No more earphones in the streets?

Some senators in the United States are probably totally bored with general stuff they should take care of so they tries to gain some attention of media. Carl Kruger, a senator for Brooklyn, wants the ban proposed in his “distracted walking” bill to be extended to mobile phones, handheld emailing devices such as Blackberries and video games. Alarmed by a spate of deaths in the city caused by iPod wearers inadvertently stepping into oncoming traffic, the New York senator is introducing legislation this week that would make it an offence, punishable by a $100 fine, to use any electronic device while crossing a street.

Interesting thing about this law is that it should punish people only in New York, nowhere else. Mr Kruger said: “We have a major public safety crisis. If you’re so involved in your electronic device that you can’t see or hear a car coming, this is indicative of a larger problem that requires some sort of enforcement beyond the application of common sense.” He urged iPod users to limit their activities to parks. What about the law forcing you to switch your mobile phone off when you cross the street? Someone could call you…

lol the Americans really don’t like walkers do they? What with ‘j walking’ and the fact anyone walking about is considered suspiceous.

Well, let’s see… First, Carl Kruger is a New York State Senator, not a federal senator, which might explain why any laws he introduced would only have effect in New York…

Commenting on the politics of a system you don’t understand can be hazardous to your credibility.

That, and do y’all proofread any of this stuff before hitting submit? “so they tries”? Uhhh… Yeah. “a New York senator is introducing legislation”? You already named the Senator in question. “it should punish people only in New York”? Ummm, why should it? Seriously, get a native English speaking editor and have them proof this stuff.

YeahRight: fixed. we all know there are some language problems here but you get the point of this news, that’s what counts…

If someone cross the street, it’s the car who is supposed to be careful. Power to the pedestrian.

Actually, no, I don’t get the point — most likely because there isn’t one.

Some unknown and unimportant dipstick New York State Senator introduces a stupid law, one of two thousand similarly stupid laws introduced this week, and someone across the pond who knows nothing about American politics writes (sort of) an article about it as though it were a meaningful event rather than a pointless exercise in daily political stupidity that will go nowhere, change nothing, and has exactly zero chance of being enacted.

This is not news and, beyond politicians are stupid and that writing about a political system you don’t understand is a bad idea, there is no point.

  8. February 9th, 2007 | 16:20

YeahRight: shame that over 400 internet news servers informed about this “pointless” event, including such ones as BBC, Reuters, New York Times and many others…

and the solution is really simple, noone forces you to read it or either visit this website.

Well, actually this means MUCH more than you think and can be a catalyst for changes in OTHER states and even other countries.
It’s called PRECEDENT and is the basis for enactment of the same laws in other states. If you lived in NY and saw how many people DIE because they think talking on the phone or playing with all sorts of portable equipment is cool, then you would change your mind. Sure the car or bus or TRAIN is supposed to look out for pedestrians, but with THOUSANDS of them running around, accident are bound to happen. Just like banning talking on non-hands-free cell phones is a good law, so is this one, it saves LIVES!

Another stunning example of the calibre of the userbase here. I honestly don;t know why the bother to bring us news when all they get is lame half assed comments.

You know what yeah right normally I’d tell you to go fuck yourself. But instead I”m going to tell you to offer to be an editor here so we can all bitch and moan about everything you post.

Don’t like how Martin types? Don’t fucking read it you pompus fuck. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Martin has a better grasp of the english language than most americans, atleast most of the ones that post complaints here.

And Martin is learning english as a second or third language, so what’s your excuse?

Now, this is surely news worthy just as much as an episode recap of Lost is worthy of being here. It’s a story that alot of us can relate to, so take your ego and shove it up your ass.

If you’d like to continue your pointless diatribe directed at me, you’ll find me on the NTi forums.

In closing, talking out your ass while your head is stuck up there only ends up with you spewing shit all day.

Both ‘English’ and ‘Americans’ should be capitalized. ‘atleast’ is two words, not one. I could go on, your rant is filled with obvious errors, but clearly there’d be little point. You people are too stupid be able to recognize your mistakes, let alone learn from them.

Anyways if you really wanna go down that road give me your IP address and we’ll see how my bad grammar affects your pc.
Go back to bed it’s past your bedtime, go jerk off to girls gone wild and lick your hand clean.

i live in brooklyn, though this asshat is not my senator. there are many dumb voters and idiot politicians who would put cars before people here, even though millions of people don’t drive to, or for, work. i regularly key, kick, punch, and spit on cars that try to run me over in the crosswalk after short-stopping on a daily basis. the problem is not “distracted walking”, it’s self-obsessed asshole drivers.

    February 10th, 2007 | 02:55

pancakeface - ‘the problem is not “distracted walking”, it’s self-obsessed asshole drivers.’

C’mon, it’s a bit of both surely. How many people do you see walking along texting or web-surfing on their phones/devices, expecting other people to make allowances for their path or movement. Also, if you are listening to an mp3 player, surely you should increase your visual awareness to compensate.

The best thing a law like this would do is reduce the repair/cleanup costs on the vehicles that hit them. At least most of the surviving “distracted walkers” would learn to pay attention next time and the rest would be appropriate culling of fuckwits, which assists evolution.

“the New York senator is introducing legislation this week that would make it an offence, punishable by a $100 fine, to use any electronic device while crossing a street.”

wait, does it really say *any* electronic device? Even if say I’m using a pacemaker, or a hearing aid, I should switch it off before crossing the street?

    lol

  25. [deXter]
    February 10th, 2007 | 08:06

I can just see the court cases piling up…

Cop: “Hey you.. you there with the earphones.. you sir are violating the law! Gimme that!”

Deaf Man: “But.. but I can’t hear without them, that’s my hearing aid!”

Cop: “Too bad, now pay up $100 if you want it back!”

Deaf Man: “What did you say?”

Jokes apart, this is actually a good law: provided its limited only to mobiles, PDAs, PGDs and PMPs. I personally own one of all the above and use atleast one on the street; but I always put them away while crossing, boarding a vehicle, etc. A friend of mine died trying to get a better signal on his cellphone, so I know how serious this issue is.

    February 10th, 2007 | 08:37

Here where I live, this isn’t that big of a problem:P There aren’t that many cars… but lately in the new legislation, cars have priority over pedestrians. For example if I got hit by a car on the street, that’s only my fault. A pedestrian only got priority when he or she’s is crossing a street on the corner or walking on the sidewalks.

  27. February 10th, 2007 | 09:02

Are u people insane. Can anyone honestly say passing a law to make it illegal for people to cross the road wearing an ipod is a good thing. Come on, how much sense does it take to actually stop and look around to see whats coming at you. When are we going to start taking resposiablity for are own actions instead of counting on our goverment to make laws to protect us from ourselves. Whats next a five hundred doller fine for not chewing our food the correct amount of times.

Actually, I believe this is not a good law.
First of all, it infringes on our rights and freedoms…I know…I know some would say “come on, it’s no big deal” but I believe it is, this kinf of stuff is starting to lean toward the fascist end of things and can be a precedent to draft many other ridulous laws.
Such as…How many people get hit by cars while wearing sunglasses? well, let’s draft a law that you have to remove your sunglasses before crossing the street - punishable by a $200 fine…I could go on and on.

The other point is that making such a thing illegal tends to absolve the driver of any responsibility in the event that he hits and kills someone under these circumstances. Which of course means that your family will not receive any insurance benefits in the event of your untimely demise.
Open season on all Ipod wearers…

Also, do you think this moron of a politician actually cares about you and I? no way, he probably drafted up this law for one of 3 reasons…to get publicity because he is running for re-election, wants a way to increase the government coffers, or has some vested interest in seing insurance institutions not have to pay out so much money in settlements or seeing Ipod sales diminish…perhaps he’s a Sony man.
