Nintendo Wii still atop console sales

Bloomberg reports that the Nintendo Wii outsold the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 in the U.S. last month. Nintendo sold 666,000 of its Wii consoles in June compared to the 405,500 PS3’s sold and 219,800 Xbox 360’s. It’s interesting to note that the PS3 sold nearly 200,000 more units for the month than the Xbox 360. Both Sony and Microsoft recently increased the size of the hard drive inside their respective consoles to lure new buyers. The minimum hard drive on the PS3 will now increase to 80GB with the Xbox 360 growing to 60GB. NPD Group says 10.9 million Wii consoles have been sold since it launched in November of 2006 – that tally pushes the Wii past the Xbox 360 in total U.S. sales despite the Microsoft’s consoles one-year head start.

The Nintendo Wii is still all but impossible to find in many areas of the country, something Nintendo keeps promising to remedy with increased production of the consoles. The gaming industry as a whole is booming right now with total industry sales rising by 53% to $1.69 billion in June, up from $1.1 billion in June of 2007. Bloomberg reports that console sales have grown 54% to $615.1 million from $399.2 million last year despite. NPD analyst Anita Frazier says that total sales for the gaming industry in 2008 are likely to reach $22 billion.

I have all 3 and I hate to say it, but the Wii is junk compared to the other 2. It’s hard to beat PS3, but I guess you can if your console is half the price…and also half as good!

I think the Wii is the most popular not cause of graphics or strategy games but because of the controller that appeals to people who like simple games like mario and sonic and other stuff like that.

“The Nintendo Wii is still all but impossible to find in many areas of the country, something Nintendo keeps promising to remedy with increased production of the consoles.”

This sentence lacks comprehensibility :-) it should say possible, not impossible!

You know why Wii sells so much? Because girls love it and they manipulate their boyfriend’s to buy one. They really think they can lose weight with Wii because of Wii fit.

I tried all three, I must say that Wii is really funny, it is much more social than the rest. So if you have are many, go get a wii.

Wii is not half the price, its only £110 less than a PS3.

Wii is expensive compared to any other console.

The fact you have to buy the controller in 2 full priced halves doesn’t help

I know it sounds harsh saying it sucks, but when you save your hard earned money and buy and xb0×360 you get misinformed people say you know me and my great great gramdmother played a whole game of baseball at the christmas party and that whoppwii is the greatest thing since sliced cheese.
That is why this thing is still marked up overpriced over hyped game cube. I like nintendo but they won’t produce something better while this thing can still create price gouging for outdated game play.

The only reasons the PS3 is selling more is two fold, firstly and I believe the main point of sale, it’s still the cheapest way to get a blu ray player. Secondly the hardcore $ony fanboy sheep will follow the console regardless to the fact it STILL has no decent titles and according to Jack Tretton, won’t for another few years! WTF! If this is what $ony fanboys expect from such a supposedly amazing machine then they deserve to waste their money. A console is a games machine FFS, without a decent library, it’s not worth anything. Slag the 360 off all you like with RROD etc. but at the end of the day, it has a killer software library and some awesome games on the horizon for the winter, with the new Xbox experience on the way you can wax lyrical all you want about PS3, it’s too little, too late.

Nintendo sells the most game systems, but over 95% of the games for the Wii are total shyte. They are cheaply made Chinese games, made in the equivalent of a sweatshop for videogames. I dont remember the name of the company that makes them ALL (yes, ALL), but it is used by just about every publisher to make shyte games. They hire chinese programmers right out of school and pay them super low wages, but the students get experience working there. Shyte games though, like I said.

Whoa so much hatred for the Wii :(

Nothing wrong at all with the Wii, its all about having fun, not about cutting edge graphics… And the vast majority of games are indeed fun, if you don’t laugh whilst playing rayman raving rabids then you must be dead:P

P.s, is it true if you fit a plastic bag around the edge of a 360 it turns into a hovercraft:P

It all depends on how many real life friends you have… If you have a lot of people coming over to play together (video games that is) then the wii is unbeatable.

Not riding but I’ve played all 3 and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Its just that the Wii is more acceptable because my 4 year old can pick it up and play and my 80 year old grandmother can grasp the concept of it. Its made to make it easier for anyone to play games that never have played them before. It also makes for a good party game when you have folks over. The curiosity over how motion control works for a game is through the roof.

The Wii is not all powerful but I do have to say that due to the fact that any and everyone can pick it up and play its definitely the best system by far. Graphics used to make up the reason why folks would get a system but now times have changed and people want to have fun again and Nintendo brought that so expect the Wii to be on top until the next go round of systems

    @ 16 Buzz

Fun is very subjective. A grandmother playing Wii Bowling will call it fun. I won’t. I call it entertaining to watch and humourous to attempt to play. It’s not that it’s a bad game. It’s just that… I just don’t get the same enjoyment I do from it if I played StarCraft or Oblivion.

The Wii is a simplistic, family orientated console. Note the family orientated part. I just played Rock Band for the 360 for most of the afternoon with my friends. I would personally argue that the Wii caters to a specific social aspect. It’s light entertainment like inoffensive sitcoms on American TV. Or a cheesy 50s advert with the line: “Wholesome fun for the entire family!” and a middle class man with spectacularly white teeth grinning at you.

My gf told me that she wouldn’t mind having a Wii so that her mum and nan might get a kick out of it and play Wii Fit. That sort of sums up the Wii for me.

I don’t have any consoles. I play games I download for the PC. I used to play consoles back in 1993. I also had a 14.400 Baud modem back then. US Robotics HST. I also downloaded games for my Amiga 500 then too. I had the Super Magic-com. I copied games onto 3.5 inch disks. I used to like to play Super Mario Bros. Now I don’t play many games. Instead I prefer to download movies and watch them. Sometimes I download music and burn it to a CD to listen too in my car. I used to use “950’s” to make free phone calls too. Today with internet is much better. RELEASE LOG RULES! MR. X is also very cool.

I prefer adult games, something the wii will never do.
I also prefer better graphics, better sound..the list
    goes on and on.
    I have held off buying a 360 b/c i don’t like the first
person shooter games that constantly get released on it.
And i have put off getting a ps3 because i am waiting for
more decent games to come out.

Sticking with my good ol ps2 for now.
Might buy a ps3 when resident evil comes out for it, and
    some new kratos action. :)

As a fan of ego-shooters, I bought the Wii. Because of it’s controller, this is the ONLY console to go for if you like playing shooters. The controllers of the xbox360 and the ps3 are a turd when it comes to shooters.

“all but impossible” makes sense. It’s like “next to impossible”, or “almost impossible”. Basically it’s saying that the Wii is still hard to find even though Nintendo keeps promising to fix/remedy the problem by making more Wiis.
