Nappy Roots – The Humdinger (2008)

I know some people out there will complain about another hip hop release, but there are a few other albums I’m waiting to pre that come out in the next couple of weeks, of several genres.  Kentucky hip-hop group the Nappy Roots are back with their new album, The Humdinger.  One of the more respected Southern rap outfits out there, this is pledged to be a “return to form” for the Roots.  So check it out if it sounds like your thing.

Country and proud of it, Nappy Roots formed in 1995 around a sextet of students attending Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Four members of the group were Kentucky natives (Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and Big V), bolstered by a pair of Oakland-born transplants (R Prophet and Milledgeville). Nappy Roots began making music together at a local record shop-cum-studio named ET’s Music, and released their full-length debut Country Fried Cess in 1998. Drawn to the group’s distinctive twist on Southern bounce, the major labels began flocking, and they eventually signed to Atlantic. Their label debut, Watermelon, Chicken and Gritz, was released in 2002, and the follow-up Wooden Leather followed one year later.

    Cool that they’re back. I own both WC&G and WL, and saw them live after the former. Very entertaining and a million miles from the need for racist garbage. Don’t play the ignorance/fear card and you might find something well worth your time. Appreciate the up.

    Looking forward to the new TVOTR disc due out in September. Hope to see it here sometime soon, but I won’t hold my breath.

    Great, Nappy Roots are one of a very small number of hip-hop acts that I listen to, definitely getting this. Its hip-hop for people who don’t normally like hip-hop.
