Neil Diamond - Home Before Dark (2008)

This is a guest post written by Chinballs.

Neil Diamond’s latest? I know you must think I’m kidding, but I think I’m going to give this a shot. It’s produced by Rick Rubin, who very simply might be the greatest record producer that wasn’t recently involved in a murder trial. When you combine that with the fact that everyone knows at least some Neil songs, he’s had a movie declare him “America’s greatest singer-songwriter”(Saving Silverman, definitely a funny flick), who knows, it just might end up being a really good album.

Home Before Dark is the long awaited new album from legendary artist Neil Diamond. Home Before Dark was produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin who also produced Neil’s critically acclaimed 12 Songs.

Neil Diamond is one of pop music’s most enduring and successful singer-songwriters. As a successful pop music performer, Diamond scored a number of hits worldwide in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Critic William Ruhlmann wrote of Diamond, “As of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart.” As of May 2005 Diamond had sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.

Finally some music I can relate to after all the trash that’s been posted in the last few days because of the competition! All those wannabes together can´t hold a candle to Diamond’s artistry! Its not for everyone’s taste, granted, but anyone dismissing his work is just talking out of his a$$…

The Diamond once beat a fan to death with his microphone stand. According to the Diamond, said fan “eyeballed him funny”, and that set him off.

Whilst I’m no fan of Neil Diamond, it’s nice to see some music on here which isn’t crappy rap or death metal.

And there’s a fair amount of music out there to be found. Weezer’s latest album virtually leaked in its entirety last week (8 out of 10 tracks leaked) and there’s bound to be more stuff out there.

Neil Diamond’s music will out last ANY pop, techno, metal or rap album that has come out in the past 20 years.

Do you think people are going to remember Tu Pak, Mariah Carey, Eminem or Neil Diamond?

Exactly. So shut up and get with the clue. This “Me Generations” art (if you can call it that) is 100% dismissable.

will people remember tupac or eminem? lol, u obviously have no idea about music or the music industry. both artists have already established themselves as legends. u think it’s a coincidence that there are “new” tupac albums coming out every year or so?

  22. HarryBlows
    May 13th, 2008 | 20:12

@ desTTroy: “Good music” is relative. People like what they like and they like different things. My opinion of the music you posted is that it’s boring and repetitive. My opinion. Does that make it less good to you? No. So why would your opinion change anything either?

  23. venomhed
    May 13th, 2008 | 20:24

    @ John Dykes

Interesting. Eminem as a legend? Lets see, he wrote the hits songs…. uh….. hold on, its on the tip of my tongue…..

    hmm……

There you go. Perfect example of how YOUR music is completely trendy and forgettable. Eminem has ZERO timeless classics, Neil has quite a few. I am not a huge fan of Neil, but he is well known and respected for MAKING HIS OWN MUSIC!

Not some white kid acting black and being marketing to rich, bored white kids.

    Eminem a legend…. f’ing PLEASE!

  24. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 21:36

look, it’s not my personal opinion that eminem is already a legend. i was under the impression that it is already a given fact. even if u disregard his musical/lyrical/rapping abilities, u will still have to include his name in the music industry because he’s also a producer and has his “own” record company etc.

he is legendary in a sense that he is well respected in the RAP/HIPHOP scene and as well as a successful producer. not to mention that the rap biz is usually dominated by black artist if you havent realized. it’s not my fault that the majority of his fans are stupid rich white kids that buy his cds and make him so popular.

  25. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 21:45

i cant believe u even tried to compare neil diamond to eminem and tupac. thats just silly talk.

just to prove my point, i can assure u that neil diamond has won fewer prestigious awards and perhaps even made less money over the years than eminem.

i’m just sorry if your personal taste in music contradicts with the general consensus of critics and the public alike.

Popularity definitely does not equal talent.

  27. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 22:21

so Tom, u are saying that every popular artist is definitely not talented and that popularity excludes talent? or are u merely describing the american music scene?

there will always be jackasses like you u who think that they are smarter than the masses, but then go home and watch primetime tv like the other 30-40mio people

    @ John Diks

John - I can tell you are extremely young and naive. Was MTV around when Neil Diamond came out? Are there as many people on the earth as when Neil was around as when Eminem was around? Is it not easier to get music today via online outlets, stores, etc that when Neil was around with Vinyl only (which later he transitioned to Cd etc?)

By your assessment you are going to state that Tupac and Eminem are bigger than the Rolling Stones or Elvis?

really, you have no arguement. Hip Hop, whle incredibly popular, by and large world wide has been dismissed. In case you didn’t know, in Europe for their music awards a death metal band won all the categories.

don’t let your bubble america mentality equate to the entire world kid. Eminem and Tupac are no where near legends. Let me give you a list of collective legends:

    Elvis
    Rolling Stones
    Chuck Berry
    Beatles
    Beach Boys
    Led Zepplin
    etc

Theres a difference betwenn legends, and legends in their own mind.

    May 13th, 2008 | 22:26

    @ John

    “popularity excludes talent?”

Sure. Go ahead and download another torrent item on this site John:

    http://www.rlslog.net/madonna-ft-justin-timberlake-4-minutes-dvdrip-x264-2008-mvhits/

And I agree with Tom and have provided proof. Popularity, especially in the link above, definitely, positively excludes talent.

  30. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:05

you are absolutely missing my point venomhed. i willingly approve your list of legends. i also have the decency to admit that modern technologies give todays artists a better platform to sell their music and expose it to a larger set of audience. and just to be clear, i am a huge fan of neil diamond, elvis, rolling stones, pink floyd, beatles etc.

my initial point was simple, how can you say that tupac, the man who epitomizes a part of the rap scene, is not a legend in his own genre? come on, just a little research on your behalf and a decent sense of neutral judgement, you will agree with me.

it’s astonishing how some people associate simple knowledge about hip hop/rap with naivety, get all aggressive about it and reduce the other person to a mainstream-music loving 12 yr old. it just proves that u are extremely prejudice and quite simply lacking general music knowledge.

    May 13th, 2008 | 23:14

Madonna has no talent??? There are some people here that don´t respect other people´s music tastes. Eminem might not be a legend, but I´m pretty sure that Madonna is a legend. She is 50 now and her music, in the world of pop and dance music, is very good. Sorry if you don´t like it.

  32. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:18

“As of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart.” As of May 2005 Diamond had sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.”

now how did you put it again venomhed, i better quote you so u wudnt think that it’s my own opinion, “Popularity,…, definitely, positively excludes talent.” so now who’s more popular, eminem or neil diamond? and which one is more talented?

  33. Venomhed
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:22

@ guxt - Madonna could be a legend, unless she continues to try to play the role of 50 year old being cool with the 18 year olds thus ruining her legendary status. With the link i provided, i was merely proving that neither Justin Timberlake nor Madonna 2008 have any talent, and are here only due to popularity. Heck, Justin Timberlake even changes his personality base on the crowd he is around. All whites? Justin acts white. All blacks? Justin mysteriously develops white ghetto slang.

    About tupac:
“His mother, Afeni Shakur, was an active member of the Black Panther Party in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s”

So its ok to make black racists legends eh? Please. He was a disgrace.

  34. john dykes
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:32

    @ Venomhed,

can you answer my question @33 please, so i know that u are not a white music loving racist, who accidentally included a single black musician in his legends list to seem open minded and not prejudice.

  35. Guxt
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:40

Venomhed, Madonna is trying to appeal to a new generation, and I think she is very successful at that because my daughter is 14 and love her. It seemes that we have so many kind of prejudices inside. Have you seen the last Rolling Stones´s movie?? Christina Aguilera sings with them in one song . I guess that some RS fans were very upset about that, but if Mick Jagger and Co want to sing with her, who in this world are we to criticize them?? Jagger is more open minded that many of us.

Ohh Venomhed, i think you just made a fool of yourself with that statement…most of those artists have been around quite a while (some over 10 years at least..) and there’s LOTS of rap and techno now over 20 years old that’s considered classic (kraftwerk or grandmaster flash anyone?)

..If your only prerequisite is that it sells millions then McDonalds is ‘classic’ cuisine by that assertion.

There’s nothing about Neil Diamond that makes his music stand any test of time more than any other.

In 1974, while on tour, the Diamond’s private plane crashed over Greenland. In order to make it to New York for his next show, the Diamond continued on foot wearing a sequined shirt and polyester bell bottom pants across the arctic wasteland alone.

He paddled to the North American mainland in a kayak he stole from an eskimo, and made it to New York only minutes before the show. He went on to play 6 encores that night.

When a rescue party made it to the crash site, they found the other passengers had been butchered like cattle. When questioned, the Diamond replied “A man’s gotta eat.”
He then broke into a rendition of his song ‘Porcupine Pie’.

    Investigators were mystified.
