Net fraud at record high $270M in 2007
Craigslist and Ebay are becoming the new back alleys and shady neighborhoods as Internet fraud has reached an all-time high at $240 million lost in 2007, according to The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in report conducted in partnership the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. The report (PDF) shows that, for 2007, the number of Internet scams has been reduced, but the amount lost has risen $40 million. IC3 received 206,884 complaints about online crimes in 2007.The statistics gathered are mind boggling as it shows that men are losing more, on average, and individuals over the age of 60 are losing almost double of what individuals in their 20s are losing.
The average amount lost for men is $765, while the average lost for women is at $552. People over the age of 60 are losing $760 per online scam compared to $385 for individuals in their 20s. The most common case of Internet crime is fraud. This is where individuals are making purchases online and not receiving the correct goods, or any goods at all. It’s not just Ebay and Craigslist being home to all of the frauds. This past year has seen big increases in pet scams, online dating fraud and the two trusty old frauds: spam e-mail and phishing, where fake e-mails are sent trying to bait you into giving private information like logins or financial information. The report also notes that scammers use crises like the Minnesota bridge collapse from 2007 to extract funds from individuals.

I don’t understand how people fall for those phishing emails. I’ve got a few of them and the spelling and grammar is appalling. Certainly not the sort of email you would expect from a huge international banking group.
seriously I’ve “won the lottery” like 10000000 times never been stupid enough to claim. if it seems to good to be true its not true - golden rule for the internet.

I guess this category does not include those 419 scams. I read somewhere that in 2006 here in canada, $10bn was lost to those scams… or maybe it was the US… but it was definately more than $270mn

For some odd reason my neigboars have tried to keep it quiet that they got scammed by an email promising them MILLIONS.
I warned their son, but I guess some people are either too greedy or too naiv to get fooled.

Most of these scams prey on people who are lonely or low, its wrong to laugh because we have all fallen for ONE scam in life at some point or another….
Either on-line or in life (IE Fair grounds ETC…)
Its even caused the deaths of a few older people..
My advise would be and its very simple…
If it sounds too good to be true then it usually is….
Nothing is free.. (Except you know what ;D)

People look to be honest yet still scam you. They can send you stuff that is not nearly to what was advertised… Its still s scams and in some instances, you can’t detect these. So…STFU and pray you don’t get scammed out of your hard earned money.
Ebay is nothing but a total scambay. If you want to sell your stuff, start a legitimate online outlet and sell through online chains like amazon. Ebay is for noobs.
If ebay allowed comments to be posted below items for sell, then people can warn others of the scams like they do with torrents. But ebay DOESN’T!!! So you never can read what others have to say besides their “purchase” rating comments…but half of those are all staged and scammed! DON’T TRUST IT! IT WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND LEAVE YOU IN THE STREET SHOELESS AND NAKED!

I got scammed thrice on ebay.. both times were from d-heads buying cell phones. FEEBAY BLOWS AND IS A HAVEN FOR SCAMMERS

Ive been done on Ebay and it was a bloody wallet for £25!

Scams will always be here in 1 form or another, its human nature to rip the less fortunate off!
It’d fall into the category of stupidity tax if not for real scams in online auctions. I don’t see how you can avoid those, short of not using the service

The bigger the trick, and older the trick, the easier it is to pull.
Based on two principles.
They think it cant be that old or it cant be that big for so many to have fallen for it.
Modern day analists call this fraud. Please remember the concept of the con, a conman pulled the same tricks 2000 years ago, cept he didnt do it online. Afterall you call these people “Con”men, Con stands for Confidence. All these sites, or these people have to do is convince you to give them money.
Closet I ever came was purchasing something from Buy.com..they are a**holes to get a refund from..don’t ever deal with them..use newegg.com if your buying computer hardwares either..oh yeah..I have won 50,000 Ipods..don’t know what to do with them all, lol
Being closeminded on this issua I think all scammers should be heavily punished for any cybercrime so they would learn their lesson. These statistics just show how people are fu**ed up ..

I don’t mind these little-fish scammers, even if they fleece a few people. They are so fake, its almost more honest. Its the “honest” retailers that freak me, who is your Master card? You need a Visa in this country! If those poor old folks fell for a misspelled “You have won millons” than I hate to think of the interest rates they must have!
Sigh… its all a scam, some are just more obvious.
Of course I do live in the US, so I might be a touch cynical about this
