NewsMan Pro v2.7.0.7 RETAIL-TE

TE group released retail edition of NewsMan Pro - usenet newsreader and binary grabber.

Description:

Top-rated interface with full support for text AND binary newsgroups. Designed not only to be good-looking, but also to make browsing and downloading from Usenet easy and enjoyable. Comes with eight different Themes and is also designed to work well with third-party skinning programs like StyleXP and Windowblinds.

If you’ve used Agent or Dialog, you’ll feel right at home with Newsman Pro. Read text newsgroups effortlessly and store articles as long as you want in the database for fast search and retrieval. Newsman also fully supports binary newsgroups and decodes Mime, UUE and yEnc encoded messages in a separate background thread to minimize CPU usage. The yEnc decoder used by Newsman is directly from yEnc.org and is extremely fast and well optimized. B-News articles are recognized by Newsman and attached *.bn files are saved ready to decode with your favorite Bommanews decoder. Incomplete articles are also fully supported and it is easy to see messages that have received new segments that can be downloaded and added to already retrieved segments.

NZB files save you time by allowing you to download binaries without retrieving headers. Newsman Pro gives you full support for NZB files by allowing you to import multiple files at once within the program. NZB messages are placed into a separate virtual group. You can also associate NZB files with Newsman Pro and Newsman will import them when you open the files in Windows© Explorer. Newsman Pro can also monitor a directory of your choosing in order to automatically import and process incoming NZB files. Lastly, Newsman supports exporting of headers to an NZB file so you can create your own files to share with others.

Does anyone know if this supports pausing of downloads? I’m a GrabIt user and I hate that it doesn’t have that feature.

BTW, if you’re looking for good, but cheap Usenet, check out http://news.astraweb.com starts at $10/mo, you can’t go wrong.

Yes, the account is given FREE to you for 3 Days with UNLIMITED downloads. ( I’d recommend using AltBinz myself )

So grab as much as you can in that time!!

    BTW

I think that the trial also offers SSL encrypted downloads, should mention it in the email from Hitnews.EU

    Settings

When you’re using a trial account you should use these settings:

    Server Address: free.hitnews.eu
    Port: 119

    SSL

By using SSL the data between your newsreader and our servers is encrypted. Because of the encryption outsiders cannot see that it is usenet traffic. Many providers limit the bandwidth of usenet to make room for other traffic. By using encrypted connections they can no longer distinguish usenet traffic from other traffic. To use SSL you will need a newsreader which supports SSL. Grabit does not. Newsleecher does, Alt.Binz (free) does too.

To use SSL with a trial account use:

    Server Address: free.hitnews.eu
    Port: 563 or 995

AltBinz ( freeware ) but if you ‘donate’ you can use newer builds

Get the installation files here v0.25.0

    http://www.altbinz.net/index.php?page=downloadz

Simply overwrite your existing files with the files found in this folder to upgrade ( without your donation … spend money on more beer!! ) :

    @12 Wordy

My version of Grabit 1.7.1 has a pause button. Alt.binz and Grabit are great if you just want a downloader. I use Xnews for my reader.

    @ Kalis

    Personally I would stick to ‘ 2 Connections ‘

the reason for this is that the connections are similar to the way a Download Manager works.

2 Connections simply means 2 connections to the server - this will not make your download faster by choosing more ‘connections’

For HitNews and most other providers it’s generally ‘ 8 connections ‘ that can be used at any one time.

Premium providers like GigaNews offer 20 connections.

Goodluck and enjoy your downloads !!

    BTW

AltBinz has a good search application

Just click on NEWSLEECH tab and then in the large box just put in what your looking for eg xvid

The usenet has always been my preferred way of getting stuff but the quality of the experience is completely dependant on the quality of your newserver.

My current newserver has a binary retention of 60+ days and will allow download thru it’s http server that means you no longer have to d/l thousands of headers if you don’t have a .nzb.

But it costs about $10 a month which isn’t much for what u get but it’s not free either so those who expect their entire interweb experience to be free won’t enjoy using the usenet.

For the people with a stiff opinion about usenet.

I have a 24 MBit DSL connection. With it, comes a free 20 MBit usenet account.

I know how to look for stuff. For example.

Command & Conquer 3: Kanes Wrath wouldnt be called ‘rld-c3kw’, like the official release, but candycane3.rar.

There are tons of websites that offer almost 0day postings of almost anything. From pda software to mp3 albums.

All you have to know, is where to be, and look.

So usenet, is actually for the people that want their retail dvd rips downloaded within 30 minutes (like me :D )

Besides the fact that I can’t find a list of system requirements anywhere on the web site, I don’t like the idea that NMP uses a separate database program to store downloaded data. Looking through the FAQ and forums, it seems that using the two programs together isn’t exactly trouble-free.

AltBinz looked interesting until it started causing everything else to crash due to the fact that it was using up close to half my system resourses.

    Presently, I use Binary News Reaper 2. It’s unsupported and kind of buggy, but so far it’s the only program I’ve found that has two features I really like;

    1. All the connections to a server are used for downloading individual parts rather than using one connection per file, like GrabIt does.

    2. Each part is decoded and saved to the hard drive as soon as it’s downloaded. Most programs hold everythings in memory until it has all the parts, then it saves it. In the event of a crash or power failure, you lose any incomplete files that hadn’t finished downloading yet.

Almost every ISP out there has a free Usenet server as part of your subscription. Most of them hide the server name deep in their FAQs. Just dig around.

I run NewsMan on MySQL, flawlessly, but then again I’m a network admin. This is **NOT** for novices.

This is so not true. Many programs fill a cache (of a certain size) in RAM memory. Once that’s full the data gets written to disk. Some programmer here should mention how the OS’s do that, when the application programm hands this task over to the operating system? The OS will do the writing in a way that a workable compromise is reached between conflicting necessities like low ressource consumption, low average and maximum latency times, and high data security.

btw I have used Forté Agent years ago for ascii usenet. Now I want something for binary. I have often heard of Newsbin Pro and some other programs I don’t remember.

btw. the size of that RAM memory cache is on desktop systems often in around 50 or 500 kilobyte. Alternatively, data gets flushed to disk when a certain time limit is reached.

On a network the data comes in packets. I assume TCP packets have sizes between a few dozen bytes to a few kilobytes.

You never have a really continious flow on bits to disk. It is always packetized.
