Nine Inch Nails Uploads New Album on Torrent Sites

Nine Inch Nails has just released the first volume of their new album “Ghosts” on BitTorrent sites as a free download. The band encourages its fans to share the album with friends, post it on websites and play it on podcasts

“Ghosts” is released under a non-commercial Creative Commons license and can be shared freely, something their fans weren’t allowed to do when the band was held back by a record label.

In the release notes the band writes: “Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them.”

This sounds is music to our ears, in more ways than one. For now, only the first volume has been uploaded onto BitTorrent sites, but the entire collection is available for download on the official website for only $5.

“Ghosts I is the first part of the 36 track collection Ghosts I-IV. Undoubtedly you’ll be able to find the complete collection on the same torrent network you found this file”. They further write in the release notes “But if you’re interested in the release, we encourage you to check it out at ghosts.nin.com, where the complete Ghosts I-IV is available directly from us in a variety of DRM-free digital formats, including FLAC lossless, for only $5.”

Trent Reznor, the frontman of Nine Inch Nails has always been a supporter of sharing music via BitTorrent, even when it’s copyrighted. He isn’t frightened of talking about file-sharing. Back in May 2007 he admitted to sharing himself: “I steal music too, I’m not gonna say I don’t” he said. Later that year, when OiNK was pulled offline he admitted that he was a member there ,and said , : “If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn’t the equivalent of that in the retail space right now.”

The new Nine Inch Nails album including artwork is available for download on the official site, as well as on The Pirate Bay and other BitTorrent sites. This is exciting for all us hard-core p2p users. While you’re waiting to try this new album make sure to play Fuck The Mpaa by the Futuristic Sex Robots.

Now is the perfect chance for all of you “wah wah music is too expensive, wah wah DRM” -whiners to prove yourself.

This is 4 CDs of music in LOSSLESS DRM-FREE format for five measly dollars. That’s something like 3,20€ for us europeans.

Buy it even if you don’t like it, just to support the new way of selling music and prove the record execs that this is the route they should be taking. Give people options and they won’t steal.

  20. Jamfa
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:07

@hirmu, don’t tell us what to buy.
I already give money to artists who release their stuff free, just cos someone big got on board does not mean I should give them money. It’s good big acts are willing to do this, but I still would never listen let alone buy this or any other album by him or NIN.
Get out of the mainstream, that in its self is killing the music industry. IMO.

  21. Yeah

    Awesome. NIN rocks

  22. sybull
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:11

Hang on…..they have made all thier money from being with a record label, now they can afford to make music for free.

I wounder how long it will be when they realise that 1000 ($5000) copies were downloaded yet they got paid for 150 copies($750) and not start to feel annoyed.

Donations work for charities, so unless they recognise themselves as a charity, they are going to be dissapointed in the long run.

Or maybe they are using the internet to get their music out there, then make the money on tours….which are now the money spinners.

  23. tymon_
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:15

WOW! I’ve just registered to NIN page and I’m downloading ‘Gost I’. If I like it, I will BUY whole album. It’s only 5$ (great idea Reznor!). I think we SHOULD pay to ARTISTS for their work.

  24. TerMin4T0R
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:24

Why is everyone falling for this?
They are logging your ip’s too see who is getting their album for free then going to come and get their money.

Where is this Fu(k the MPAA song that was mentioned in the main post? I want that song LoL!

  25. QuadrupelQ
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:24

@ sybull: Glad to see somebody who looks beyond the “it’s free” part of this. It’s nice to see a musician do this kind of thing, but it’s hardly going to matter. NIN isn’t exactly one of the greatest bands out there. It’s an aquired taste(and from listening to “Ghosts” I must again say that it’s certainly not mine).

NIN and Radiohead don’t make a dent in the music industries monopoly. As soon as some major “stars” (musicians that are mainstream and hugely popular) are releasing their, THEN we have a breakthrough.

  26. uraloser
    March 4th, 2008 | 14:52

@ the negative (or realistic) people here:
It has to start somewhere. I don’t listen to NIN and wont buy the stuff only because it’s cheap. But I sure hope the people who listens to them support them by paying the $5 on their website. If it doesn’t work for the pioneers, why would the huge mainstream stars even bother to follow? So regardless of NIN motives behind this, if you like the music, go buy it and pave the way for the digital revolution!

    March 4th, 2008 | 15:03

even when something is free you find people complaining.

    just shutup

  28. hirmu
    March 4th, 2008 | 15:17

    @sybull

    They just SOLD OUT the $300 limited edition. That’s $300 x 2500 = $750 000 (minus expenses of course).

But you’re absolutely right about the becoming famous part. NIN wouldn’t be where they are now without record labels pushing their music in the first place.

There are very few artists who have gotten famous without a label’s help, most artists that start out free tend to “sell out” later (Machinae Supremacy, I’m looking at you).

People in here are going on about how they won’t make much by selling the album at $5, you do realise that when artists are on a major record label they receive less than a dollar per album sold. So selling it at $5 for the 4 albums they are in fact making more money this way

  31. seethis
    March 4th, 2008 | 15:30

all the money we save by stealing the music of other musicians, we could give to musicians who upload their work via bittorrent :-D

    March 4th, 2008 | 15:34

yeah i heard its about a pound an album which is then divided by the band. most of the money the band makes comes from touring and merchandise sales.

I’m a huge NIN fan but there are a few other business questions that need to be asked. First, while this is a relatively new trend, it is untested. The RIAA and artists are looking to see what can be accomplished this way. But the album is itself experimental and made in only 10 weeks. While I like it, it is inferior to their albums that have been record label backed. Too many test variables here to draw any conclusions whether it succeeds or fails. Also, NIN has been around since ‘87 and are quite famous… Will this work for new artists?

  46. Smittyel
    March 4th, 2008 | 21:09

I just realized that the limited editions sold out. All 2500 limited editions…each for $300.

Trent has already made $750,000 dollars already. And all without the RIAA. Nice!

You’d be more comfortbale walking into a record shop and buying an unknown band’s album for $30 than you would a band you know? Unknown bands have nothing to lose.

    F*** these millionaires.

Trent Reznor is Hollywood scum. On a major label for years and then the career takes a downturn so suddenly he’s into this new distro method. F*** that.

Radiohead too. It’s easy to say the right things when you’ve got some millions in the bank.

F*** all these greedy ego-maniac pop-star f***s. Go make a video for mtv you wa*kers.

  58. miffed
    March 5th, 2008 | 15:26

Reznor never got the push he deserved from his record label, was screwed over for millions by his management and got where he was today by hard work and interesting music. With regards to him being “hollywood” he’s only ever done music and put together soundtrack albums for stuff that’s on the edge or at least interesting, with the exception of possibly The Fan.

And he’s 20 times better than KMFDM, doin’ it again, LOL! Awful nonsense.

Give the man some Kudos for believing in digital distribution, all you idiot haters are biting the hand that feeds.

    See what I did there?
