Holy FARC! Do we get the story from their point of view? Do we know where they got their weapons from, or their training? What is the cause of the conflict? In any country where there are armed resistance fighters, there's usually a pretty good reason why they exist. It's usually either due to a brutal dictatorship or another country is trying to overthrow a democratic government for their own benefit. Given the status of Colombia and the so-called "drug war", it's not surprising there are resistance forces.

any real links yet? so far everything above is bogus.
were these hostages not released voluntarily by the gorillas? Or was that a different group of hostages. I know there was a group of hostages released not that long ago that was a gesture of "good will" from the gorillas.

Any public trackers for Torrent?
Or even netload.
ADM, sure I can admit I'm a bit ignorant about Colombian history, but I've read a fair bit of material by Noam Chomsky over the last year and here's something I managed to find after a quick search to refresh my memory:
"Through the 1990s, Colombia has been by far the leading recipient of US military aid in Latin America, and has also compiled by far the worst human rights record, in conformity with a well-established and long-standing correlation." – The correlation he refers to is between violation of human rights and American "aid", which is usually a code word for American weapons and training.
I also found some info about FARC and its beginnings:
"In 1962, President Kennedy sent a military mission to Colombia, headed by a Special Forces General, General Yarborough, to advise Colombia on how to deal with its internal problems and they recommended paramilitary terror. That was their phrase: they recommend "paramilitary power against known communist adherents." Well, in the Latin American context, "known communist adherents" means human rights activists, labor organizers, priests working with peasants, I don't have to explain to you, and yeah, they recommended paramilitary terror. You can look back and say that Colombia has a violent history, but that changed it, that's really the initiation of the massive state and paramilitary terror that turned into a total monstrosity in the last couple of decades."
The way I see it: no matter who has power and weapons, they will seek to use it to their profit at the expense of others. Some just disguise it better than others.
We (america) always have high ideals going in but we side with any government even representing democracy to further our interests and it 99.9% of the time comes back to bite us in the ass. When are we gonna learn. Let the whole thing play out, Farc would have had more power taken over goverment or at least had a big enough minority to where they could be talked with. Let them get sway over the people then they have a responsibility to them its easier to work with them.
@15, are for real? first of all iam from Colombia, to be more precise from Medellin, and i can tell you, you cannot let these people take power they are nothing more than terrorists, simple as that, you dont know what your talking about since you probably ever have been here in Colombia, now its much better then what it used to be just in 2001 things started to get better under president Uribe, but i have seen the horror first hand, my grand father being kidnapped years ago, and you CANT reason with them, they will kidnapped you in an instant go see if you cant talk with them as you say see what happens, i will see you in the newspaper a couple of days later as a headline.
@14, please dont believe what someone outside Colombia goes and says, i grew up here and can tell you that guerrilla's the only thing they care about its money thats it, just a few days ago they killed 12 native indians just fo the fun of it, and they plan personal mines all over, farmers get their legs blown off just trying to farm their fields and more
here take a look here

those are police officers and soldiers kidnapped for over 10 years used as shields if the army tries rescue them.
look at the movie PVC-1 is based on 100% real life, the guerrilla's were asking for 15 million pesos (7500 dollars) as ransom and they placed a collar bomb on the lady waited until the bomb squad was nearby and then they blow it up, killing the lady and the bomb squad officer.
here is the movie English url
http://www.ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?filmId=837
take a look at that plus many more REAL things and tell me then if they fight for the people, they dont, they are nothing more than cowards, terrorist, kidnappers and more.
Nice discussion,
BUT:
Does anybody has some rapidshare links for this docu?
i love those shows
thank you very much for the post and for links !
FARC exists because they are morons who just kill cops and sell drugs. They deserve the total extermination of this country.
P.S.: 16 is 100% right.
The end is near for the FARC, I'm proud of the job the army is doing in my country, keep it up boys this terrorist group should be exterminate it.
@16 I'd like to fin dthat torrent, diid d asearch but nothing available really other than some really sketchy links.
Anyone else? A torrent for PVC-1 would be appreciated.
Sorry about the typing in my last post, I was having an orgasm.
You just knew that when the words NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC came up, you had a better chance of nailing Jessica Biel on your kitchen table, finding her there naked waiting for you after work, than finding an actual LINK that was real, anywhere.
I guess H E "double toothpicks" will freeze over before a working National Geographic link shows up. Lots of hacks and fakes though, bravo to staff for not missing a beat.
Sorry PVC-1 I didn't mean to interrupt… loll Hey, Just Tell Jessica I'll see her tonight and try to be careful on that table…
I lived there, in Medellin, and the way it was explained to me, in simple terms (but it's never that simple), is that, yes, at first the paramilitary was doing "dirty jobs" for the governement and "the greengos" (so then you have a deal : training, supply and cash but you're not officially doing your business for the governement…). Then, maybe around 1980, the US, with his "war on drugs", saw the mafiosos getting serious in their production of coke and didn't like that. The US said our military will help you fight that problem, but stop feeding the para…So then those groups became communist, socialist, against the gov or whatever, but all that is bull is "my version" is true…
That said, Colombia is really a spectacular place. The most beautiful woman in South America, big mountains, low lands, jungles, beaches, really nice people, food and what not. So don't forget that the Colombia of violence is just the sad part of it, not the entire picture…

……AND the best cocaine in the world…seriously.
@29 – Yes, sure, but you might be interested to know that the top quality stuff is exported, just the same as for the coffee…The main 2 exports! And don't neglect the fact that the coca often grows in Bolivia, near the borders and that you won't be welcome in the production sites (look at all the little airstrips in the jungle with Google…). You don't want to get a part in the second episode of that national geographic documentary! So keep in touch with your local provider but keep a healthy gap between the calls!
Rich daddy's boys from Colombia coming along and dropping comments on the internet about how FARC are the worst thing in their country – I guess you have that luxury when 20 years of para-military murders of labor organizers allow your dad to invest further in corporate shares and get you high speed internet access while half your country starve.
