New Vista update sniffs for pirated copies

As it promised, Microsoft Corp. yesterday started sending Windows Vista users an update that identifies illegal copies of the operating system installed with cracks that the company will disable when it distributes Service Pack 1 (SP1) in two weeks. Last Thursday, Microsoft announced the update, which detects two common cracks used to activate pirated copies of Vista, and said it would hit Windows Update (WU) within a week. Users who have left Vista’s recommended WU settings alone will receive the update automatically. Others, said Microsoft, must enable Automatic Update within Vista or manually call up WU from the Start menu.

A document posted to the company’s support site spelled out the details. Among other things, it promised that the 3MB update “does not affect the functionality of your operating system.” That jibes with what Alex Kochis, senior product manager for Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage program, said last week when he announced the update. If the update finds one of the cracks, a notice pops up alerting the user, but it doesn’t disable either crack. The first, dubbed “Grace Timer,” extends Vista’s activation grace period, while the other, “OEM BIOS,” mimics factory-floor activation. Users whose PCs don’t have the cracks will not see the pop-up. Ouch, dark times for all Vista pirates! I’m sure there will be workaround pretty soon though…

Anyone in uk got this update yet, and Mr D when the next OS comes i will get a dodgy version of that too, and i will probably like it better than vista after i get used to it, and some people will probably slate it and say its not as good as vista, coz people dont like change, and coz people is people, and coz some people have crap computers and small winkys and mothers who smell of fish and baked beans, why just becoz, thats why.

They must have seen you coming to pay £2000 for a computer that wont run vista well enough, i put my computer together for about £300 all in! with 4 gb Ram, 6400 dual core, 250gb hard drive, and hd2600 graphis card and it runs vista like a charm, oh its pretty, look at the pretty colours mommy!

bearing in mind that i bought the pc in 2003 after a £1800ish win on the horses it’s not surprising that its not vista ready but the point is why upgrade to vista when its like shooting your pc in the leg.

Also use a “OEM.DVD-BiE” release of vista ultimate (x86), update KB940510 installed yesterday and nothing happened so far…

Anyway if something does happen, i’ll just switch to a another working cracked version =)

So your asking, why buy something better, when your old crap thing still works quite well, do you have any tips for the horses by the way?
and i still think you payed way too much, back then i had a p3 with half a gig of ram, and it ran xp fab, and i only payed £200 for it

I HATED Vista when I had only 1GB of memory and then got off the stupid “Vista Sucks” bandwagon. Vista is getting better everytime and Ive switched to it for my main OS some time ago. Most people I know on the street who hate Vista have a cheesy computer, so obviously they are going to hate it. Get more memory, they are extremely cheap and get a proper videocard.

The reason your Dell copies of Vista still work is because this was a corporate version for Dell to install on their desktop and laptop PCs requiring no activation. This is common for very large corporate customers. If Microsoft disabled the Dell OEM version that many pirates have installed, it would also disable Vista for the thousands of legitimate Dell Vista users worldwide. That would probably be a bigger PR disaster for both Dell and MS than having a few thousand pirate users installing it. Doesn’t mean they wont find some way to identify it in future but I can’t see how they would be able to do it.

and before anyone starts i bought the HP Vectra P3 in 2000, for £200, so by 2003 it was pretty outdated, not that any one would start ,but you never know

No tips im afraid . I quit betting in 2003 after that win and now use my time i bit more wisely. But I still would like to get better value out of the money ive spent than go out a blow cash on a os that will probably last about 2-3 years anyway and get better components that are in the shop now at a fraction of the price in the future. If it aint broke dont fix it

Laws are stupid, ppl get sued and put in jail or fined for stupid reasons.

I remember some teacher got put into jail or fined or something. Because the teacher was teaching a class and was going to show the students a website, then the website started popping up heaps of porno pop-up windows.

Obviously not his/her fault but they still persecuted the teacher under “laws”….

Laws can be stupid most of the time…..

Some of you need to think harder. If MS does this to Vista with the New Updates (Service Pack), what do you think would be in the Service Pack (New Updates) for XP? I hate to say “I told you so.” It’s not only for Vista. They are also trying to “exploit” XP. Trolls no need to respond to this.

But One comment on here hit the point! “Turns off automatic updates”. Now go into services.msc and disable automatic updates and BITS from there also. Then finally you can say, you are sort of safe. ;)

Tools that I would recommend: PREVXCSI, A2, System Protect, Spyware Terminator, Comodo Memory Firewall. I don’t use Comodo Firewall Pro but I recommend it along with Net Limiter and Outpost Free.

    Thanx for your time

i don’t understand those vista haters. they complain about having to spend money on their rig to be able to support the latest os. wake up. that’s technology for you.

microsoft operating systems may require higher system requirements, but at least they have superior compatibility. i’ve tried ubuntu linux (and others) over the years, but even now with the recent release, it still does not fully support my 4 year old and 2 year old laptops.

what’s with all the people claiming they spent loads of money building their rig and that it runs horribly with vista? mine was built last year with low cost in mind and it runs vista fine. it’s also on 24/7 and i have never received any bsods (other than nforce sata driver issues earlier, but nvidia sorted that out).

even my 5 year old laptop was been able to run vista when it still had 1gb ram (fried a 512mb stick while playing with osx86)

conclusion: compatibility. no other operating system can support that many different hardware combinations. so stop complaining, especially if you get it for free

Funny thing is that if Microsoft monitors this site then any solutions found could just be used as a guide to strengthen the problem. So the more details of future changes we imply to make the harder it will be. Maybe the best option is just to have a PC which is always offline so it can’t be messed with and another to browse, play online multiplayer games etc…

Ive been warning people about this for ages saying what if Microsoft found out your version was cracked and reminding them how much they would be screwed. I would never buy vista or download a cracked version. I’ll stick with the preinstalled XP. Vista is for snobby rich kids who like to show off by showing a silly logo and aren’t concerned with value for money. If they bought out a vista+ edition they would be right on it like flies on excrement without a single thought to how it would effect there system. When my bro started his vista system up I had to say it looked good and all the usual crap but really i was just thinking woopy f###ing doo. It’s just like a tube of toothpaste. They change the name alter it ever so slightly maybe set the default settings to a higher resolution, increased brightness, colour and contrast which could be done with xp anyway then repackage it and then we are about £200 poorer. Until people are screaming at me about great new features and advantages I’ll give Vista a miss. XP Rules

Why should i pay out more money when i already paid £2000 for my pc just for my money to end up in some fat cats christmas bonus . I say f### that . If you’ve got more money than sense then by all means buy the vista that causes more problems than solves.’

What problems does Vista cause, Hawking? I have yet to find any and I,ve been running it for 8 months and it’s on the same system I ran XP on for over 3 years with no hardware updates.

Your obviously an idiot to pay $2000 dollars for a computer with obsolete hardware or is it that you just think you know about computers but really know diddly squat about anything. Stick to your fantasy world, Master of the Universe, untill you know what you are talking about.

@164 There’s a lawsuit against MS going on right now about the misleading “Vista Ready” stickers. You may be able to get a few bucks back. Google “vista ready lawsuit” for more info. :D

And Vista has been rock solid stable for me. It uses %4 more memory than XP did on my rig. Disable the services you dont need to lessen memory usage. The polished look and prefetching capability are my main reasons. Programs actually open quicker than they did on XP. I run 2 EVGA 8800GTX’s in SLI but haven’t noticed any degradation while gaming. Some games actually had a higher FPS rate while others a tad lower, depending it they were DX10 capable or not.

Vista is great cause I had to install xp over and overagain cause it starts crashing when you keep your computer on 24/7. I had to install like once or twice in two months. I had vista over year, and no slowing down. I tryed couple of games both with vista and xp. in cs:s stress test i had 20fps better avarage framerate. 3dmark 06 gave me 300 points more on vista. And I got working many other games that didn’t work on xp, some old games.

has anyone else noticed that windows comes out in cycles? 95 and 98 were practically identical, except for more hardware support and various OS tweaks, but the same underlying OS. I have no idea what ME was, but man, it still makes me sick. Then we got the NT based OS’s, 2000 and XP (yes i know about WinNT). Windows 2000 was a GREAT OS. I used it all the way until XP hit SP2, just because XP did have problems that needed to be addressed. Install XP with no serivce packs, youll see ;) . I think Vista is the beginning of the next cycle. The only bad thing about the cycles is.. when the first OS of the new cycle comes out, its competing against Second (and historically better) OS of the previous cycle. Of course people are gonna hate it, but eventually it will be usable. I think the main problem with vista is its age. All my hardware from 2 years ago (which can run vista) came with XP drivers, but not all of it did get updated with vista drivers; and on a side note, drivers between 2k and XP were interchangeable, vista has a whole new driver structure, which sucks, but eventually it will be ok, once all the XP-Only hardware has been replaced. Ive been trying vista since RC1 and got a legit copy though MSDN, but i still use XP. I will say it has gotten alot better each time i try it, but come to think of it, each time ive tried it, ive upgraded some peice of hardware on my PC. Its a vicious cycle!

Over hundred words for a stupid opinion and whats it got to do with SP1 anyway? If you dont like it and dont intend to use it whats the point in spouting off about it?

I’m using SP1 RTM and not had any problems (yet)

Even if you have invested all your money in the highest-end laptop on the market, XP would still be your best bet.

Why? Because Vista sucks battery life. It was reported that for the same laptop, same default setting and same usage you could get almost 20% increase battery life for XP.
So, if you are a laptop owner and you value your extra battery time more than the “nice” looks, stay with XP. I did.

Angelt, I read the nfo of the Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Ultimate.OEM.32Bit.June.2007-ETH0 release and it says that group NoPE let them use their Vista source. So pretty much you have a NoPe/ETH0 release. It is most likely the dell oem version. I have a NoPe version installed in mine, so pretty much we have the same vista source. Good to know, because ETH0 comes out with great releases and it shows me that noPe release is good too.

“2 EVGA 8800GTX’s in SLI but haven’t noticed any degradation”

Well duh. That’s like arguing that your Lambo still has decent pick up even with the air conditioning on. But some of us would find sli 8800’s a bit overkill and poor economics. We all have priorities and you can spend money on whatever you want, don’t get me wrong.

want vista capability without vista headaches?

    black xp 8.1 dreampack
go look on btjunkie… 10gb download 3 dvd’s (different uses on each only really need the fullinstall dvd)

you get not only a phenomenal install of xp, but it looks like vista, runs vista software, has dx10.1 in it, has every utility u can want DURING install plus an additional folder on the dvd that has tons more utilities and the cracks/keys included.

thats the way to gou people.

and when ur done, go visit my site *grins*

There’s only 2 things I need Vista right now:

3dmark 07 and Alan Wake are Direct X 10 exclusive

    Otherwise I’ll just use xp

So what should we do now. I mean they will probably force us to download SP1 when it comes out so we are screwed….

i run a very complex time coded cd setup on my 1.7 pentium m735 with 2gb of ram, and ive run both xp and vista ultimate, and to my surprise (and believe me i was after all the web talk) the vista handles it much smoother. with all asio soundcard settings the same, the timecode is just far more exact and accurate with vista, dont ask me why. my number 1 complaint with vista is that file transfers take for ever, but other than that ive had no problems what so ever. people got to remember with crap osx, which no one really uses, being so popular windows was forced to make the opperating system more noob friendly and pretty. i say osx is crap because even if it is superior in performance you cant run a tenth of the programs or do anything that mac doesnt want you to do on it, so you have no choice. i dont believe for a minute that vista is more powerful than xp, but with the new intel processors coming out and ram being so cheap who cares? if you like xp keep it, but id rather my computer illeterate mother running vista.

According to a news report, kb940510 after detecting those cracks will display a pop-up after 15 days; giving plenty of time for pirates to post on forums that nothing happens after updating thereby tricking more people to install.

Perhaps someone who has installed the update will volunteer to set his computer’s system date ahead 15 days and post the results here. As always backup all your files first. LOL

    Finished.I did the following procedure:
    1)Fresh install in C
2)Update normally from net of windows apart from drivers of vga+audigy
3)Then a recheck on windows update and downloaded kb940510 but before i restart pc i searched for the wgaer_m it found a file which i deleted *according to some guys words:After installing this upgrade and before restarting the computer, search for files named “wgaer_m”. You will find two files. Delete them and reboot. You will be “upgraded” and everythig will be working as usual.
    4) The rebooted and my curiosity prevailed and installed also sp1 with no problems yet.Ofc i stopped updates as i always do once i install the majority of the in a new format.
8 hours after i finished the format and severals reboots everything is going ;) well all we have to do is w8 those 15 days to see what will happen.
I hope this works and be useful to others too…

I have installed the MSDN vista sp1 image (x86) and have used a successful activation hack/crack. It downloaded the evil KB and everything was still genuine. When I get home, I will test the 15 days thing.

I got past vista activation. Downloaded vista sp1 integraded torrent (search google for it). Before installing change your bios time and date to the year 2099. Then boot from dvd. Install. When finished wait for desktop to be prepaired. After first login my system shut down automaticaly. Before boot i went into bios , changed date back to 2008. Then after login rightclicked computer, properties. And Whala Windows is activated.
