Releaselog

New Category: BDRip

As you probably just noticed, I’ve (finally) added a new category called  BDRip. BDRip has been introduced to the scene some time ago, and some of you might remember the release by DMT for Zack And Miri Make A Porno. This movie was first released as a BDRip, and later we received the  traditional DVDRip.

But what is BDRip and why should I care?

First of all, you probably noticed that lately Blu Ray versions are being released before the actual DVDRip popped up. Groups like DMT saw that and released a ‘BDRip’ version of that movie. BDRip is basically just the same thing as a DVDRip, but it uses the Blu Ray as source. BDRip also uses the Xvid codec, and has the same rules concerning multiple CD’s.

You should ‘care’ about this since the quality is a bit better and you can watch the movie most of the time earlier. DMT proposed the following rules:

-BluRay may be used as source only if no DVDRip has already been released.
-Such releases must be tagged .BDRip.
-Reencoding xvids using x264 releases is strictly forbidden.
-BDRip dupes DVDRip, and vice versa, DVDRip dupes BDRip.

Some examples so you can compare:

So I hope you like my idea of bringing you BDRips. Let’s hope other scene groups will follow and that the scene rules get updated:) . Have a nice day.

I dont get the whole scene thing – the nuking and unnuking – who comes first – Why not concentrate on making rips in the best quality with full DD or DTS sound. Most people has 20mbit connection these days. I would rather download a 2gb movie in superb quality than a 700mb cheapass quality.

    February 2nd, 2009 | 18:42

Even DVD rips are usually scaled down. This is only about the source, noticed there are are no subs with DMT release, I guess they didn't figure out how to rip those?

    Which mod fails at screencapping?
How can you compare when there seconds apart.
Who knows if lighting or anything changed within that few seconds.
    You need EXACT same screens.

You should have a category for COMPLETE BLURAY, which usually means an image of the BluRay disc itself.

x264 is way better than xvid in my case. But then again, x264 High Profile you need Core 2 Duo or better.

  17. lenny
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:00

it is time to kill xvid, x264 is a much more efficient codec

    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:03

    Where is the difference? O_o

Actually this is a good idea. There is a very big difference between DVDrip and BDRIp, the image is much more clear and sharp.
I advice you (the author) to find another screenshot, this is kind'a not really good

  20. February 2nd, 2009 | 19:06

I know the difference is a bit harder to see, but that's why I also added full video samples..

  22. Caveman
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:09

both screenshots quite the same, eh?
Nevermind,IMO it's time to break so called "scene rules" and offer only Rips from DVD or BD at about 900-1000 MB. For me best compromise between few quality loss and less size in comparison to original DVD or even Blueray disk.

  23. fingerlings
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:10

Those scene BDRips are lame. BDRips aren't new at all, only these ugly XviD ones are new. The scene groups TLF, NewMov, XTM, BMDru, and CNXP have released hundreds of proper BDRips using x264 and AAC the way they should be except for the ridiculous 2CD thing. Who the hell uses CD-R's for movies anymore?!?

m-HD and m-720p are 1000 times better anyways. Go to hd-bb.org to access 1000's of m-HD's. That's the place where all the encoders are.

  24. Donnie Darko
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:12

BDRip is old news, some p2p groups have already done BDRips (or BRRips whatever you want to call them and no I'm not talking about m-HD sh!t) and most of them using x264 codecs which produce cleaner/sharper image. However x264 is not supported by stand alone players and tends to lose efficiency after you burn a video file to CD/DVD.
Also BDRips even in p2p stay withing the 700MB/1.4GB cd, even DMT release was 700mb, so it's quite pointless to discuss if people have the connection or bandwith to get BDRips. I, for one, would love to see more and more of this "new" type of ripping output and finally replace the DVDRips since you get better quality for the same size.

PS: I agree with InFaDeLiTy about the screenshots, you need two identical frames from the different source to make a proper comparison.

  25. J
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:14

fist of all those two screens aren't same frame so no comparison can be done, secondly using xvid on bdsource is nonsense – x264 does much better job.

  26. Julio
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:25

In BDrip the pixels are more defined and when you see it moving you can't notice the scale down pixels like when it happens with the normal dvdrip…

You need to look closely to both images to notices the definition even if they are both the same size…

Dvdrip and DVDrip screener are better than VHS rip screener
BDrip is way better than Dvdrip even if they are the same size…
And x264 as codec is better than xvid…
720p is better than BDrip and x264 because image size is bigger…
1080p is even better than everything else cos it's even bigger than 720p.

Nice screenshots, Craig Robinson is the man. "I'm so excited!" ;-)

    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:28

oh, no, it's time to forget xvid alredy! x264 is the way to go!

i think it's the right moment to rewrite some rules.

    1. no more 700mb movies rip!
    2. rip movies into ONE single file, no more BS 2CD's rip!
    3. use x264
    4. add at least english subtitles as well!
    5. send xvid 6 feet under

without it, it's just same old, same old!

  29. EmperorAtahualpa
    February 2nd, 2009 | 19:28

I like the fact that some people now rip BluRay discs with 700MB releases. I downloaded and watched both the DVDRip and the BDRip version of "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" and noticed the better image quality of the BDRip compared to the DVDRip, if only just slightly.

However, what I don't like about the BDRips is the name! Technically, the BluRay scene releases in DVD5 or DVD9 are also BluRay rips or BDRips, so the name is a little confusing.

Let me get something straight here…
Blue ray will be the next big thing in the next couple years in the scene releases ? x256 instead of Xvid ? Thats how it'll roll ?

DVDrips will be a blast from the past ?

XviD doesn't uses lower processor power compared to x264. That's why it won't ever be "killed". You can play XviD on any DivX certified DVD player. Good luck playing x264 video on a DVD player.

  55. Moshster
    February 2nd, 2009 | 20:47

Here here! Time to retire XviD and switch to AVC/VC1/x264. Also switch to Matroska containers and retire the 20 year old AVI container format.

  56. pop pop
    February 2nd, 2009 | 20:50

It's funny how being used to watch almost everything in HD makes you realize the futility of having 2 separate groups for standards res. xvid encodes. xD

  57. bleble
    February 2nd, 2009 | 20:58

This makes no sense. If the output file is the same codec and same resolution, than what do I care about the source? All it does is make me check two separate categories for no reason.
If they really want to differentiate between the two, just make the new rips higher resolution and ditch the stupid 700MB limit already. And stop rescaling, leave a native DVD resolution for DVDRips.
The standards for DVDRips were set up almost a decade ago in a complete different era. The scene is starting to fall technologically behind most mainstream video providers, like youtube, hulu or netflix.

  58. valgore
    February 2nd, 2009 | 21:03

Thanks for the info its realy good to know but the screen pics are funny because the dvdrip pic looks sharper than bd

  59. Raptoger
    February 2nd, 2009 | 21:09

I completely agree, drop the 700MB limit and switch to H264 codec. We all have outgrown the CD era, 56Kbps connection. Lets get updated already. Every movie in H.264 looks better when at least 1000MB in size.

  60. TheGoD
    February 2nd, 2009 | 21:10

BDRips as a category? Sorry guys, but thats real dumb! First of, the differents on the sample isnt that great and in many cases there wont be a difference at all because the studios using the same blueprint for the (commercial) BD-Release and the DVD-Release. Seperating BD-Rips form DVD-Rips just divites the avialable releases in two groups who virtually share the same quality and makes searching more complicated. So please rethink your decision.

On the other site a got to agree with the majority that sticking to the scene rules is just plain stupid! Its 2k9 people!! I virtualy dont know anybody who still burns movies the regular cd's. Most of the people are using dvd's for years or keep on buying new Hard Disks when the run out of space. SO PLEASE STOP USING CD SIZES! If u want to stick to a standard size (which is dump anyway because flicks dont stick to a standard lengh) use a third or a half of a dvd-r!!!

The other think is this nonsense regarding the used video-codecs. While I can unterstand why mp3 is still around I think x264 or wmv are way better choices when it comes to video-encoding. The offer the same quality at a lower size or better quality at the same size compared to mpeg 4 asp. Most of the people who download movies online on a regular bases got a pc or game-console hooked up to there tv anyway. Plus u can always reencode to the format of your own choice. I mean, DivX certified DVD player cant play RAR-files ether and still the vast majority of releases hit the wire as RAR-files!

  69. noone
    February 2nd, 2009 | 21:50

    honestly, horrible idea…

it defeats the whole concept of rips… people don't go and create more video formats and scene type releases because they want to, they create them because they need them, H.264 (not x264) exists because someone thought they could improve the compression in videos… BD exists because someone thought they could make larger capacity discs (beside other things)… and the only reason people still use xvid is because of compatibility purposes..

    that said:
    1. There is no gain on having a "BDrip" and a DVDrip since their quality will eventually be the same because they dumb down the resolution and compression to fit in a compatible 700MB disc
    2. DVDs still come up first then BDs… just because one particular film didn't you don't create a whole new "scene category" for it
    3. by the time BDs take over DVDs so will H.264 take over xvid, which means either smaller files or larger resolution videos, so even if eventually the scene "creates" a new BDrip category they will have their own "rules" for it, imposing rules on something that isn't even a necessity yet is plain stupid…

I agree that BDrips have to be encoded right and not everyone know what the %&*% that means.

    February 2nd, 2009 | 22:49

I think Xvid is still fine. BDRip is good if you have a giant television and also a capability to play x264 onto your TV. This either requires a computer connected to it or other hardware usually starting at about $150 for something like Western Digital TV box or $400 for a PS3.

Xvid is fine for watching movies at your computer on a 20ish inch and under monitor. You won't really notice a quality difference until you display it on a 40+ inch TV. If you don't do this then you're wasting your bandwidth. And speaking of bandwidth, no most people don't have 20mbit. In the USA pretty much NOBODY does aside from FIOS users which is like less than 1% of Internet users. Not to mention most of the major ISP's have bandwidth caps such as Comcast's 250GB limit. I'm not getting giant x264 rips when I can get twice as many movies per month getting Xvids.

So if I had a) a giant TV, b) 10mbit+ consistent speed, c) unlimited bandwidth, and d) hardware to display x264/Bluray on a TV then I would be all for BDRips and such. But since I nor do 99% of people in the USA satisfy all 4 of these requirements then its utterly pointless to waste your time on anything but 700-1400mb Xvid rips. Peace.

I think the BDrip is a great idea but when are the groups that rip these things going to realise that noone cares about CD's anymore!! Why are you still ripping them to 700mb, everyone buys DVD-R these days so why cant you start upping the resolution of these rip to something of a higher quality and make sure all rips have AC3 sound??? So many people have Dolby Digital Amplifiers but cant use them for good sound anymore unless they buy a dvd, and why would they do that when they can get the movies from torrents 6 months earlier. I think it's time to raise the quality bar a little guys!!!

I think they should finally make the DVDrip standard to have full dvd resolution and Dolby Digital AC3 sound and stop worrying about trying to fit the movies onto an out of date format that noone uses anymore(CD's). Everybody plays these movies on either a dvd player or a Media Center or a PC which all have DVD drives in them so why cant the file size be increased a little and a better quality DVDrip be produced, i think it's about time, especially if Blue Ray is going to start being used as the sourced for these rips now. Why bother ripping them down to 500*300 resolution from 1920*1080 when DVD standard is 720*576, doesn't make sense to me, most people have huge download limits these days so lets stop living in the past, move to the present, people dont even burn music to cd's that much anymore, it's time for HIGHER QUALITY DVDRIPS!!!!!!!

I think people are confused with HD 720/1080 xvids which use the mkv container & BR/BDrips. The BR/BDrips are much clearer & have better sound then standard dvdrips xvids but use the same container & with the same resolution but bigger file size so u can play them on standalone or other compatable players through usb or on your pc. BR/BDrips are very cool but mkv is the future.Until Standalone players play mkv nothing will change..

Seems many forget that not every country in the world propose unlimited download and high speed broadband.

Also ripping in the smallest possible size with highest quality is a Challenge that pushes the limit of codec and knowhow of the encoder.

Each encoder have it's own matrices, scripts and filters that keep them as secret as possible. It's a hard work and hours of test and research to be able to encode as good as some encoders.

I've seen some better quality 700MB than 1.4GB rips. If you liked a movie, support it by actually buying it.

It seems a lot of posters overlooked the part where DMT say they want to do BDrips because a Blu-ray source often becomes available before a DVD source. Translated for the reading impaired: this means you get to see the damn movie sooner than if you wait for a standard DVDrip.

It has nothing to do with Xvid vs. x264. LOL @ all of the "x264 roxxors xvid sux" posts.

Divx is bringing x264/MKV standards certification to standalone players later this year, so it's safe to assume the scene will update the rules when the time is right.

BDrips? Puh-leeze! If you're looking for the best value combo between resolution/definition and file size, it's about time some smart sceners just ripped Blu-rays to 1280×720 (if its a 1.85 AR movie) or 1280×544 (if it's a 2.35)… BUT… reduce the video bit-rate to reach a 2.2GB file size. That's not so much more than 1.4GB (yeah OK, 50% more) but you get 720p definition and the video quality is good enough. In addition, they could maybe reduce the 640 kbps audio doxn to 448 or even 384 if they really want to max out the video.
Quite honestly, ripping at 3000 to 6000 kbps, just to fill a DVD5 is pure overkill. There's a point where additional bitrate just will not give you a better picture. Hell, I watched a 2.2GB file size HD rip (1280×720) of The Dark Knight (IMAX scenes intact) and it was perfect. You would have to run the movie in slow motion to really see additional quality in a 4.4GB rip.
The more I see sceners agonizing over their stupid rules, the more I figure these guys must have obsessive-compulsive disorder.

DivX Plus™ HD Certified Devices will start hitting shelves this year that support H.264/AAC so why does the scene insist on sticking with sh1tty 700mb xvid releases.

With the price of blank DVD's so cheap who even still buys CD's. It's cheaper to stick a few movies on a blank DVD than burn 1 movie to a CD.

Plus most computers these days are capable of playing H.264 files and with hard drives so cheap it's time to move into the future and change the scene rules.

Those who disagree should get off this site and go back to downloading kvcd or aXXo rips. If you're not willing to join us in the future then you'd better go hide in a box cos we're not going to sit by and wait for you to catch up to the rest of us!

i "tversity" * http://tversity.com/ them all thru my tv and yes some would say the crop spoils the film , i say CHANGE YOUR ASPECT RATIO DUMB ASS !!!!!!!
most modern tv's allow some sort of aspect zoom or subtitle zoom , mine allows me a few options like movie , 16.9 ,4.3 ,subtital zoom and a manual option where i can stretch it vertically and horizontally no more black borders !!!

What is the TVersity Media Server?
The TVersity Media Server lets you manage your Internet and home media and create your personalized lineup of channels, or as we call it your Personal Entertainment Guide (PEG). It then serves this media to a multitude of networked devices in the home or on the go, overcoming their inherent limitations by doing all the necessary conversions on the fly, and thus making your media available anywhere, anytime and on any device.

What devices are supported by the TVersity Media Server?
TVersity is the most versatile media server and the only one that is truly universal in the range of devices it supports. TVersity can serve media to:

    * Devices supporting the UPnP AV / DLNA standard (which is the de-facto standard for connecitivity between devices in the digital home). This includes devices like networked TVs, DVDs, Stereo Receivers, Digital Media Adapaters/Receivers, Mobile Phones, Xbox360,Ps3 ,Satellite and Cable set-top-boxes and more.
    * Devices with a web browser (XHTML-MP or WAP 2.0) and media streaming or downloading capabilities like Mobile Phones, PDAs, the Sony PSP, and more.
    * Devices with an RSS reader and media streaming or downloading capabilities like the Sony PSP, iTunes/iPod and more.

This x264 does sound great and i have noticed that some films are released earlier in this format, but i like to watch them on my standalone DVD player which also plays xvids. My question is, is there a workaround for this or will i need to convert to xvid?

  118. AR
    February 3rd, 2009 | 11:49

For more quality we can download the x264 720p/1080p releases!
If the HD certified divx players only come out later this year why change from xvid to x264 at this moment? We need to wait that the consumers are equiped.

I don't want to download a movie or a sitcom and have to connect everyday my desktop to the tv to watch it. I just want to burn a dvd or save it onto a pen drive to use on the home divx player. I don't want to wait that Windows boots everytime I want a movie, and I like to have a remote to fast foward on the xvid player.
There are 2 cd xvid releases (1400mb) that allow more quality.

So I hope that the scene keeps compatibility with home divx players. Everyone else has other releases and rips available to download.

  123. @frado
    February 3rd, 2009 | 22:42

Frado – "You should ‘care’ about this since the quality is a bit better"

Er… Not really. If there's any appreciable quality difference between a BDRip and a DVDrip, then the DVDrip hasn't been done properly. If both formats are ripped to the same AR and bitrate, the results should be close to identical, and differences would be less a case of better/worse and more a case of "I like that one".

Also, 'scene rules'? Like there's some special charter that they all vote on!? That's not really how it works.

I'll be intrigued to see how much this 'new' format gets used – my guess is it's dead before it's got started.

Some of you guys just aren't that bright:

If you want FULL HD Resolution then download HDRiPS (Bluray, HD-DVD). What your boy means by using 'BDRip' means instead of downsampling a DVD movie to fit 700MB, he/she's doing it with an HD source. Common-sense: no matter how high the source resolution is, a 700MB rip from DVD and a 700MB rip from Bluray will look almost exactly the same…something the mod said as well.

BDrip means the source is from a Bluray disc…but common sense will tell you that 700MB is NOT an HDRiP. Also notice that unlike HDRiP and DVDRiP it's spelled BDRip…NOT BDRiP. Use your brains people.

Nobody is arguing there is probably a "better", sharper, uber superior format than what is currently popular. But some of us are just going for easy and convenient. There are probably 5 movies ever made that I need the best quality for. Smaller files means easier to download and, quite simply, is good enough a majority of the time. It's not that I'm "poor" or "stupid" that I don't need to download huge files of the best version in the proper format. I am amazed that people spend hundreds of [monetary units] a month to watch the same crappy TV shows and unoriginal movies in super quality. It's like polishing a turd. I'm glad the option is there, but I'm also glad the "good enough" material is around. For the record, CAMs and TSs are NOT "good enough". But if people want them, I don't really care.

One last thing: if you take the time to R E A D the mod's post you'll see that the only reason he/she does BDRips is because some movies get released earlier on Bluray than on DVD…so instead of b!tching over stuff you don't clearly understand (such as video resolution), be grateful that someone is using their own precious time to find ways to bring you quality releases as early as possible for free.

  152. Borderliner
    March 21st, 2009 | 02:02

You guys are missing an obvious detail – it's not about quality, it's about releasing speed. BDRips weren't thought up because they are better (which they might, but don't have to, be) but because BDs come ocasionally earlier than DVDs. Considering this the usage of TDX rules makes perfect sense – whatever comes first gets ripped first, but at to the same quality output. That's also why CAMs still exist – they come out earliest. Jut the lack of picture/sound is a lot more obvious ;)

  153. nlx
    March 22nd, 2009 | 10:11

    True Borderliner,

That said, the release speeds are terrible at the moment. Still waiting for Friday the 13th DvD Screener while the movie is out of the cinema's already. It seems they only end up on paid sites or something. Or the Pink Panther II. That movie is only on cam for now. No screener as well. The difference between this 'BD-rip' and 'dvd-rip' will probably just 1 week ?
