MPAA’s antipiracy toolkit shut down after DMCA complaint

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) recently released a software toolkit designed to help universities detect instances of potentially illegal file-sharing on school networks. The toolkit is based on the increasingly popular Ubuntu Linux distribution and includes the Apache web server as well as custom traffic monitoring software created by the MPAA. Although the toolkit was previously available from a web site set up by the MPAA, the software was removed last night after the organization received a request from Ubuntu technical board member Matthew Garrett to take it down due to GPL violations.

Although the MPAA’s failure to comply with copyright law in this case is a delicious irony, it won’t permanently prevent distribution of the antipiracy software toolkit. Oster told Ars Technica that the MPAA would make sure that it fully complied with the GPL, and that the software would be available once again in “short order.” The most straightforward way to resolve the problem would be to post a notice next to the download link that provides contact information and affirms willingness to provide the source code upon request. These guys should first sort their own mess and then waste millions on so called antip2p fight…

It is hilarious that the MPAA does not have more respect for copyrights than any one downloading copyrighted material. Complete hypocrites.

@ #7 – First, turn off the caps lock. No need to shout. Second, loser is spelled l-o-s-e-r. Not looser. Looser is the opposite of tighter. Loser is one who doesn’t spell check their post if they aren’t sure. Class dismissed.

GPL basically says, you are allowed to modify the product, but you have to make the modified source code freely available.

I guess MPAA didn’t really want the GP seeing how their software was working, and ultimately build a defense for it. lol

That’s not enough to comply with the GPLv2.
ALL sources need be available with every product that’s being distributed, even if you don’t modify anything (GPLv3 is less strict on this).
In reality, most GPL developers (also being the copyright holders) just don’t really care about this(MPAA being ruthless assh0les was probably part of the motivation for that DMCA takedown request).

If it had been me, I would have sued them. I mean it’s not like the MPAA or RIAA ever excepts an excuse of “Oops, sorry, I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong.” They sue first and don’t even bother to ask questions.
