New iPhone firmware 1.1.2 hacked instantly

The 1.1.2 firmware update for the iPhone was meant to block hackers from jailbreaking the device. However, almost instantly, this update was hacked as well. Apple’s 1.1.2 update for the iPhone patched a flaw in the way its OS X handles TIFF image processing. The bug was the way hackers gained access to the iPhone after the 1.1.1 update, but apparently they found another way. The new firmware also wiped out third-party applications just like previous updates. Apple said it will open up its iPhone for software developers early next year, as previously rumored. Until then, “It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” said Jobs in October. “We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it’s our job to stop them breaking in.” Good luck with that.

In addition to attempting to block hackers, Apple’s 1.1.2 update actually brings some real improvements: it adds international language and network support to the iPhone (in time for the UK and Germany launches), and the much-desired ability to both add and edit calendar events to the iPod touch. Unlocking the iPhone may be good for customers who aren’t going to be bossed around by Apple, but it hurts both Apple’s and AT&T’s businesses. Apple does not get its cut from AT&T if the device is not activated in their network, whereas AT&T can’t “enslave” yet another customer in its service plans. Late October, Apple acknowledged that around 250,000 of its iPhones were unlocked, out of the 1.4 million iPhones sold until then, which amounts to 17 percent, or about one in six.

    Good news.

With this, it is possible to fuk the European vultures and their pricing and get the iPhone very cheap compared to European prices next time you are in the US, and just use the SIM you’re using for ages. :)

instead of trying so hard to make these phones safe from hackers, they should develop a phone that uses open source software. I could be late with this idea but it is a good one none the less

Well once they open the iPhone up to developers, I’m sure Apple will spend more of their efforts improving the existing software on the phone, instead of trying to keep people out.

I’m still not convinced about the iPhone though. The hype is just too much if you ask me. Aside form the touch interface, there’s not a great deal special about it. If you’ve got the money, and dont actually want a phone with as many features as it’s possible to have on a phone, then I guess the iPhone is great.

But I’m happy with my N95. It does everything I want (and more), it’s not locked to a specific network, it’s not hacked, and it’s got a good developer community. Oh, and it’s got all the features you’d ever want. :P

i have never understood why ppl defend Apple as if they weren’t just as bad as Microshaft, maybe finally they can be seen for what they are now the veneer has been completely removed with this iPoo

    iTunes – rip-off, pisspoor quality
    QuickTime – horrible clunky bloatware
    iPod – overpriced, underspecced
    OSX – bugged to hell
iPhone – extortion device worse than a basic Smartphone

IM US next week — thought you had to buy iPhone with contract in USA? Or do you buy phone and take home then call up AT+T and work out ya contract ?

    November 12th, 2007 | 18:26

    @booboo: Indeed.

  14. November 12th, 2007 | 18:32

IMO, for $400 this is the best that one can get. I get:-
    - Phone (of course)
    - Wi-Fi
    - iPod/MP3 player
    - 3rd party apps/OS X(after Jailbreaking)
    - good looks (you kidding me?)

I feel it’s actually a VFM deal. Or is there any other phone better than this and priced at the same level?

why do companies keep trying to use forms of DRM? none of this stuff works. give up already. all it usually does is piss off your paying customers when things go wrong, which they almost always do.

    November 12th, 2007 | 18:43

huh? I thought I read awhile back that they were going to support the hackers, and not try to stop them.

Touchscreen will always suck as an interface.
Humans need the tactile feedback of real buttons.
Why does “I clicked the mute button” sound more effective than “I touched the mute button”?
Think about it, Aplle, and throw away your design.

    Yes,Nokia N95,

    -A-phone
    -wi-fi
    -gps
    -3G high speed internet
    -Bluetooth
    -Infra red
    -MP3 player
-5mp Carl Zeiss AF lens and flash
    -30 fps video camera 640×480
    -3rd Party Apps and games
-Dedicated Graphics Chip for next gen games
    -300 + mhz cpu
    -Dual slide- 16million colour screen
-Maybe does not look as good as the i-po….phone,
    but not ugly.
Probably got some of this wrong and there is probably more that i forgot.

Why didn’t i just copy and paste all of this instead of typing? oh well must be the passion.

( oh And you can change the firmware yourself via downloads)
and they won’t brick you or tell you off.

Also why can’t company’s just stick to they do best ie. Nokia
just to telecommunications Alpine just make car Hi-Fi ,I
don’t think a company should have there hands in to much

  21. November 12th, 2007 | 19:24

    @ 20 Matt ,
This N 95 is $800 ($550 in Amazon). iPhone is $400. For what we pay, we get good returns.

I don’t own a iPhone, just that I think iPhone is a VFM phone.

without listing it all, like the N95, my sony ericsson 960 has way more power, features and useability than an iPhone and it came FREE with my contract which i pay £25 a month for

    November 12th, 2007 | 21:39

so when the iphone is unlocked it just allows software updates that apple doesn’t want etc? or do you get unlimited free calls from there on out? i don’t quite get it..

    November 12th, 2007 | 21:56

this N95 sounds interesting. will have to look into it. thanks!

    November 12th, 2007 | 22:21

You can get a used one (couple of weeks old),maybe even brand new for £200 ($410).
People get them as upgrades on their contract, they stick them on auction, because they don’t know how to use it,or prefer their old one!

I know this might sound kind of mean, but wouldn’t it be news if it DIDN’T get hacked? Honestly now, everything gets hacked and there is nothing anyone can do to stop em..

Seriously, the N95 is a great device, but it pales in comparison. It is sooooo slow. And the poor plastic case just feels so tacky. Gotta say, the Iphone is great. But it depends on the temper of the individual. If you really need 3G, you are to dependant on the internet. If you really want a great camera, get a real one. If you want a touchscreen iPod with a great interface, that also rings, get an iPhone. I lone my iPhone, and I wouldn’t trade it for nothing. Many people has proposed trades, a lot of them are n95 users. But after my bad n73 experience one thing is sure. I’ll never touch those crappy plastic Nokias anymore…

“If you want a touchscreen iPod with a great interface, get an iPhone”

rotflmao, kinda sums it up! forget the fact that it’s inferior in almost every way to every other new phone and camera out there but… ‘it’s got a great….’

    WAIT FOR IT…

    ‘interface’!

    yeah, well worth £1400

is there anything that doesn’t have the Apple logo on it that these donks wouldn’t pay top dollar for?

  32. Matt
    November 13th, 2007 | 03:22

Yep N73 better than i-phone too!

Way more features,a great MULTIMEDIA device, still more advanced
as well, value for money,I’ll sell you one for £80.imo plays MP3’s better too.

(Oh also check N93,N91,N92,N80 and N81,hell N70 and 6680 had more features)

I don’t mean to go on,but Nokia win,i’d even rate all other mobile phones higher. They might be made of plastic, but i no which one i’d rather drop.

It’s just more revenue that Apple can take from people that don’t know what there talking about, I-pod is not a magic device,it’s an MP3 player, an apple mac (i-mac or whatever) is just an over priced ‘PERSONAL COMPUTER’ for people with more money than sense.

    Good luck!
