Releaselog

New antispam script installed

I’ve decided to try a new antispam plugin. As you probably know, Releaselog is running on Wordpress – which is also very popular by authors of all these spambots. I’ve used SpamKarma till now, and it worked quite good. But lately, spammers introduced new method of comment spam: they submit hundreds of comments which do not contain any links in the message and looks just like a normal comment. The common example would be something like “Hey, this is a great website, I’ll definitely keep returning here.” And instead of a link in the body, there’s another link in the website input field. So the effect is same, but it just fools all these spam filtres.

And that’s why I made a new script: it’s a simple question above the comment box. You will have to count a sum of two numbers in most cases, but these questions may vary in the future. I hope this will definitely keep all bots out of our site and you won’t have to read through any spam messages here…

Don't be rude (permban), use only English, don't go offtopic and read FAQ before asking a question. Owners of this website aren't responsible for content of comments.

It took me seven attempts to work out what 3+8 is! This new spam protection is unfair for people who can’t do math!

damn, those math tasks are quite difficult :P

nice script tho, all the best that it works out the way you want it

Well… don’t wanna be rude, but it’s easy to get past this spam protection… you only have to tell the bot to write a number from 1 to 10 in that little box, and this way each 10th try will produce a message for him… do this 10*100 times and that’s 100 spam messages… why don’t you use the good ol’ scrabbled world protection?

  5. ekr3peeK
    February 21st, 2007 | 21:50

Why don’t you use more difficult equalations?:D For example:

    ln[(x+5)(x+5)]*cos(x)arcsin(x*53)=sin[cos(x)]*arctg[x*sin(x)]

    Please type in what’s X:D

Is this modern math? Hey, I like it…. it follows one of my principles: KIS: Keep It Simple

When things get complex, often the best solution(s) is/are the simple ones.

Very Good Martin, you just built a better mouse trap.

    February 22nd, 2007 | 00:24

^ See Martin, the spambots are too smart, they can get around your little trap no matter what you do.

    This is a huge failure.

Spambots with artifical intelligence….must be examples of US president and prime ministers of European countries…

  26. V@no
    February 22nd, 2007 | 00:44

This is very good idea! I like it.
Though, this method is very easy to get around…
Even “CAPTCHA” is not 100% proof, people are working on creating “intelligent” bots that can read text from images…there are already many of such bots for sale, more to come..
but still, CAPTCHA is much better then plain text in the page source as it is right now here
So, my advice would be find a free CAPTCHA script and change it to have math formula in it or something like that ;)

its not that hard to get around this protection at all. All you have to do is parse that small line and look for select terms. You should have the numbers as an image and have it like the distorted images, but still human readable.

  34. February 22nd, 2007 | 05:27

This system is shit! try to come up with something orignal.dont try to copy techniques pal. inroduce some other technique to catch spams.people who visit your site are fools and the pirates can only download movies they cant fuckin add.

Actually [deXter], this is a CAPTCHA aswell. It doesnt have to be an image.

And the best CAPTCHA’s are the ones being original. Where you have to create a bot for a specific site.

I think spammers best choice is setting up sweatshops with humans solving captchas en mass.

  40. XBL
    February 22nd, 2007 | 09:54

It’s a nice solution as long as other weblogs don’t use it in the same manner and as long as there are no spammers who want to spam specifically this blog. It would be quite easy to read the calculation with a bot (which would mean you would have to resort to CAPTCHA).

Btw, asking ’sum of n + n’ is incorrect. You either ask the sum of n and n or you ask n + n (which is the calculation for the sum of n and n).

I avoid spam using some tricks in my code like a boobytraps. This is a form field inside an invisible table field. In the php code I check if this form field has been filled in. If so then spammer is caught in boobytrap. Spam scripts scan your html form for input fields and fill them with content.
Another trick I use is checking the exact time the message is posted. If there are more messages inside the database posted at exactly the same time I delete them all. With this trick spam deletes itself from my database.

I personally find those redirect ads more annoying – you know the ones, the page loads up, you start to read an article then BAM! The page is ninja-directed to an ad page like ebay or something.

    Very irritating :(

  45. February 22nd, 2007 | 11:56

yeah fuck this annoyance pal. get rid of this shit and restore the original system.

  46. February 22nd, 2007 | 12:36

well another reason why i introduced this system could be that it also filters out people with IQ lower than 90, so as the result, the discussion here will be held only by *clever* people :]

  47. Metaph
    February 22nd, 2007 | 14:05

Well.. seems like some Spam definitely still trickled through – all those great site comments ;)

CAPTCHA is probably a better option than this simple math.

hey whats wrong with you pal? almost everyone here says that they don’t want this system in place. i know spam can be a pain in the ass but this is more of headache pal. and trust me i have more I.Q. than you.

here i’ ll give you an example:

SYSTEM: What the fcuk is 2+6 ?

YOU: uh………4? no….no….no…..wait 5????? no……its 6 or maybe 7? it can be any damn thing but it sure can’t be muthafucking 8. i am fuckin sure of that!

this is the worst fucking implementation of spam protection i’ve ever seen. the question is presented in plain html, no ai is even necessary. here’s the html source line:
    Spam protection: Sum of 2 + 7 ?
i could write a program to bypass this in an hour. sure you get rid of all the bots immediately but you aren’t fooling any one.
