MySpace purged 29000 accounts of sex offenders
MySpace, the social networking website immensely popular with young people, has deleted the profiles of 29,000 convicted sex offenders. This is more than four times the 7,000 the company said it had deleted in May, and marks a significant tightening of its defences against online predators, following criticism from US authorities. All of those barred are thought to be based in the US. The company, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, said it hoped other social networking sites would follow its lead. “We’re pleased that we’ve successfully identified and removed registered sex offenders from our site and hope that other social networking sites follow our lead,” said Hemanshu Nigam, MySpace’s chief security officer.
The new total was released yesterday by two state attorney generals in the US who have been at the forefront of the campaign to protect children on the internet. “The exploding epidemic of sex offender profiles on MySpace - 29,000 and counting - screams for action,” said Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut attorney general. A series of high-profile legal actions brought by the parents of teenagers abused by people they met on MySpace appear to have convinced the Los Angeles-based firm of the need for tighter restrictions. Last year, the service made it impossible for members aged 18 or older to contact 14- to 15-year-old members without knowing their email addresses. Huh, that’s really sophisticated. May be they would need to fax copy of your passport before confirming the registration?

Denver CO changed ‘Urinating in Public’ from a misdemeanor to a class 6 felony “Indecent Exposure”. I did not know, so I plead guilty, paid my fine, did my community service, and was REALLY surprised when 6 mos. later the cops showed up and arrested me for ‘failure to register’. They forced me to register, AND take rape boy classes. Needless to say I was pissed, sickened, scared, and puked at some of the ‘confessions’ I heard.
Of course, I appealed, I whined, I wrote the governor, I paid about 15k in lawyers, and could not get off the perv list. They pad the numbers to keep the American public scared. I moved to Canada, showed them on paper as to what I was saying was true. They laughed at the American mentality of locking up the nation, and gave me a full pardon.

Check out http://www.polarrose.com, they are beta testing a facial recognition plugin for firefox - as you recognize somebody you enter his name, putting his biometric information into a database and allowing a search for other pictures of him the web spiders might have found. Now say you are surfing myspace and get a msg from Earl, you go to his page and mouse-over his face - dropping down a list of other pages his face appears on, including the Maryland sex offenders registry… Once this plugin gains popularity, I can see this whole sex offender thing on myspace becoming a smaller problem. Or you could just monitor your children’s internet activities like a good parent, there is always that.

How about parents stop using computers as babysitters because they are “too busy” to monitor their usage? Or keep the computer in the main room of the house instead of in the kid’s room. But I guess that’s too much effort and shitty parents will always find a way to blame everyone but themselves for their shortcomings.
I’m on the same page as Sterling and bounce regarding parental responsibilities. We must teach our children to recognize sexual predators online and offline. I’m sick and tired of listening to the same old lines from “busy” parents with dedicated long-houred careers. I got news for you, your children are first and foremost. I know it’s easier said then done these days with the cost of living and all but somewhere along the line time has to be made to teach our children not only about sexual predators but drugs, alcohol, life, love, etc. CALLING ALL PARENTS…go the extra mile and make a differnce in the life of your child(ren), teach them so that life’s harsh experiences don’t exploit them. It’s ironic that we all need an extensive automobile driver’s examination before driving a car but anyone can have a child.

ROFLMAO!! I was between a dumpster and a wall in a dark alley. The cop was trolling the alley for hookers. But yeah, I admitted it then, and now, it was a stupid ‘not sober’ thing to do. But I did not deserve the ‘pervert’ tag for it. That is what Canada saw. Not to ‘pardon crimes don in America’, but realized that America is a police state, and the crime did not fit the punishment. What i’m asking is why if you are a sex offender would you open an acount in your true name. It not like its hard to open a myspace page in a fake name. Most accounts on there are in phony names and info.
The majority of accounts on MySpace were created by people that did not use their real name. While criminals shouldn’t be on there in the first place, doesn’t everyone have a right to privacy? Shouldn’t you be able to put in a fake name just so others cannot look you up by your real name?
