If it had been me, I would have sued them. I mean it’s not like the MPAA or RIAA ever excepts an excuse of “Oops, sorry, I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong.” They sue first and don’t even bother to ask questions.

That’s not enough to comply with the GPLv2.
ALL sources need be available with every product that’s being distributed, even if you don’t modify anything (GPLv3 is less strict on this).
In reality, most GPL developers (also being the copyright holders) just don’t really care about this(MPAA being ruthless assh0les was probably part of the motivation for that DMCA takedown request).
