Nintendo makes you move: Wii Fit

For years, video games have been blamed for turning kids into idle layabouts who only venture off the couch to fill up on potato chips and soda. Nintendo now aims to shatter that image with a game that aims to get players off the couch and lead them to stretch, shake and sweat their way to a healthy life. “Wii Fit,” which arrives on U.S. store shelves on Monday, is expected to draw new customers to Nintendo’s wildly popular Wii video game console. The $90 game comes with a shoulder-width “balance board” that senses tiny shifts in a person’s posture and is used to control a cartoonish character on the TV screen.

It is forecast to be the industry’s latest blockbuster game after last month’s “Grand Theft Auto 4,” the criminal action title that racked up $500 million in global sales in one week. “They’ll sell everything they can manufacture,” said Signal Hill analyst Todd Greenwald. “It extends the life cycle of the Wii a little bit and gets people to go out and buy another game from Nintendo.” The Wii has proven to be the runaway hit of the video game industry, thanks to its easy-to-learn motion-sensing controller, simple games and low price.  At the other end of the spectrum from “Grand Theft Auto 4,” “Wii Fit” coaches players through more than 40 exercises that range from tightrope-walking to yoga stances to push-ups. U.S. consumers bought 714,000 Wiis in April, nearly double the sales of Microsoft Xbox 360 and SonyPlayStation 3 combined.

    bram,

when you grow up and have kids, maybe you’ll know why the wii is here…

after these years, ppl still don’t get it, the fücking wii is not targeted toward adults or grown up kids.

Wii fit is a great concept, and it works! I have mine for a month now, and it’s a nice addition to my exercise-routine. And sure, some exercises are lame or bore quickly. However, there is so much in the package that there is always plenty left. It just amazes me how Nintendo comes up with these great things all the time, and how they make Microsoft and Sony bend-over like the little b*tches they are!

@5, So why not sell yours? You can get big bucks (sold my ’spare’ one with 100 euro profit), even for a dusty Wii. Oh wait, I get it. You’re just making a lame joke, without knowing what you are actually talking about…

Obviously those of you doubting the Wii don’t understand the concept of the machine.

It was made to benefit no lifing gamers with exercise, obviously those people who have the energy to get off the couch and exercise outside and get a proper workout may do so.

In built up areas it’s not easy to do exercise considering the shortage of space and even with gyms around gym memberships can come at a price beyond okay.

If your going to proceed to doubt the Wii you seriously need to pull your head out of your arse.

  24. hmmmmm
    May 19th, 2008 | 11:08

the majority who doubt the Wii are only looking at it from a hardcore game platform POV. I welcome this addition to the Wii console as they are breaking the boundaries of conventional electronic gaming.

The reason the Wii sells so well is its target demographic is children… but it appeals to a newer market of adults and even the elderly.

For those who’ve suffered at the sands of time, and those in built up metropolitan areas this could be a great way to stay active

Ahhh, more relevant ’scene news’ from Martin.

How lomng has the WiiFit been available?? Just pred was it?? Not even just released in most of the world.

You are boring yourself into irrelevance Martin. Stop writing this crap. If tech news is deemed necessary, write about digitaal rights etc – stuff that effects us thieves – we can’t even pirate the Wiifit board!!

Free speech – lets see if this, like other posts of mine, is deleted…

Wii Fit is a cool thing And the kids have fun, too. Lost 2 KG in one Week, not bad. And the Balance Board is going to be used by many games in the Future.
At the release it was sold out in the UK , and it’s a Top-Seller here in Germany.
This time Nintendo made the right decision after the Gamecube disaster.

What? I’ve seen this in like every game store I visit!! Well I’m in Canada, not the US, so I guess that’s why… And the game is supposed to be a lot of fun, but the funny thing is that the game labelled a girl FAT, and she was so devasted and cried to her parents, who said “she is a perfectly healthy, 4ft 9in tall ten-year-old who swims, dances and weighs only six stone. She is solidly built but not fat.”

…So Nintendo apologized to fat kids for labelling them fat. bahahahaha Read about it here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83901

And I want to try it, I’ve been told it’s a lot of fun!

A friend on mine bought one for his wife and gave it on her birthday whcih was on sunday.

i was around and you should have seen her face when he gave it to her. granted she’s built like a brick hippopotamus, but it was like he called her a fat basterd in front of everyone in the room. she put down the Wii Fit turned her attention to the box of chocolates that i’d bought her. how i laughed on the inside.

Only fat people don’t like Wii’s. They don’t like to stand or even move their arms if possible, moving their fingers on their fat XBox controllers is more than enough exercise to make them wheeze with contempt.

“…which arrives on U.S. store shelves on Monday…”
ARGH! Nintendo – or someone, decided to once again push the release date back. Stores have it in backstock as of today, but won’t be putting it on the shelves until Wednesday (5/21). Very frustrating that they’ve been saying up until today that it would be available to buy as of the 19th.
