New server installed

Hey everyone, after 2 days of various attempts to tweak our server setup there wasn’t anything else that could help the situation than adding extra hardware. Therefore, I finished installing a brand new server, which should make RLSLOG finally faster for everyone. The speed of our site was lately quite slow and there were also numerous downtimes – all of this should be history now.

For hardware geeks, I add details of new server:

  • Quad Core Xeon X3320, 2.5GHz, 2×3MB, 1333FSB
  • 4 GB RAM, 667 MHz
  • 500 GB SATA HDD

Let’s hope everything will be much more smooth now. In case some problems appear, please post them in comments and I will look into them. Have fun!

thought the problems were fixed guys? lol

the page has been down for like 4 hours AGAIN

throw out the 'new' ancient hardware and spend some of that ad revenue on some CURRENT hardware

the stuff you listed as new didnt cost you more than $300, i bet you make that in a day easy just off ads

Too little, too late. Due to all the downtime I went to THE competition and I liked it! No downtime, no annoying and less adds, and some nice releases you never find here (UK comedies mostly). I now go for 0 seconds!

Well you have a good processor there but only one of them?
Get yourself some nice VMware and beef that baby up with more processors and ram . The demand will only grow on your site,Especially if Pirates goes away. Otherwise you are doing an excellent job here providing content info . Its always a big help.

In reply to #24, #26, and other related comments, RLSLog does have caching and is running quite a nice setup. The hardware is easily enough to handle rlslog's traffic, even if it increases by thousands. Expanding further would be quite a bad move really.

The downtimes were annoying, for sure, and hopefully that's in the past.

What really annoyed me, were not the paid advertisements where you had to click skip that ad (although it is annoying, but I can see helps you guys pay for things), but the jokeroo ads where you basically had to reload the website to get it back after closing firefox down because it wouldn't let you go back, and the porn related ads that again would keep spamming your screen with with that message asking if it was ok to navigate and leave that page when hitting back. I am assuming those were hijacks of the website. Hopefully those last two are gone, I'd hate to have to boycott this site. :(

Still slow and keep getting "connection resets". Am I not supposed to use Firefox? Waiting for pages to load when clicking on "next page".

  19. common sense
    August 12th, 2009 | 14:52

Still need tweaking as I am still getting timed out messages some times when I try to connect, or blank pages and I have to refresh two or three times, as well as me being told I cannot connect as it cant find you. This happens about 20% of the time. And it seems to take longer for the pages to load.

Now my internet connection is a fat pipe with 8 to 15mbps down and 3 to 4mbps up. And starting next year it will increase to 50 to 70mbps down and 20 to 30mbps up for another $80. a month on my cable bill. Not a bad price for being able to download a complete 8GB dvd in less then 2 minutes or a full cd in 25 sec. And I am using Firefox 3.0.13 with all the latest updates.

Good news to hear about the new server. I left a note to one of the newer posts with the same name. Please disregard it. The site runs fine now.

At prats like JCinSpain: you obviously have never heard of the term "bottleneck". Are you one of those strange people who believe that upgrading from megabit to gigabit (or wireless-B to wireless-G or N) on your LAN gives "faster internet"? Because that's the sort of idiot you sound like when you talk about having such a fast connection but seeing slow pages. BOTTLENECK. Not every server in the world is on such a fast connection and therefore I doubt if you're getting full speed on even a fraction of them (if you even have "20MB", because that equates to 2.5Mbps – get your terminology right, MB != Mb).

At all the prats who are moaning about the mid-range hardware and 'pathetic' upgrade: how much did you donate to the upgrade? Don't whine, then. My current box pretty much outshines rlslog's new server (hell, I bought 4x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1, they're cheap nowadays) but for a server, raw power isn't as important. It's not like they're video editing or 3D gaming on it. Extra cores and more memory will help when indexing databases, but it's all about the pipes in and out.

At all the complaints of ads etc: FF/NoScript/AdBlock, I agree with the earlier poster. I see no ads here. And finally, as for the tracking of torrents, pay no heed to rlslog's advert for a new tracker site – use Bit Che! Best tracking tool around, indexes dozens of the most major torrent trackers, and runs locally – which means you can continue to use it regardless of whether rlslog is online or not. The only thing it's missing is a news feed for new releases (it's merely a search tool, after all) but that's why I come here. Keep up the nice work, guys!

If any mods/admins are reading this, please be aware that the issue in my post above (and other peoples') relates to a wordpress exploit. I Googled and got this:

    http://tech.sweetnam.eu/2009/06/firestats-wordpress-exploit/

Better be safe than sorry. Hope it doesn't affect us end-users! It appears that the extra link is no longer there so I dunno if you guys have fixed it or not.

    Nice work, Martin!

I'm surprised you don't have dual drives in a RAID 1 mirror, since we all know that it's not a question if your hard drive will fail, but _when_. When that happens, it'll suck.

When I build servers, I usually add a third drive to store nightly backups to (I typically store 1 per day for a full week, thus this drive is often larger than the main server drives), as well (no RAID on this one, since it's just backups). That way, if something needs to be restored, you have a week or so of backups on hand to do so.

    Just something to consider. :)

    August 12th, 2009 | 21:14

Martin, there is one small glitch that could be fixed… if I want to search from a category like Windows it always defaults to root, meaning the results will also contain shows, movie and so on. If that form could get as action the category address instead of just the root address that would solve it.

I made a mirror page of the first page of rlslog.net while this server has its tuning phase of the new server.

    August 13th, 2009 | 22:55

Stop with the "quit complaining if you didnt donate money" crap. I cant even begin to count the number of time people have offered RLSLOG parts and cash and they refused because if they accepted then they could get into SERIOUS trouble as they would be looked at as selling these posts instead of just linking to them as they do now.

And for the little kiddies who are trying to claim their machines are better then others, try this one then dweebs

FOUR Quad 4 3.0 cpu's with minimum 800mhz front side bus
    SIX Lite On 20X dvd-rw's
TWO Promise Cards with battery back up and the ability to add 120 hard drives PER CARD
    TWENTY 1.5 TB hard drives
Creative Labs 70sb055a00000 X-fi Elite Pro 7.5 DTS Surround Sound card.
    Running Windows Server 2008 OS
Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 Video card
Six GB of Patriot Signature PC-2700 DDR memory
    36 in LCD Optiquest Monitor
All hooked to a Bose 7.1 Surround Sound system and backed up to a Sony 60in Widescreen HDTV so I can play my games on a 60 in screen, or watch my movies on same.

Now the children who are bragging about their computers, when you can top this, THEN AND ONLY THEN can you have something to brag about. martin is doing the best he can so STFU and leave him alone.
