Mythbusters S06E03 Airplane on Conveyor Belt HDTV XviD-FQM; Mythbusters S06E02 Lead Balloon HDTV XviD-FQM

FQM brings us the new MythBusters episde in HDTV xvid format. The 720p version should be arriving soon, as last week DHD took care of it. The last mythbusters episode aired, ‘lead ballon’ slipped by my radar and was released on Friday last week so I include it with this post. Info on the Lead Balloon episode is here.

Carrie is becoming a fat ugly dumpling, and judging her behavior she’s probably manic depressed or on Prozac.

Women over 20, just not worth the trouble…

I don’t believe this test they did on the conveyor belt. I think the “belt” went slower than the airplane did, otherwise it really would not gain forward motion. And when the airplane stays in place, it will never take off. They just did the whole test wrong. It was just guessing work.

    jeueu:

Of course the plane will gain forward motion, because the whole point of the theory is that if there is no friction in the wheels’ bearings the plane will not move anywhere when the belt’s on if the engines are dead.
When the jets are started up, it gives thrust and the plane will move forward. Easy as that.

Jeunas: Well, the theory as they describe it, is that a plane can take off when the conveyor belt is going as fast backwards as the plane is going forward. Thus the plane’s forward motion should be 0 and it can’t take off. Listen to the point when the ultra light is taking off, the narrator even repeats this theory as I described here.

I’m still trying to figure out what the myth they were debunking was. yea, OBVIOUSLY if the plain gets foward momentum, it can take off. Apparently these guys havn’t heard of aircraft carriers before.

What I thought they might have been debunking was if verticle take off would have been possible if the conveyor belt matched take off speed. That would have been an obviouse no, cause take off is cause by air lift and unless the plane is actually moving through air, it wont take off. The propeller provides thrust, it does not provide enough air to push the wings up.

prolly the worst mythbuster experiment ive seen.

    Plain? Verticle? Obviouse?

Put down the physics textbook and pick up a dictionary.

Meanwhile the girl may know calculus, but she still acts dumb. My favourite part is when they pan the camera to her and she summarizes what the guys have already said. More boobs, less talking please! Cute women should be seen, not heard.

Ok I think some of you are missing what they were saying. That’s why they said at one point that people are going to have trouble wrapping their heads around it.

The conveyor belt was moving at take off speed. You would THINK the plane would remain stationary. This is the whole confusing part. Think of it this way…

Take a little toy car with plastic clip on wheels. Hold it on a treadmill. The wheels will spin freely. Now move your hand forward at the same rate the treadmill is running. The car will move forward. Now think of the conveyor belt as the treadmill and the plane’s engine as your hand.

    Does that help out?

It really is confusing because we’re so used to the idea of objects remaining staionary on a conveyor belt.

For those who think the plane wont take off, think a moment, how does a plane move forward, and even accelerate when its already flying? With your logic it shouldnt be able to do that, since theres no ground under its wheels!

The speed is gained from thrust. It has nothing to do with wheels. Thus, it doesnt matter if the plane has ground/conveyor belt/air/whatever under its _free spinning_ wheels.

    30. jeffd: The myth is that the plane cant move forward, thus cant get up.

Plus this plane take-off thing has been “debated” (I should say proved) long before this episode got out.
