MS Internet Explorer 7 available. And?
The big day of Microsoft became true – they released the final version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 during this night. The new version is the first upgrade to the web browsing program for more than five years. New features include tabbed browsing, the ability to search the net directly and an anti-fraud system to thwart phishing attacks. The new program is available as a free download on 19 October, but many will get it as an automatic update to Windows XP in November. The new version of the browser has gone through a long testing regime and five test or “beta” versions have been made available in the last 14 months. Despite this IE 7 is still seen as an attempt by Microsoft to catch up with rival browsers as it includes features that have long been seen in competitors such as Firefox and Opera.
But is it even worth installing this new version of IE7? For me, absolutely not. I haven’t launched Internet Explorer for months, Firefox is my default browser without any comments and there’s also Opera installed as a backup. From my point of view, they just implements functions already available in these alternate browsers. But lot of classic MS crap remained. And built-in search box for searching through Microsoft’s crappy search engine? No thanks, there’s still Google guys. And the last line? First exploit for IE7 appeared just few hours after the official release. Really funny…

Well, the first exploit is nothing you should laugh at. I hope you don’t think, that Firefox is exploit and bugs free, because it really isn’t.
And it’s really not hard to add Google in the searchbox. If 15 years-old girl with pinky blog can do it, you can do it as well. Or not?
you right. IE added all the things firefox has been offering, are they upgrading or catching up? bah.
A little bird told me that you need a legit copy of Windows (via WGA) to install this.
2jakub: I don’t think Firefox is the best software ever, it has a lot of issues, but still, I consider it much much better than ANY version of Internet Explorer. It’s not that long ago since it was possible to get complete control through IE bug, install various dialers, trojans, keyloggers and other stuff – all of that without user notifying anything on his side. It would be foolish to think Microsoft will allow this again, but it’s still much more vulnerable than these alternate browsers, not only because 80% or more of people on the world use it…
[2] Well, that’s a question. I think it’s definitly a good piece of software, as good as Firefox at least. Or is there any that FF can handle and IE can’t?
[3] Well, I’ve got one
.
Well all in all, some sites do require IE to be viewed so I install it with Firefox 2.0 RC3 just for the heck of it ^^
One of the most interesting aspects of the IE vs. Firefox battle is the development of the ecosystem of extensions or add-ons. It’s not just about bugs and features. Right now Firefox had a great advantage in this space but you can see Microsoft trying to catch up.
Microsoft has an interesting partner in Trailfire, a recommended download for IE7. See link:
http://www.ieaddons.com/SearchResults.aspx?keywords=trailfire
But this extension is also available for Firefox. See link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/3524/
I think the ecosystem for Firefox and IE will decide who wins this battle. What do you think?
I’m really curious for the first security comparison between final versions of IE7 and FF2.0 and I’m really not sure about winner.
There are lots of myths about Firefox and security, many people thinks that they are secure with Firefox which is so not true…
If IE7 complies fully or “almost fully” with CSS 2.0, I’m happy because as a web developer I can start coding to standards rather that browsers.
Other that that I couldn’t care less, I use FireFox if merely because it isn’t running as an integral part of Windows. MODURALISATION, Microsoft – it’s what it’s all about!
Well the main reason why I’m using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, is that Firefox follows the rules of W3C
..
And ofcource that ActiveX crap
Adblock, Temporary Inbox Toolbar, Imagebot, Customize Google, Quick Java (to disable that crap), Flashblock (to disable that crap too), SwitchProxy
IE can´t do nothing of that so why use it (can´t even remember when i startet IE the last time)
I will not use this for the simple reason that i have some ethics and moral, same reasons i dont use google or send money to the Chinese government.
when i installed the release candidate, it fuc*** up my printer – wonder if they’ve fixed that issue…
