Nintendo sold 350 000 Wii consoles in 1 week
While Sony recently enjoyed a fairly hearty boost in sales thanks to the American “Black Friday” Thanksgiving spendstravaganza, it appears that Nintendo came out on top. The company has come forward today with some staggering sales numbers for the week of Nov. 18-24, and it reportedly “sold more products than in any other time in its illustrious history” with combined sales of DS and Wii systems topping the one million mark. The record-breaking numbers for the units put the DS at 653,000 units sold and the Wii at 350,000 units sold. The Gameboy Advance held the previous record, with 600,000 units sold during the week back in 2005.
While the DS’ stranglehold remains as dominant as ever, Nintendo notes that the Wii sales during the week rivaled launch sales, and that the company was well on its way to moving 17.5 million units worldwide by the end of Q1 2008. Nintendo’s George Harrison explained the unstoppable money machine that is Nintendo of late: “As shoppers look for ways to maximize their limited holiday spending money, they turn to gifts that can be used by the entire family. Wii and Nintendo DS offer something for every member of the family. They’re the most fun video game experiences at the most affordable price.” The Wii will likely remain a relatively elusive beast going into December.

Now actually bring out some decent games for it, yes there are family games who it is aimed at but also brink out some more mature ones that are not 10 minute quick laugh games.
The only thing the Wii has that keeps it in the same ring with PS3 and XBOX360 is that controller - without it the whole thing is LAAAAAAME!

As a potential game addict, I have decided to avoid ever purchasing this console. Also I have no interest in trying to explain to my boss that I was late for work because I just couldn’t stop playing with my Wii befor e I left the house.

The Wii is a great console, and Nintendo deserve the success that the Wii has been.
Considering that it is graphically inferior, it is much more satisfying to play than the other two next gen consoles, which seem to have forgotten what console gaming is all about, and seem intent on tricking out with gadgets etc, & relying on a loyal fanbase rather than actually creating a console that people want.

I’m no fanboy, and hold no affiliation to Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft, but if someone produces a good product that I like, I give props to it. The only thing that holds Nintendo back is the ‘cutesy’ association, and even then, if you decide to look beyond Mario & the usual glut of Japanese RPGs, you will see a few decent adult-orientated Wii games: Red Steel, Resident Evil 4 & Res Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Scarface, Canis Canem Edit, oh…and probably the most interactive version of Manhunt 2 you’ll ever play!

If you are going to persist with the whole ‘My console’s better than your console/Wii is for girls, and only real men play pimped-out/tricked-out consoles’, allow me to bring you down to earth:
In this ‘gen’ of the console wars, the Wii was the underdog. It didn’t have the same power or clout as the Xbox360, or the Sony PS3. Hell - it didn’t even have much of a loyal fanbase considering how badly the Gamecube flopped. - Despite all that, it has outsold the PS3 many times over, and has outsold the XBox 360, even though the 360 was out 1 year before the Wii was launched.
All 3 consoles have displayed a fair amount of unoriginal titles, but how many FPS shooters do you have to play before finally thinking ‘Damn! This is pretty much the same game I’ve played hundereds of times before, just with nicer graphics, and slightly different weapons’? - As for Sports, try playing Tiger Woods on a PS3, THEN try playing it on a Wii. No matter how graphically superior the PS3 may be, you will not get the same ‘immersion’ as you will when you’re actually swinging the club, as you get to do in the Wii version. - And let’s face it, while Nintendo may have pushed its ‘Mario’ franchise to stupid limits, the Wii has been INCREDIBLY innovative in comparison to the usual mentality of the ‘one-upmanship’ development of the 360 & PS3.
One thing’s for sure. Whether you like the Wii or not, that console has pretty much shaken up the whole console gaming world, and now Sony and Microsoft will be trying to develop something special for the next generation of console gaming, not just retreading old ground….and that must be good for everybody! So give the Wii its due, even if you don’t like it. It’s done some pretty amazing stuff, and reignited the interest of what was becoming a very stagnant industry!

That’s nice. I own a DS and love it. However, for my first next-gen purchase, I went with the 360 on Black Friday. I’ve heard that after finishing the few great first-party games (Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc) the appeal of the Wii really drops off, and you’re left waiting for the next first-party tidbit. I’m very happy with my 360 so far. Hope the Wii turns out to be more than just an avenue for first-party content like the Gamecube was.

I own a few consoles and the only thing that will let nintendo down is the lack of releases, I havent bought a WII yet but would like too, but everytime I look at the games shelf its the same old titles from the release date.
I own a DS and that needs more decent titles too. I own a 360 but the games are so damn expensive that if i buy the pc version its at least £10-15 cheaper and looks better on my 8800GTX. Xbox Live should be free, no way i’m gonna pay for that when i can play TF2 on the pc for free. Infact I havent turned my 360 on for 3 months.
I dont see why anyone would want to buy a PS3 overpriced, ugly, poor range of games. If you have one sell it before its too late.
I personally think the Wii goes great next to my 360. Lets face it, you will get gaming on the wii that you will never get on the PS3/360 and vice versa.
I’ve had hours connecting my wiimote to my PC and writing scripts for it, the wii brings fun for people who have real friends.
And my 360 meets my hardcore needs, but I could easily replace my 360 with a PS3 and still fill that void (if it had more games). but I could never get something to replace the Wii.
Has it not ever occured to anyone that a good, modern PC is far superior to any piece of crap console? How can you play with annoying joypads? Mouse + keyboard is the superior way of controlling. Plus a PC is upgradeable so you’re not stuck with outdated technology after 2 years. In fact, Crysis wasn’t made for consoles because they’re too weak and inferior! Even the PS3 is already too old for it! And finally and most importantly, the games are just plain better for PC. Good luck trying to play quality games like Civilization (the real game, not the dumbed down console version for children that’s on its way) or Medieval Total War on a console.

Sorry if this comes across as a bit of a flame. It’s not intended to be, but what defines ‘hardcore gaming’?
Yes, I know that there are several more releases on the 360, but (In my opinion!!) they tend to be mostly mature FPS shooters, either with a military theme, or a horror theme, but is that ‘hardcore gaming’, or is ‘hardcore gaming’ defined by something else? (Seriously, like I said, I don’t want to flame. I’m just genuinely curious of the answer!)
Mind you, it is cool to see that there are gamers such as Rick out there who are happy to have both a PS3/Xbox 360 AND a Wii, who are happy with both (or all 3!) of their consoles, and don’t degenerate into mudslinging idiots whenever there is a games console discussion anywhere on the internet. It definitely puts all the fanboiz to shame.

I think a lot of you Xbox360 types are missing the point. Yes its a great bit of kit…but….the Wii and DS are better for kids.
Maybe you will understand one day when you have familys of your own, but the Wii is great for interacting with your kids, they can pick it up, and yes, it is a bit noddy, but I tell you this, that is also the beauty of it.

And no, I think another stick of ram and a top end graphics card will be the same price, but at least the Xbox360 is more futureproof than a PC. People dont work with what a PC can handle, as there is always new stuff for it, but companys do tend to kepp getting better on a new console, as they have guidelines to stick to, so go that little bit further.
I just find it ubsurd that Crysis is desogned to work at its best, with technology thats not with us yet, that just sums it up for me.

The games coming out in the last few years have been fairly stale and only incrementally better… as opposed to revolutionary. Video game addicts are looking for something new and radical… not the PS4 or the M$Box 720 Elite Cardboard edition. The reason the Wii is so successful, besides being cheaper, is because it caters to people/groups who have not had the chance to become utterly bored by the offerings of the game publishers. I miss the 1990’s.
hilarious to see the bashing of the wii. now people, who can tell me who’s console is truly the next gen console? Drum roll please…… yes, that’s right, it’s the wii. Why? Well plain and simple really, Nintendo, in a rather clever move, decided to broaden their demographic in who will actually use a console, thus expanding it’s user base, and to do this, they changed the way you interacted with the the console, this is a true next gen console. M$ and Sony, went with the rather predictable and lets be honest here, lame approach of just expanding on a previous design with more power. Makes sense if you’re betting that people will lap up it up. But it’s not next gen at all. Next gen is a console with ways for users to interact with it differently, not to make them ooo and aww at the graphics and sounds. Sony and M$ fail at this miserably and haven’t strengthened their potential sales by making this mistake. Sony made the PS3 at a loss hoping to recoup this in massive sales, but so far, it’s fallen flat on it’s arse, even with the 360 doing better. The problem is, Sony believed from past success with the PS’s that users would hand the cash over without thinking. But with lack of games at the release time, they couldn’t of made a bigger mess of the console. There’s no doubt that the PS3 has some serious gaming power, but what’s that, if the games are few? I think maybe around this time next year Sony will have closed the gap and or over taken Nintendo, who knows? But by then the damage is done, Nintendo will have raked in a fortune and can then put this money to good use in R&D. You can slate the wii all you want, but people the facts speak the truth here, the wii is wiping the floor with the PS3 and the 360, you can’t argue with that, and you probably will, only because you’ll own one of these consoles and it feels a kick in the teeth to hear your precious little consoles being beaten by a console with less power. Nintendo have played a blinder and are making a fortune, pure brilliant business. Btw i don’t own any console, prefer my PC’s.
I’m only 16, I’ve got a PS3 for “serious” games such as FPS, racing games,etc. I’ve ordered a Wii for more “fun” games such as the Mario ones.

You will probably find that the price of the wii effects the sales more than it being a great console. The wii has about 100 games for it atm, about 5 of them are nintendo made top titles for use with their controller. The rest can be bought on other consoles. Which shows that they need to make more games for it fast as they will be sold as quickly as theyre being bought.

I’ve been a hardcore gamer for 20 years I can say the Wii is the best console I’ve ever owned. I also have a 360 but the Wii has much more variety and some amazing titles. People who say the Wii is only for casuals, too kiddy, and doesnt have any games are idiots. IDIOTS.
Medal of Honor: Heroes and Metroid Prime 3 have the best FPS controls on any conole period. Super Mario Galaxy is an incredible platformer and one of the highest rated games of all time. Sin & Punishment and many other amazing VC own as well. The superior versions of Resident Evil 4, The Godfather and Manhunt 2… I could go on and on really.
I knew clicking on this article it was gonna be full of people bashing the Wii over all the usual misconceptions, stop being groupthinkers people, just because Nintendo has commercials geared towards casuals doesn’t mean thats all thats available on the system, stop letting commercials and internet fanboys think for you.

Anywho, everybody saying the other systems are superior really are simple minded. You cannot compare the Wii to these other systems like the 360. They focus on graphics while the Wii focuses on revolutionary gameplay. It is all a matter of opinion, and my opinion is that the Wii’s revolutionary unique gamestyle is well worth the decrease in graphics…Even when the XBOX 720 comes out with its increase in graphics, the Wii will continue to be just as good as it is now…gameplay will always outlast better graphics…

I like how this became a huge console flame war. The main point of the article as a whole is about Nintendo the company, not the Wii specifically. If you look at the numbers it points out that the DS has sold 300,000 more copies than the Wii. Nobody mentions the hand-helds. As a quote unquote hardcore gamer, I own them all. My 360 gets the most use. It’s been out the longest and has the most titles, remember, it has a whole year on the other two. My Wii is mainly for party gaming. I own Metroid, Mario, and a few other single players, but the system is designed for multi-player… If only they’d use online a bit more. PS3 only gets used for a couple of blu-rays and a couple games. Even after a year there are barely any exclusives. Honestly, I’ve heard how the PS3 has the most power of the consoles, but it isn’t utilized yet. The Price is rapidly dropping on it, but it is still posing a big loss for Sony, and many exclusives are leaving Sony. When it establishes itself, probably in another year or so, it will be much better. Currently it does its best as a DVD player.
As far as PC gamers are concerned, yes, they are the best looking games, but people can’t afford to upgrade as often as necessary. While graphics lag on the systems, you get longevity. As a bunch have pointed out, the PS2 is still limping along after 7 years. For the record, I have a Mac, I can’t play crap on this thing, and I don’t really care. I didn’t buy it for games I bought it for work, so I can’t claim to be an expert on PC gaming. That is all.
Wii reminds me of the Furby and Tickle Me Elmo crazes several years back. Everyone went crazy over that crap during the holidays but then by march, everyone started to realize the purchased a novelty that now just sits in a corner or in the closet collecting dust. Wii is all flash with no content and will remain that way because of a lack of hardware muscle. Like many have said, take the controller away and you have a super-low end pc (without a HDD). When the First-Party titles become boring, the console will die. Then all the 10yr olds who thought they were so cool will move on to more sophisticated gaming hardware. Bottom line. Nintendo hardware is an endangered species. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Sorry, I don’t think you can compare the Wii to Furby & ‘Tickle Me Elmo’. It is probably more realistic to compare the Wii to an iPod. After all, Furbies & Tickle-me-Elmos are toys, aimed solely at a small market demographic (10 year old kids). - The Wii, just like the iPod, is an electronic-based device that has a much wider, almost universal, market demographic, which spans all ages and both sexes.
Now, I’m not bashing the PS3 or the XBox 360. Both are fine machines, but they have not developed in any way from their predecessors other than by souping up the graphics. The Wii may not have the best graphics, but it more than compensates for this.
…and like I said in a previous post, Nintendo had the cojones to actually innovate & diversify, rather than just beef up the old ‘tried & tested’. Whether you like the Wii or you don’t you have to give it some credit. After all, it has moved the gaming industry into brand new territory, and you can guarantee that Sony & Microsoft will be racking their brains trying to follow in Nintendo’s footsteps when they develop their next-gen console….and that has to be good news for everybody!
So shut up, give the console a little kudos, and wait to see what your preferred console company comes up with in the future.

If you take a close look at the history of videogaming, Nintendo are probably the oldest games manufacturer. They’ve been around as a company since 1889, producing playing cards. They were one of the first to develop new games ideas, including, what is historically credited as the first platformer (You might have heard of a game called ‘Donkey Kong’), and since 1975, have been COMPLETELY devoted to videogaming hardware & software. - Relatively speaking, they have had it hard. Unlike Sony & MS, who are relative newcomers to the world of consoles. (In fact, Sony entered the console world through a design that Nintendo rejected!)
So, to call the Nintendo Wii a ‘novelty’, and to call Nintendo Hardware redundant in the same post is a bit like saying Ford horseless carriages will never catch on, and are also not as good as Ferarris.

So true. Nintendo is the one bringing fresh ideas into the gaming world, and you can bet MS and Sony will be thinking how to doing something “new” and different. In fact if it wasn’t for Nintendo’s success MS and Sony you can bet wouldn’t be looking for ways to break into the casual market
