Synopsis: Directed by the Academy-Award-winning team of Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman (”Twin Towers”) and marking the producing debut of AOL Vice Chairman Ted Leonsis, “Nanking” is a powerful reminder of the heartbreaking toll that war takes on the innocent, and a testament to the courage and conviction of a few individuals determined to act in the face of evil. The film tells the story of the Japanese invasion of Nanking, China in the early days of World War II and focuses on the efforts of a small group of unarmed Westerners who established a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. The events of the film are told through deeply moving interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage, and chilling testimonies of Japanese soldiers, interwoven with staged readings of the Westerners’ letters and diaries as performed by Woody Harrelson, Mariel Hemingway, Jurgen Prochnow, and Stephen Dorff, among others.

The rape of Nanking was a farce! Everybody should know this, the Chinese claimed the Japanese killed over 300,000 in an area where less than 200,000 were. What a joke, come on, more WWII propaganda.

  4. jordan
    April 22nd, 2008 | 13:06

Case in point - the Chinese also claimed the Japanese took Chinese babies out into forecourts, killed them, FRIED THEM ON BARBEQUES and then ATE them. Come ON!

Someone here does not believe there is a Holocust too?

The Japanese up to now refuse to admit many of their war atrocities. Their textbooks do not mention it.

The Nanking Massacre is well documented. You can argue about the number of people killed.

There are Japanese newspaper clippings you can find online reporting on the victory in Nanking and the competition between two high-ranking officers in how many beheadings they can do to best the other fellow.

The current Chinese government for many years has asked the local people in Nanking to keep a low profile about the massacre in fear of ruining the business and trade with Japan.

lol at 7…so does the American textbook. So does every textbook. We wish to forget our past sins with methods such as writing 5 chapters on WWI/WWII while a single paragraph is attached to Vietnam. They completely exclude the injustices done to communists, fascists and anarchist during the same time period. We like to put a bold edge on our accomplishments but hide our wrongdoings.

too bad people can’t mind their own business, and when they mind other people’s businesses, they’re completely taking one perspective of the situation. take Tibet, a region in China that desperately wants independance, China doesn’t want to give them the independance, and people accuse China of human rights. China taking over Tibet, has been mostly benefitial to Tibet, their living conditions have been improved, technology (medicine), China is supporting people with homes and building numerous schools for people in Tibet. However, it is true that if I were Tibetan I would not want to be considered a Chinese, since chinese and tibetans are completely different physically. It’s also true that the Chinese GOVERNMENT (not people, blaming chinese people is not the same as blaming the chinese government) cannot tolerate riots, and take violent means to stop them, their method works, but it sometimes makes matters worse. Now, “killing millions of tibetans” - that is so subjective without any evidence and can be considered statistical propoganda. Anyways,

Say Texas wanted to become independant from the US, will you (americans) grant them their wish? NO, and what if they riot violently, what would you do???

  40. cad
    April 22nd, 2008 | 20:06

Tibetans are every bit as Chinese as what you think of as Chinese. It’s an absurd question. Would you question the fact that African Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, Hispanic Americans, etc are citizens of the United States and are Americans? Of course not.

In China, the country is called “zhong guo” or “middle country,” so Chinese, or “zhong guo ren” means everyone regardless of ethnicity in China.

What people typically think of as Chinese in the West is the Han ethnic group, which comprises some 90% of the population, but they are called Han, and they are not every single person in China, despite what Han chauvinists would like to make you think.

  41. cad
    April 22nd, 2008 | 20:14

I also find it really funny how lots of these people ragging on the Darfur issue, where approximately 150,000 people have died, only about a quarter to a third of which are violence-related. According to UN statistics, the violent death rate in Darfur has since stabilized since last year to about 100-200 per month, which is pretty much the bottom line preventing the UN and even the US government pulled back from describing the _current_ situation as a genocide.

This is the US government’s position on the subject, a fact that the Darfur hippies can’t seem to get through their skulls:

    http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,18035973-1702,00.html

Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer, briefing reporters on moves to bolster security in Darfur, said the current situation “is very different than it was. It’s not as systematic.”

“It is a very serious situation and it’s a series of small attacks and incidents,” Ms Frazer said, adding that all parties were involved. “It is not the government directing the militia attacking civilians.”

  43. cad
    April 22nd, 2008 | 20:26

And what’s tragic in all of this is that the real hot spot in Africa is the Congo, where millions of people have died in a civil war involving dozens of factions backed by local Rwandan tutsi thugs, Mugabe, France, Britain, the United States and, yes, India and China. It’s a giant neo-imperialist free-for all as all the foreign powers are scrambling for one of the most resource-rich places on the planet.

Your innocuous little cell phone is probably made from the coltan ore stolen by Paul Kagame’s Rwandan thugs, conquered with blood and mined with forced labor.

The Congo Civil War has been the DEADLIEST CONFLICT SINCE WW2, but because of various interlocking economic interests, very few will dare say anything about it. The Darfur advocates are the most craven and misguided in this farcical carnival of fools.

Basically, one atrocity cancels out another. 300,000 chinese civilians were killed during the Rape of Nanking. But the chinese government invaded Tibet and killed its people. Therefore, the Rape of Nanking didn’t happen because it evens out, right?

Israel invaded Palestian, killed and subjugated its people. So because of this, the Holocaust didn’t happen, since it’s retribution, right?

People who think that way should be shot in the head, which would have been painless compared to the fates many of the victims of those atrocities suffered. They’re all horrible, and no one has the right to trivialize any of them, for any reason, especially politics.

Next you are going to say Ghandi overthrew the British government in India at the time using AK47’s.

    @49 You clearly haven’t seen
    ‘Ghandi Goes Crazy-Ape-Mental With A Gun’ - 2004
(tagline - Nonviolence Can Only Get You So Far!)

    It rocks ;)

Its perhaps worth pointing out that the China depicted in the movie isn’t the People’s Republic of China we know & loathe today, that didn’t exist until Mao took power in the mid 1950s.

As such it’s possible to see this as more pro-human than pro-china, as a depiction of the horrific violence, rape and murder that occurred at the hands of an invading army.

No doubt the People’s Party are creaming themselves over the possibility of using it for a worldwide big-up china maneuver (hey, the Olympic torch maneuver was a big success ;))

If they do, they might want to look into the concept that the taking of human life is wrong (this is kinda of a big part of the film…) and stop executing so many people/lying about having a big T-62 demolition derby/being totalitarian fu*kheads

Until then, I’m not sure any propaganda will be that effective.

@49 - I agree. I find it very hard to believe that monks killed anyone in Tibet, as Tibetans hold all life sacred, even to the point of relocating worms while digging holes for new buildings.

@40 - saying Tibetans are Chinese because the Chinese regard Tibet as part of their country is not a good reason. The Tibetans never regarded themselves as part of China. Or does the act of thinking you own a country make it true?

So anyway, has anyone actually watched this doco and can comment on how good/bad it is ?
