Nokia and Skype to finally work together
Skype’s software for making free and cheap phone calls over the Internet will be built in to some Nokia Corp. smart phones. In a move announced this week at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, the companies said Skype will be initially integrated with Nokia’s Nseries devices, which run on Nokia’s Symbian S60 operating system. The integration will start with the N97, which will be released in June. A U.S. carrier for the phone has not been announced. The built-in Skype application will be integrated with the phone’s address book, so users can see when their Skype contacts are available and make free voice calls or send instant messages to them.
As with other Skype applications, users will also be able to pay to make voice calls through Skype to cell phone or landline numbers. The application will be able to run over both high-speed 3G cellular data networks and over Wi-Fi wireless connections to the Internet. Skype, which comes from eBay Inc., is already available as a downloadable application for a variety of operating systems and phones, including numerous Nokia products. But preloading the application “removes an inhibitor to consumers because it’s already there,” Skype’s Chief Operating Officer Scott Durchslag said.

HELL yeah!!!
Free long dinstance!!!
Nice, hopefully we'll be having native skype on the iPhone soon!
the existing installable skype clients for s60 are no real skype clients. they still make a regular phonecall to a 8provider-owned) destination wich provides a skype gateway. befor that gateway there is no VOIP as there is no IP.
and the 'ap' news doesnt mention explicitly that this will be different, but implies that it will be the same tech as befor: "[skype client] is already available as a downloadable application for a variety of operating systems and phones, including numerous Nokia products. But preloading the application “removes an inhibitor to consumers because it’s already there,” – Scott Durchslag (Skype).
Wow, this is the future of phones – free calls to anyone on the world; via wireless broadband. Excellent!
My e65 came preinstalled with skype. Uses purely a data connection. I have made many ip to ip calls with it. I fail to see the new development.
so, when will that be on the iPhone?
Oooh, app store doesnt allow apps that substitute the moneymachine?

You said it yourself, you have failed
Fring does this and much more. It integrates with Skype, Gtalk, Yahoo, MSN and other contacts, has SIP settings for VOIP calls. The voice clarity is really good. It's available for both Symbian S60 based handsets and iPhones.
I forgot the link the link: http://www.fring.com
Ouch, that's a bad news for the built-in SIP client, which was integrated with the address book and general calling features for years, but was removed from quite a few recently-released phones.
I hope Nokia doesn't abandon the built-in SIP client, it was the only reason I switched to Symbian from WinMo.
