New version of Nintendo DS at E3

A new version of Nintendo’s blockbuster DS handheld could well be revealed at this year’s annual Electronic Entertainment Expo. According to video game company Enterbrain, a new DS model may be on the way with added functionality, but it is unclear if it would be an official successor to the Nintendo platform. Bloomberg Japan reports that the head of Enterbrain, Hirokazu Hamamura has predicted that the new DS model will be revealed during E3, the world’s biggest video game trade show.

The prediction is in step with a statement Nintendo made earlier this year.  “All I can tell you is what we announce during E3 is gonna be fantastic,” said company VP Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview with MTV’s GameTrailers. The DS first launched in the US in November 2004, so it is about time for a new model.  A refreshed version of the system, the DS Lite, came out in 2006 and effectively phased out the original model.  However, there is no difference in functionality with the Lite. According to Hamamura, the new DS will likely include the ability to play back music and movies, and also an additional slot for external hardware components.

Stick with the old DS lite until they come out with an R4+ edition. R4 allows you to play music and films already on the DS

No you need to purchase a third party hardware to do it.

Yeah, a new model is REALLY needed after just 2years since the last one.

The original GB went 11years before a major upgrade (9yrs if you count the GBC) to the GBA.

pedr0, no public wadtool yet though, so the VC stuff is unusable for most for now.

Obviously the DS can’t playback music or video out of the box – where exactly would you store it? it has no memory card slots as it is a videogame machine, not a media-machine (that has a few games) like the psp.

I remember them saying a few years ago, around the time when the DS was first released, Nintendo had stated that the DS was not their successor to the Gameboy line. Perhaps this E3 revelation will be about that.

So maybe we’ll see an entirely new system.
(If they do release a new handheld, I really hope that it’s powerful yet not gaudy. I mean, we have the technology. Flash memory just keeps getting bigger and cheaper. Solid state drives are more apparent. Multi-touch screens, codecs, compression, etc. The only thing I haven’t really seen much improvement in, on the consumer side of technology, is advancement in battery life. Sure, some handhelds have pretty nice battery life, but if you do anything extensive, or tend to skip around your movies or music like I do, your battery will drain pretty fast.)

The DS Lite is still selling like cut bread everywhere, so sounds a little odd to me… kill the good sellings with an new modell, already ?

But anyway – Japan will be first and maybe a half year later US and Europe will get it. ( Means a looooooot time will pass until its really out )

    From Nintendo-ds.dcemu.co.uk http://nintendo-ds.dcemu.co.uk/nintendo-rubbishes-new-ds-claims-104985.html

Nintendo has told Eurogamer that claims a new DS model will be unveiled at E3 this year are “purely rumour and speculation”.

Word spread after Enterbrain boss Hirokazu Hamamura said he thought there was a “possibility” of Nintendo producing a fresh iteration of the handheld at the event. Enterbrain publishes Famitsu magazine.

Would be nice, and as a note there was 2 major features of the lite that made you want one. Smaller and brighter screen, It finally fit in any pocket! Well un like its rival who still can’t :)

The DS is a million times superior to the failing PSP. I’m excited to see the new functions, hopefully a built in web browser to go with the sexy long range BT action.

BTW if you want proof a PSP is useless, just try and play it for awhile. You will be bored in under 20 min guaranteed because almost EVERY PSP game is a rehash of an old boring PSX game. The few new games coming out for it can be downloaded and emulated. The same can not be said for the DS, it’s got 100’s of original and fun games, and they can’t be ported to another system well because of the lack of touch screens available to people. Even with a tablet the DS emu’s I’ve used are sub par compared to the handheld.

    @27

I use my PSP all the time, just played God of War for 3 hours straight (and beat it). I also like to play Socom, Ratchet and Clank, FFVII (original and new one), Metal Gear Solid, Wild Arms , Lumines, Wipeout, GTA, and more …

P.S. I can play Pokemon Diamond at full speed on my computer. I think the mouse works extremely well (better?) and the mic too.

I use my DS mainly as a an organizer and media device with my CycloDS, so while I am interested in what they are going to do, I am perfectly happy with my current DS. Even ‘If’ they announce a completely new model I hope it will have better wifi connectivity and I will wait for a flash cart as well as a good home brewed web browser, a good home brewed C++ compiler, or a good home brewed VOIP client (not to mention what I have on my DS now).

#28’s argument was lost as soon as he said the game lasted 3 hours. No value there sorry. I’ve paid 15 bucks for Brain Age 1&2, Flash Focus, Point Blank DS, the remake of the original FF3, Castlevania: PoR the list just goes on and on. All were incredibly cheap and all gave me many many hours of game play. The ones that aren’t as cheap like Advance Wars are still fun, and still only cost 30 bucks.

It’s all about bang for your buck

Whilst I prefer the games on the ds to the psp, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 3hr game, especially a game for a handheld system.

I don’t wanna play some silly epic everytime I play a game (and certainly not whilst outdoors). I just want pick up and fun games. Which is what the DS excels at. The PSP does have some of that type of game too, but unfortunately not enough (but it barely has ANY games).

Well, it looks like this is not a reality… :( :( :( lol

Although, I’ll list off what they did say at e3 :) (Not much for the DS, but you’ll be happy!!)

Nintendo unveiled two new peripherals on Tuesday. The first is a microphone for the Wii called Wii Speak, which will be available as an option for a new version of Animal Crossing, a sort of virtual zookeeper, this holiday season. The second is an attachment for the Wii controller that is meant to make it even more sensitive to being physically twisted and turned than it already is. Called the Wii Motion Plus, the unit will be packaged with a new compilation called Wii Sports Resort, which includes mini-games such as sword fighting and throwing a Frisbee-like disc.

In terms of third-party games, the surprise announcement from Nintendo was that Take-Two’s Rockstar studio is creating a version of the Grand Theft Auto series for the DS called Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. It is unclear whether that game will be aiming for an M for Mature rating (roughly equivalent to R for movies) or T for Teen (akin to PG or PG-13).

To finish, Nintendo’s star designer Shigeru Miyamoto showed off Wii Music, which will allow players to mimic playing any of about 50 instruments.

“I hope everyone came away with the understanding that we are continuing to drive innovation to appeal to the mass audience in addition to the core,” Reginald Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s president and chief operating officer, said in an interview Tuesday. “Our focus is on having the breadth to drive enjoyment for the consumer.”

I’m telling you, I can’t WAIT for GTA CT man!! I’m hoping it won’t be sky view, like the original GTA and the second one, but hey, it’s a start!! :D
