Releaselog

New server installed

Hey everyone, after 2 days of various attempts to tweak our server setup there wasn’t anything else that could help the situation than adding extra hardware. Therefore, I finished installing a brand new server, which should make RLSLOG finally faster for everyone. The speed of our site was lately quite slow and there were also numerous downtimes – all of this should be history now.

For hardware geeks, I add details of new server:

  • Quad Core Xeon X3320, 2.5GHz, 2×3MB, 1333FSB
  • 4 GB RAM, 667 MHz
  • 500 GB SATA HDD

Let’s hope everything will be much more smooth now. In case some problems appear, please post them in comments and I will look into them. Have fun!

All other sites similar to this one, are far inferior to this one, except when it comes to downtime. If those problems truly are a thing of the past, this will be my Home page.

I dont know much about webservers but would having a very high performing CPU help speed things up, say for example that quadcore vs a dualcore 2.5Ghz.. I wonder whats the peak CPU usage for release log.

    August 11th, 2009 | 23:56

Thanks Martin, hope this will solve everything. The site is after three years still okay but I have to say: I'd love to see some better and smarter authors with a little higher level and some serious info.

    August 12th, 2009 | 00:07

congrats on the upgrade, really hope it helps smooth things out around here and cuts back on the downtime. but judging by the new parts, the old server must have been a dinosaur because those parts you listed are average desktop components at best. i dont know how much traffic rlslog gets but if thats all it takes to handle the traffic then you guys are lucky

    August 12th, 2009 | 00:08

The new site seems to be running great. Rlslog used to crash a lot. Probably because of all the traffic — which just goes to prove how popular you guys are. I'm hooked, keep it up.

    Ciao,

Anyone who says it's slow now must need a hardware upgrade themselves.

  46. Brutos
    August 12th, 2009 | 00:26

Since this is a Wordpress Installation, did you guys do the obvious PHP tweaks, like installing a bytecode cache. Like APC anda dding a forward proxy to Apache because apache is rather slow on its own. Adding a Ngix to spoon feed Apache does real wonders, requests per second that the blog can handle could have a nice factor before them. I guess you did the real obvious stuff as adding a wordpress cache plugin already.

    August 12th, 2009 | 00:27

The update does not seem to have made any differance here in the UK.

All the issues I have experienced with Rlslog recently are still there. Pages loading very slowly, sometimes needing 3 or 4 refreshes to bring up the page.

If things improve over the next few days I will update this thread but for now, as mentioned above, things are just as bad has they have been.

  49. User

  50. sdfgdfg
    August 12th, 2009 | 00:29

    Still slow as a dog…

As if you cannot afford to get this server hosted on a cloud based system… would never have downtime and resources could be upped quite a lot. Those server specs are pathetic given the number of visitors…

  51. Em
    August 12th, 2009 | 00:30

    Finally!

BTW? No RAID? 1 can practically double the reading speed.
I hope that X3320 is worth its money!

    August 12th, 2009 | 00:32

I was wondering if 500Gb would be enough also. Though you are providing links to downloads rather than the downloads themselves. So 500Gb should be plenty.

Thank you for all your hardwork guys :)

  58. sysadmin
    August 12th, 2009 | 00:36

    martin,

i'm a sysadmin for a fortune 500, what you need is also make sure you are connected on a fast port, in order to support all incoming simultaneous connections and send fast replies. it's not computing power that you need.

you can ask for 100mps port but the best would be to ask for 1000MPS port. should be 10 bux more or something, hosts usually give it free

it WILL make a HUGE difference!!!

  59. Venomhed
    August 12th, 2009 | 00:37

Still sluggish to me with each page taking 10-30 seconds to load. I don't think your problem was the hardware, sounds like the actual website is having problems or the speed of the host, but I wouldn't know as I am not on your end.

You aren't running eBay so your specs are fine if not overkill for this website. I would look elsewhere for the problem.

guys does it not occur to you that it just may be that you have a crap internet connection or may be dling something at the time which is slowing it down? Because i live in the UK and it's loading in less than a second. i'm on a 20MB line and RLSLOG is loading much faster than before, kudos to you guys for all your hard work :)

Great work guys no issues…. yet.

    I have a question though.
Running Firefox I occasionally get a pop up saying " do you want to move from this site" then it takes me to some chinese sex museum.
Only happens when I'm on your site. Is this an issue?
I've ran various scans but I think I'm clean.

Actually, come to think of it, no browser hijacks today.

    August 12th, 2009 | 01:14

Why aren't you running a RAID configuration for you HDD? You really should consider switching to it because your site is just gonna get dog ass slow again in a week or two.

  84. Get rid of popups
    August 12th, 2009 | 01:18

I have Firefox with NoScript and AdBlockPlus and I don't see any ads or popups on this site or any site for that matter. You guys should really stop using IE8 or whatever you might be using and get FF with AdBlockPlus at the very least. Why look at ads when you don't have to?

Well, for me here in Adelaide, Australia, it's a bit up and down. With no other traffic on my line, sometimes it takes 30 seconds or more to respond, sometimes only 2 or 3. Still at least it's up and not refusing connections, as it was most of yesterday.

And the first time I tried to post this, it sat on "please wait" for several minutes, and didn't post it.

    4MB in Perth Australia.

Martin, wouldnt a Raid array be a better idea than a single 500GB drive?

All that load on a single SATA drive is going to lead to reliability issues and may be the cause of the current bottlenecking.

  95. dog
    August 12th, 2009 | 08:44

    oh thanks its up again!.
but then 1TB hd wont be that expensive would it, and also why 667 instead of 800 or higher? ECC module? 667 is bloody slow…

  96. X
    August 12th, 2009 | 09:23

There is a lot to be said about improving performance for a server……..and 667 vs 800 isn't what's important.
Like most things in life, it's all a question of money and knowledge……..and since we don't pay s*** to visit the site, it will be hard to ask for the perfect solution :)
You have RAID issues…….server config…….link……database tweaks……code tweaks…..you could use NLB or Round Robin…..hell, we could be here all day!

Good work, and keep it up guys!

  97. JCinSpain
    August 12th, 2009 | 09:24

The comments took 30 seconds to load, and only after second attempt because the first one timed out. The site is slow and many times it times out or not available. I check the site for posts five to six times every day and I must say that it has got worse. I am truly disappointed with all these new problems.
I have a 20MB connection and of all the sites that I visit, yours has really gone down in speed.
WHATS UP CHAPS, you used to be the best.
Come one, I believe in you guys to get there again.
