New Vista update sniffs for pirated copies

As it promised, Microsoft Corp. yesterday started sending Windows Vista users an update that identifies illegal copies of the operating system installed with cracks that the company will disable when it distributes Service Pack 1 (SP1) in two weeks. Last Thursday, Microsoft announced the update, which detects two common cracks used to activate pirated copies of Vista, and said it would hit Windows Update (WU) within a week. Users who have left Vista’s recommended WU settings alone will receive the update automatically. Others, said Microsoft, must enable Automatic Update within Vista or manually call up WU from the Start menu.

A document posted to the company’s support site spelled out the details. Among other things, it promised that the 3MB update “does not affect the functionality of your operating system.” That jibes with what Alex Kochis, senior product manager for Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage program, said last week when he announced the update. If the update finds one of the cracks, a notice pops up alerting the user, but it doesn’t disable either crack. The first, dubbed “Grace Timer,” extends Vista’s activation grace period, while the other, “OEM BIOS,” mimics factory-floor activation. Users whose PCs don’t have the cracks will not see the pop-up. Ouch, dark times for all Vista pirates! I’m sure there will be workaround pretty soon though…

The workaround is don’t be dumb enough to have Windows Update set to Auto in the first place and then don’t manually install it when it appears in your update list, just set it to be hidden so it doesn’t appear any more.

Or you fools could do this rather obscure Windows XP Pro reg hack. Copy the following reg lines, save them as whatever name you want.reg. So XPLegit.reg

ANY version of XP Pro, SP0-2, will work. No more sutpid WGA cracks and hacks. This works and MS will never stop it because it is so obscure. SP3 is around the corner, and they have never mentioned anything about this.

    And, you’re ALL welcome!

I use the Dell copy of Vista Ultimate that has been floating around for a year now. Installed the SP1 that #6 is talking about a few weeks ago and just checked, I got update KB940510 yesterday afternoon and my Vista is still activated “genuine”. No problems here. :)

i saw this update on my sp1-rtm vista windows update page… so i simply used the “hide update” option so it wont pop-up in the system tray saying that there is new update all the time, look like everything is still working as it supposed to. but you never know if it’s gonna last forever until MS will release sp1 for the general public.

I remember when XP first came out and it was just as hated as Vista. Personally, I don’t get into whiny fanboy flame wars about which OS is better. And that’s all it is. Vista has never give me any problems at all with any game or software that I use. As long as you have a decent box it works just fine. I won’t touch XP Pro again after switching.

Why doesn’t someone just completely remove all the anti-piracy measures in Windows? I mean all the crap like WGA, activation and validation… and then remove the code that physically ties the software with the hardware, so Windows can be used on USB, eSATA,1394, CD/DVD, just as simple as Linux? And don’t forget to replace them Microsoft certificates that time out, while your at it! I bet most of you didn’t know about that, did you?

Look in your certificate manager under trusted authorities. Then ask yourself when did you give permission for all these certificate that allow of deny your software, connections and even SSL websites. This just means, Microsoft made the choices for you, without your consent.

It only takes one version, and everyone can bypass all this crap for good. And while we at this, make this open source code, so everyone can improve it! Yeah!

I game (Crysis, Steam games, Company of Heroes, Universe at War, etc) with my vista and I have no problems whatsoever. It’s hard to use XP after using Vista for awhile now. I have a legit version of Vista Ultimate so I am not worried about this update. I will admit that when Vista first came out it was garbage but they have made a lot of improvements since then so there isn’t any real reasons to bash it anymore.

Vista doesn’t have problems? Lucky you. For the rest of us, Vista sucks. The biggest case in point is that the file deletion dialog can stay up seemingly FOREVER, even after the file has actually been deleted, at “0%” done.

Secondly, the 64-bit version is only available in the expensive “Ultimate” edition. Not a big deal if you pirate, but it definitely hampers adaptation of 64-bit technology.

There are some things I like about Vista–it’s Explorer is much superior to XP’s, for example–but I’ll stick to Linux, and XP Pro 64-bit when I rarely need it :)

Just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s better. Vista insists “making it easier on the user” and it just makes things worse. So many people “downgraded” from Vista back to XP cause it was just bad and annoying. If it weren’t for preinstalled copies on new computers Vista would have been an even bigger flop. Wish there was a way to find out how many people installed XP over it. Microsoft needs to learn to respect it’s users.

P.S. I don’t hate new OS just cause it’s new. Being using XP since day 1 and I had no complaints.

I’ve been using vista for one year, I dont have any complaints. One of the programs it has is Windows DVD Maker.
You can burn a dvd from almost any video format xvid, divx, any mpeg. Xp doesn’t come with DVD Maker,Dreamscene = video as walpaper. And a couple of more goodies that i wont mention.

People you have to get use to Vista, is here, and is going to stay. Why so much hassle and critics. We all used XP and like it. But now there’s a new chick in town, is called Vista. And like everything new, is just new, it looks better, it has more interesting things and it’s younger.

“Vista doesn’t have problems? Lucky you. For the rest of us, Vista sucks. The biggest case in point is that the file deletion dialog can stay up seemingly FOREVER, even after the file has actually been deleted, at “0%” done.”

This was fixed in one of the first major updates. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979

“Secondly, the 64-bit version is only available in the expensive “Ultimate” edition. Not a big deal if you pirate, but it definitely hampers adaptation of 64-bit technology.”

Wrong. 64-bit is available in the same editions as 32-bit. I recommend 64-bit Business. And it does not in any way “hamper the adaptation of 64-bit technology”, Vista having the best compatibility of any other 64-bit Windows OS is a huge step towards making 64-bit mainstream

There are some things I like about Vista–it’s Explorer is much superior to XP’s, for example–but I’ll stick to Linux, and XP Pro 64-bit when I rarely need it”

How could you possibly be complain about Vista’s “problems” when you are using XP 64-bit? Neither I nor most other pc users would touch XP 64-bit with a ten foot pole if given the choice between it and Vista 64-bit due to terrible compatibility issues. Linux is all well and good, stick with that… Unless of course you happen to want play mainstream games :P

so it doesnt disable the crack, just sends you a pop up telling you you have a cracked version? really whats the point, Microsoft went through that trouble to tell us something we already knew? thanks for spending millions of dollars to point out the obvious.

You probally have to reinstall a couple of drivers after installing it. You will know.

This is important because if you let Microsoft automatically install the other SP1 version, you probally would get the pop up alerting you of the crack.

Lmao. I’m glad I’m still running the copy of xp which came with my computer. Vista is total crap!!!. Who want an os that slows a computer down by 20% and now to be polite messes with cracks. Hey at least i can sell my spare windows xp os disc which cost over £100 to my bro with crappy vista. I’m guessing Linux is gonna be get pretty popular. LOL !!!!

angelit . if your vista was running faster then it must be to do with all the programs you were running on it. If you lokk on the back of any new game case you will see that vista users are required to have higher ram and processor speed.

    Charlie:

You have to have windows update set for auto. My PC automatically installed it yesterday. Update for Windows Vista (KB940510)

    Installation date: ‎2/‎27/‎2008 7:36 PM

    Installation status: Successful

    Update type: Important

Install this update to enable Windows Vista to detect software that bypasses product activation and interferes with normal Windows operation.

keep in mind that microsoft has the ability to force these updates, even if you have the update service disabled (service using services.msc)

Google “microsoft stealth update” to learn about it.

    February 28th, 2008 | 22:10

nope still wont detect it, ive been using vista for a while now with no problems, and i used xp for 3 or 4 years or more, and i wouldnt ever go back.

haha all the vista haters out there, buy a decent pc and you wont have any problems with vista FACT. my pc is multi boot with vista ultimate 64bit and xp home… vista works perfectly fine for all my video editing and music production, and it works great with all my external hardware, my laptop runs vista ultimate too, not a single problem lol

vista requires bigger better pc’s compared to xp, not that much of a big difference but still, xp required more powerfull pc’s when it was introduced and everyone said about xp then, what people are saying about vista now lol

Hawking – Master Of The Universe:

It doesn’t matter what it has, if it has more ram and more processor speed. What’s important is that is faster period.

Vista with SP1 it’s just great. Try it, you’ll never go back to XP. Of course I have A Dell XPS 410,Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66 ghz, 4gb of Ram.

Why thank you Mr D, and your right, i may be a noob and i know less than nothing about computers, but in my opinion Vista is fine and dandy and oh so perdy too, it has this button that makes everything scroll funny, and this glass effect, and the icons look lovely, and i can have a moving screen saver, oh and did i say it looks nice too.

lol @ vista lowers. All I do is text editing, surfing the net & email. Now Vista comes out and all of the sudden my box is crap because it cannot handle all that useless sh!t that comes with Vista? *claps for brainwashed morons by M$* …they succeeded @ selling crap once again.

If vista is so great . how does it differ to xp cos all i see is a load of costly hardware updates needed. Why should i pay out more money when i already paid £2000 for my pc just for my money to end up in some fat cats christmas bonus . I say f### that . If you’ve got more money than sense then by all means buy the vista that causes more problems than solves.
