First of all, I assume that you’re a Virgin Media user? If not, it’s not going to let you connect. If you are, you may need to put in your Virgin Media name and password. Note that each server differs and you may need to put in your entire email address as the username. Also, verify the port number. Virtually all news servers default to port 119, but I suppose yours could be different. Also, check and see if it need SSL enabled or maybe it won’t work if it IS enabled.

I use newsgroups daily and almost never use Rapidshare. Besides the fact that I hate the way Rapidshare LIES to free users, trying to make them think that all the annoyances they have to put up with are technical limitation rather than company choices, there are several advantages to newsgroups.

Using free search sites, you can search all the groups and generate NZB files for what you want. With Rapidshare you have to hope that someone posts a link to what you want. Although there are some RS search sites, they never seem to be able to find what I search for, even if I KNOW that it’s on there. You can also post requests to a newsgroup and it will be seen by everyone who follows that group (but not by strictly NZB downloaders). If something doesn’t work, you can request help or even ask the uploader directly.

Rapidshare, as well as MegaShares, MegaUpload, etc are file hosting sites. Users can upload files to them, post the URLs and then others can download those files. Uploading and downloading are free, BUT they impose a lot of restrictions to try and annoy users into paying for an account. The following applies to Rapidshare, but others have similar restrictions;

When free users upload, the file is deleted 90 days after the last download (theoretically you could keep it online forever by downloading it again and again). Paid users’ uploads are never deleted (as long as the account is paid). For free downloaders, there is a wait time based on the size of the file of up to 2 minutes. If the download aborts before the file is finished (a common occurance for me), there’s no way to resume the download, you have to start over from scratch. After you download a file, there’s a wait time based on the size of the file before you can download again. For a 100MB file (the largest that RS allows), you have to wait 200 minutes, or 3 hours and 20 minutes. You’re also limited to only one download at a time. Finally, RS recently imposed a 50K/s speed limit for free users.

Frankly, out of the various hosting sites, RS is the worst! Other sites allow larger files, smaller wait times and better speeds. One (I forget which) even allow resuming downloads.

Sometimes. Years ago, before high-speed internet accounts became common, the volume of stuff posted to Usenet was such that it was relatively easy to run a good server. Then people started posting tons of music, movies, etc and the volume of posts shot through the roof. Today, there’s something like 4 Terabytes posted ecah and every day. Some ISPs try to run their own servers and fail miserably. Others outsource to companies like Giganews and therefore provide decent newsgroup access.

Check your ISPs help site to see if they list how to setup Usenet/newsgoups/NNTP. If so, try connecting to it and see how it is. If the ISP runs its own server, you’re likely to see half the files incomplete and the oldest post will probably be less than 24 hours old. If they outsource, you could see posts from months ago and 90% or more will be complete. If they don’t provide good access, you can get a private account.
