concept video was created at the prodding of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, which opened an exhibit February 24 called”Design and the Elastic Mind,”he said. Currently, the researchers have developed “bits and pieces” of the technologies envisioned in the concept “but we are not yet at the level that we could integrate those things together into a device that we’re showing in this animation,” Ryhanen said. Some features of the device could start appearing in commercial products as soon as seven years from now, Nokia said.

in the 1950s they were convinced every home would have a robot butler by the 1970s, sometimes these scientists get carried away with hypethetical ideas.

  8. Martin
    February 26th, 2008 | 12:00

Of course they won’t release something like this if it’s not in market price range. But I guess the cost for developing it is pretty high..
I can’t wait to see what technology brings us in like 50 years. Very exciting.

    About $20,000,000..

but you would be the only one on your block with such a device.
I think there are right about such a thing being possible in the future but it’s going to take the point where the various technologies shown are almost free before cell phone companies would start to integrate them into phones. Note that most cell phones (even the iphone) cost very little to produce. Just that olfactory sensor is going to take decades to get to the point it’s cheap enough that someone might think of using it the way they demonstrate. Then look at the way they reshape the device. Anyone think that’s going to be reliable any time soon? I’m just hopeful they get the flexible screens (like Sony has demonstrated) to be reliable when bent like that in ten years, let alone make it into something you might wear.

@10 I thought in economy, the main thing is, how special your goods is. I am thinking, if I own just half the technologies shown, I would definitely integrate them not just into mobile phone technology, but everything - other companies would gladly pay for it. And finally if you would own such a thing and the developing price would be 20 000 000 bucks, i am quite sure, that you would sell all of them the same day you entered the market ;]

Getting ahead of themselves…. FIRST, they need to release the black and white version, thats 14 inches thick. This will forever be known as Generation 1. after this, they introduce a version thats a mere 15 inches thick, but has 2 color lcd screen. after that comes the second generation, where its 11 inches thick, but has twice the hard drive size, at only triple the price. Eventually, after years and years of advanced research, we are down to a 7 inch version, and everyone with previous versions wonders what the hell they bought the “old” one for… Then comes the REAL technological advancements when the whole product is scrapped because Microsoft has seen their great new technology, and copied it directly, naming the NEW version something slightly different, possibly starting with the letter Z.

Amazing video. I find this quite far-fetched, but heck, who knows? If you told everyone back in the 70’s about our day to day lives they’d probably just laugh at you. Or what if you go even further back? The trend has been the same the last century, technology has been improving really fast, and now it’s almost like we’re in hyperdrive. I sure love the time we live in!

This is amazing! I remember seeing the iPhone commercials and said to myself, “the day that product is for sale you will get one”, what a reality that was. I paid a line holder to stand for 13 hours for me and I bought 4 iPhones. I then found out how bad they suck unless you mod the iPhone :) No matter the cost, no matter the price when the Morph is available I will pay a line holder and get one all on American Express’ Tab.

first of all number 37 nokia has created a touch screen device its the nokia N87, avaiable in japan and nokia shouldn’t be concentrating on this phone if their current phones are sh!t. Their batteries are crap they don’t last very long even though they are li-on or whatever, thier batteries explode here in england and i mean literally explode BOOM!! and i think that phone is highly exaggerated and everyone is getting eager to see that phone when they most likely be dead before its made

  60. i will get that

they will kill apple sony nextel with that phone

  61. kifart
    February 26th, 2008 | 20:12

Here’s what not’s going to happen:
It won’t be smelling things, it won’t be charging from solar power (in fact, I hardly see any space in it for a battery, so expect a 5-minute battery life). It won’t be morphing into different colors or taking on skins. Really, the smallest creatures on earth that do it are larger than this ‘phone’… that’s if we manage to do bionanotechnology, which is another 200 years away.

What you can assume will happen: Flexible phone, that could fold onto your wrist with a lock mode. Expect it to be VERY FRAGILE. You put your wrist on a table and it will break (the phone, not your wrist). You can also expect touch-sense buttons, but those won’t work in warm weathers, as they will be sensing heat, not pressure.

Also, expect this thing to be 99% out of range, that’s a promise until the put a cell phone station between EVERY BLOCK. Oh, and there’s no way this thing will have a camera, or have enough energy to vibrate or be loud enough so you could hear unless you shove the whole thing into your ear.

    !KNOW THE LIMITS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY!

you guys are missing the point here, this is the concept of a final application, it’s not like one day it doesn’t exist and the next day it’s shipping to your home or something, pieces of technology on that phone will start showing up one at a time in our phones, and hopefully someday we will get close to that phone…

obviously don’t expect to be exactly like that, but don’t expect to be worse either, history as told us their will obviously have foolish people saying things wont evolve much more or things are going to evolve astronomically, but the truth is, they always evolve we just don’t know how much

It sounds like you know nothing at all about nanotech, its theories, and possibilites or its limits. Nanotech has been around for over 2 decades in theory and has been implimented for the last last decade. When you start seeing things like this hit the “mainstream” then that usually means that it has already been under developement for at least 5+ years.

Secondly the material will be strong as hell, and the battery life will be unbelieveable, go google, “carbon nanotubes” and “nanobatteries”

so many of you don’t understand the point of R&D… its not the fact that they’re making a cool phone. its the breakthroughs in science and technology that is the real asset. nanotechnology has endless possibilities from healthcare to energy production. get a grip and open a book or get lost in a wikipedia hole for half a day reaseraching something before you spout doomsday.

development of high performance cars for racing seems pretty pointless as well until you realize that it affects commercial vehicles way down the line.
