New TV Tuner for PlayStation 3

Sony extended the functionality of both the PS3 and PSP at Germany’s Games Convention on Wednesday including a personal video recorder for PS3 and a satellite navigation accessory and messaging service for PSP. In an effort to further lure in customers, Sony will sell a separate device in Europe that allows user to record live television to the PS3 and wirelessly transfer videos to PSP starting in early 2008. The device, called PlayTV, is said to help boost sales of both the PS3 and PSP and was rumored earlier this month. When asked if PlayTV would be coming to North America, a Sony representative said, “We have no announcements at this time regarding DVR/PVR capabilities for PS3 in North America.”

In addition to PVR functionality, Sony also announced Go Explore, a satellite navigation device, and Go Messenger, a voice, video, and chat service, for PSP. Go Explore will support GPS and retail for a ,100 and ,150 (US$135-$200). Go Messenger will be made possible via a firmware update supporting VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol). Both services will be available starting in Europe in early 2008.

My Media Center with dual tuners connected to both my XBOX 360’s in other rooms does everything + more than what this S0ny add on claims.

Sony should lower the price for its units and give this add-on for free or at a huge discount.

Another non-gaming use for the PS3.

Calling it a “gaming console” at this point would be just wrong. Look at the 360 and Wii, games is what sells.

    Bye bye Sony.

Game consoles are evolving. Only the Wii currently is the one that really upholds the “traditional” meaning to game console.

Where as 360 and PS3 have really turned into “Home Entertainment Center” now.

Any why are people complaining about games commin out slowly?
For example, Wii and 360 may have 400 games, but do you buy and play every single of the 400 games? in reality you really only play like 30% of them.

They already decreased the price for their console. I dont see the point of why people are whining about price. I remember 3 yrs ago when PS2 game out people were willing to pay $800 for it. I guess people get more stingy over time >.>

In another 3 yrs time, when a new console comes out, i bet people are gonna say “decrease the prices !!!! give me it for free!!! cuz im too stingy now!!!”

Just great, people who want to watch TV on the PS3 accounts for about 3% of gamers or something no doubt!

Well done Sony- you got your priorities dead on again!
