Releaselog

New Category: BDRip

As you probably just noticed, I’ve (finally) added a new category called  BDRip. BDRip has been introduced to the scene some time ago, and some of you might remember the release by DMT for Zack And Miri Make A Porno. This movie was first released as a BDRip, and later we received the  traditional DVDRip.

But what is BDRip and why should I care?

First of all, you probably noticed that lately Blu Ray versions are being released before the actual DVDRip popped up. Groups like DMT saw that and released a ‘BDRip’ version of that movie. BDRip is basically just the same thing as a DVDRip, but it uses the Blu Ray as source. BDRip also uses the Xvid codec, and has the same rules concerning multiple CD’s.

You should ‘care’ about this since the quality is a bit better and you can watch the movie most of the time earlier. DMT proposed the following rules:

-BluRay may be used as source only if no DVDRip has already been released.
-Such releases must be tagged .BDRip.
-Reencoding xvids using x264 releases is strictly forbidden.
-BDRip dupes DVDRip, and vice versa, DVDRip dupes BDRip.

Some examples so you can compare:

So I hope you like my idea of bringing you BDRips. Let’s hope other scene groups will follow and that the scene rules get updated:) . Have a nice day.

It seems a lot of posters overlooked the part where DMT say they want to do BDrips because a Blu-ray source often becomes available before a DVD source. Translated for the reading impaired: this means you get to see the damn movie sooner than if you wait for a standard DVDrip.

It has nothing to do with Xvid vs. x264. LOL @ all of the "x264 roxxors xvid sux" posts.

Divx is bringing x264/MKV standards certification to standalone players later this year, so it's safe to assume the scene will update the rules when the time is right.

BDrips? Puh-leeze! If you're looking for the best value combo between resolution/definition and file size, it's about time some smart sceners just ripped Blu-rays to 1280×720 (if its a 1.85 AR movie) or 1280×544 (if it's a 2.35)… BUT… reduce the video bit-rate to reach a 2.2GB file size. That's not so much more than 1.4GB (yeah OK, 50% more) but you get 720p definition and the video quality is good enough. In addition, they could maybe reduce the 640 kbps audio doxn to 448 or even 384 if they really want to max out the video.
Quite honestly, ripping at 3000 to 6000 kbps, just to fill a DVD5 is pure overkill. There's a point where additional bitrate just will not give you a better picture. Hell, I watched a 2.2GB file size HD rip (1280×720) of The Dark Knight (IMAX scenes intact) and it was perfect. You would have to run the movie in slow motion to really see additional quality in a 4.4GB rip.
The more I see sceners agonizing over their stupid rules, the more I figure these guys must have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

non scene rippers like secret_myth and newartriot have been doing BDrips for a long time now using H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format and x264 encoder. even their normal dvdrips r done using x264 encoder .i have since stopped downloading 2 cd xvid rips.700 mb encoded with x264 encoder better than 1.4 GB xvid encoded rip.thats the whole point why H.264/MPEG-4 AVC format was introduced – less size better quality.
check out these rips by secret_myth- http://www.mininova.org/user/secret_myth

What we need is h.264 rips with 704 X 320 and not those stupid 680×232 releases, nobody really cares about burning in to CD's at 700mb.

any good quality stuff around less than 1GB is good enough.

Where is the logic in making things fit onto CD-R's ??? I dont know about you I am sick of having 2 video files for 1 movie!!! and with a BDrip which is usually around 2 gig does that meant the file is going to be split over 4 cds???? I hope not!!!!!

  14. Assbestos
    February 3rd, 2009 | 09:56

Completely superfluous. HDrip is sufficient in that it describes a rip from any HD source, since HDDVD is defunct, those rips will be coming exclusively from BluRay. Now I have two places to look for the same thing. Boo.

DivX Plus™ HD Certified Devices will start hitting shelves this year that support H.264/AAC so why does the scene insist on sticking with sh1tty 700mb xvid releases.

With the price of blank DVD's so cheap who even still buys CD's. It's cheaper to stick a few movies on a blank DVD than burn 1 movie to a CD.

Plus most computers these days are capable of playing H.264 files and with hard drives so cheap it's time to move into the future and change the scene rules.

Those who disagree should get off this site and go back to downloading kvcd or aXXo rips. If you're not willing to join us in the future then you'd better go hide in a box cos we're not going to sit by and wait for you to catch up to the rest of us!

in total agreement with you fella , i have been downloading mainly 700mb files for a number of yrs , quick download , less tear on your bandwidth and download allowance (if your so poor you dont have unlimited);) (bless , we will do a whip round for you!)
i "tversity" * http://tversity.com/ them all thru my tv and yes some would say the crop spoils the film , i say CHANGE YOUR ASPECT RATIO DUMB ASS !!!!!!!
most modern tv's allow some sort of aspect zoom or subtitle zoom , mine allows me a few options like movie , 16.9 ,4.3 ,subtital zoom and a manual option where i can stretch it vertically and horizontally no more black borders !!!

    * (for anyone that is not using tversity)
What is the TVersity Media Server?
The TVersity Media Server lets you manage your Internet and home media and create your personalized lineup of channels, or as we call it your Personal Entertainment Guide (PEG). It then serves this media to a multitude of networked devices in the home or on the go, overcoming their inherent limitations by doing all the necessary conversions on the fly, and thus making your media available anywhere, anytime and on any device.

What devices are supported by the TVersity Media Server?
TVersity is the most versatile media server and the only one that is truly universal in the range of devices it supports. TVersity can serve media to:

    * Devices supporting the UPnP AV / DLNA standard (which is the de-facto standard for connecitivity between devices in the digital home). This includes devices like networked TVs, DVDs, Stereo Receivers, Digital Media Adapaters/Receivers, Mobile Phones, Xbox360,Ps3 ,Satellite and Cable set-top-boxes and more.
    * Devices with a web browser (XHTML-MP or WAP 2.0) and media streaming or downloading capabilities like Mobile Phones, PDAs, the Sony PSP, and more.
    * Devices with an RSS reader and media streaming or downloading capabilities like the Sony PSP, iTunes/iPod and more.

This x264 does sound great and i have noticed that some films are released earlier in this format, but i like to watch them on my standalone DVD player which also plays xvids. My question is, is there a workaround for this or will i need to convert to xvid?

  18. AR
    February 3rd, 2009 | 11:49

For more quality we can download the x264 720p/1080p releases!
If the HD certified divx players only come out later this year why change from xvid to x264 at this moment? We need to wait that the consumers are equiped.

I don't want to download a movie or a sitcom and have to connect everyday my desktop to the tv to watch it. I just want to burn a dvd or save it onto a pen drive to use on the home divx player. I don't want to wait that Windows boots everytime I want a movie, and I like to have a remote to fast foward on the xvid player.
There are 2 cd xvid releases (1400mb) that allow more quality.

So I hope that the scene keeps compatibility with home divx players. Everyone else has other releases and rips available to download.

Just a head up for the people that cant see the screenshots and some other images from releaselog, check your antivirus/firewall software, like kaspersky, some security programs block some images that contain key names such as *banner* *ad* *you got the idea*, you need to allow the program to display those images, its not rlslogs website problem.

ok so, will this BDRIP work on a divx/dvd player, 100 percent?

  23. @frado
    February 3rd, 2009 | 22:42

Frado – "You should ‘care’ about this since the quality is a bit better"

Er… Not really. If there's any appreciable quality difference between a BDRip and a DVDrip, then the DVDrip hasn't been done properly. If both formats are ripped to the same AR and bitrate, the results should be close to identical, and differences would be less a case of better/worse and more a case of "I like that one".

Also, 'scene rules'? Like there's some special charter that they all vote on!? That's not really how it works.

I'll be intrigued to see how much this 'new' format gets used – my guess is it's dead before it's got started.

the question here is why is everyone using dvd-players to play media on tv's?!

i work in electronic retail store so i get to try a new unit every now and then, they're all fine the day you test it but after a while some teen in germany release a new codec and makes the media player useless.

connect the pc to tv and change codec, enjoy!

Some of you guys just aren't that bright:

If you want FULL HD Resolution then download HDRiPS (Bluray, HD-DVD). What your boy means by using 'BDRip' means instead of downsampling a DVD movie to fit 700MB, he/she's doing it with an HD source. Common-sense: no matter how high the source resolution is, a 700MB rip from DVD and a 700MB rip from Bluray will look almost exactly the same…something the mod said as well.

BDrip means the source is from a Bluray disc…but common sense will tell you that 700MB is NOT an HDRiP. Also notice that unlike HDRiP and DVDRiP it's spelled BDRip…NOT BDRiP. Use your brains people.

Nobody is arguing there is probably a "better", sharper, uber superior format than what is currently popular. But some of us are just going for easy and convenient. There are probably 5 movies ever made that I need the best quality for. Smaller files means easier to download and, quite simply, is good enough a majority of the time. It's not that I'm "poor" or "stupid" that I don't need to download huge files of the best version in the proper format. I am amazed that people spend hundreds of [monetary units] a month to watch the same crappy TV shows and unoriginal movies in super quality. It's like polishing a turd. I'm glad the option is there, but I'm also glad the "good enough" material is around. For the record, CAMs and TSs are NOT "good enough". But if people want them, I don't really care.

  47. mandingo
    February 21st, 2009 | 11:41

One last thing: if you take the time to R E A D the mod's post you'll see that the only reason he/she does BDRips is because some movies get released earlier on Bluray than on DVD…so instead of b!tching over stuff you don't clearly understand (such as video resolution), be grateful that someone is using their own precious time to find ways to bring you quality releases as early as possible for free.

    Lmao @ most posts.
These dumb ass comments coming from the rapidshare fanboys and kiddies is hilarious.
Xvid will continue to exist side by side with h.264 and DVD rips.
You want a DVDR then grab a DVDR rip.
Want a BD rip then do so.
Xvid and 700 mb rips have a big user base as exemplified by the large numbers of standalone players sold & being sold.
Not every one has unlimited bandwidth available nor uses their PC as a media center.. yet.

Can't there be room for both?

  52. Borderliner
    March 21st, 2009 | 02:02

You guys are missing an obvious detail – it's not about quality, it's about releasing speed. BDRips weren't thought up because they are better (which they might, but don't have to, be) but because BDs come ocasionally earlier than DVDs. Considering this the usage of TDX rules makes perfect sense – whatever comes first gets ripped first, but at to the same quality output. That's also why CAMs still exist – they come out earliest. Jut the lack of picture/sound is a lot more obvious ;)

  53. nlx
    March 22nd, 2009 | 10:11

    True Borderliner,

That said, the release speeds are terrible at the moment. Still waiting for Friday the 13th DvD Screener while the movie is out of the cinema's already. It seems they only end up on paid sites or something. Or the Pink Panther II. That movie is only on cam for now. No screener as well. The difference between this 'BD-rip' and 'dvd-rip' will probably just 1 week ?
