HOT, HOT, HOT off the press! Release group XXL has brought us Canadian songstress Nelly Furtado’s special edition of her debut album Whoa, Nelly! Pretty proud of this one, being a Canuck myself (Nelly comes from a Portuguese background just fyi). Nelly came onto the pop scene as a very innocent down to earth singer with a powerful voice and some O.K. tunes. Now she is a ‘Promiscuous Girl’, lol. At any rate, this album bring me back a few years, in ‘00 when pop was ‘in’ around my town. May I suggest ‘Turn Off The Light’ and ‘I’m Like A Bird’? Her obvious top singles from this album. Enjoy!

Whoa, Nelly! is the debut album by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, released by DreamWorks Records in North America on October 24, 2000. Slant magazine called it “a delightful and refreshing antidote to the army of ‘pop princesses’ and rap-metal bands that had taken over popular music at the turn of the millennium.” The sound of the album was strongly influenced by musicians who had traversed cultures and “the challenge of making heartfelt, emotional music that’s upbeat and hopeful.” One of the songs on this album, “Scared of You” has portions of the song in Portuguese, while “Onde Estás” is entirely in Portuguese, the official language of Portugal, which reflects Furtado’s Portuguese heritage.

    as for the album…er, so, 3 b-sides and two remixes on a second disc? disappointingly un-creative, i’d've expected something more with a re-release, have had the b-sides for ages, and frankly, i just don’t think i want remixes… :( well, not surprising tho, after Loose, i think, she just lost all the originality she had had as an artist. :(

    It’s too bad that’s all her stuff has become now – mediocre pop pabulum. Her first album was unique and refreshing.

    Thats funny….she took her first album which apparently earned tons of praise for being an alternative to the army of pop-princesses or whatever….so she hires Timbaland and puts Justin Timberlake and Nelly the rapper on it to make sure its as pop as all the other shat? WTF is wrong with these artists…and they wonder why we steal this crap. Flippen sell-outs…all of em.

    Yeah, the only differences are the five songs on Disc 2. Can’t believe that they actually re-released this CD with only five new songs, just to get some fast cash. And are the songs even newly recorded or were they recorded back when the CD was originally made? One or two of the songs on Disc 2 I can swear I’ve heard before. Like the acoustic version of I’m Like a Bird. I’m about 99.5% sure I’ve heard that quite a while back. Oh well, hope no one actually spends money on this. Very cheap of the record company.

    The special edition content does seem lacking. Why not the “Turn Off the Lights” remix with Timbaland that got quite a bit of play when the single was out?

    Most of the tracks on this “special edition” release are already on the 16-track UK version of the album that’s been out for years! BTW, am I the only one who hates that Nelly Furtado’s record company keeps re-issuing her albums with slightly different tracklists, particularly in the UK? A nasty ploy to make more cash off die-hard fans, I suspect…

    Nelly started to look like Paris Hilton since she admited that she was indeed bisexual. And yes, she’s Portuguese and worked as a maid in a portuguese hotel in Azores.
    Too bad she hasn’t accepted the invittation to pose for Playboy.

    Actually she was born in Vancouver, Canada tyvm. Her folks immigrated to Canada from Portugal and she has very strong ties w/ her folks homeland.

    I worked with a dude and his wife is Portuguese. Her family feuds with Nelly’s family. I guess the two family comprise of majority of the Portuguese population in Victoria.

    I bought her first album and enjoyed. The second I also purchased and overall wasn’t happy. Her third I downloaded, and that helped to make a decision to never purchase any of her albums again. Also, after her first album, every bit of news I’d hear regarding her just made me lose more and more respect for her. Agreed she’s a sellout like the rest. The mentality of today’s artist is “Why be original and risk the sales?”
