MySpace sued by Universal Music
The usage of copyrighted material has gone probably too far in case of MySpace: Universal Music Group — the world’s largest music company, with acts ranging from Eminem to Elvis Costello — is suing MySpace, the world’s largest social networking site. Universal claims that MySpace users are posting copyrighted songs and videos by Universal artists, who are not getting paid for their use. “MySpace is a willing partner in that theft,” the lawsuit claims. Our music and videos play a key role in building the communities that have created hundreds of millions of dollars of value for the owners of MySpace,” the company said in a statement.
Earlier Friday, MySpace said it was testing technology aimed at enabling copyright holders to flag user-posted videos on the site that they find contain unauthorized copyright material. The flagged content is then removed by MySpace. The company expects to roll out the feature in a few weeks. Currently, MySpace takes down content from its users’ pages when it receives a notice from a copyright holder. Last month, MySpace began using “audio fingerprinting” technology to block users from uploading copyright music to the site. That technology works by checking audio files against a music database from Gracenote Inc. But it obviously doesn’t work good enough…

Awesome.
yet another example at how big studios and the RIAA/MPAA just don’t “get it”. when users are allowed to distribute content in this manner for free, it actually INCREASES their sales and public recognition. it’s free advertising. and it’s working for tons of others, but these big stubborn, and very stupid, old companies just don’t get the concept of viral marketing and just can’t handle the new digital world. that’s okay, they’ll just die off. you can’t fight the internet, you’ll only lose. we are in control now. if you don’t like it, then get the fuck off and quit making any products. that’ll teach us, cause i’m sure we’re going to miss your crap. don’t worry though, companies who do “get it” will gladly replace you and gladly accept all those profits.
