MPAA: Dogs sniffing for pirated movies

Two black labrador s dogs, Lucky and Flo sit next to the shipment boxes containing pirated optical discs after the “Operation Double Trouble” demonstration at the main air cargo complex in Sepang, Malaysia, Tuesday, March 13, 2007. Music and movie pirates have put out a contract on Lucky and Flo, the two Labradors who helped sniff out nearly 1 million illegal discs within days of joining Malaysia’s anti-piracy effort. The two female Labradors have been trained to detect polycarbonate chemicals used in manufacturing discs. But officials received a tip-off that bootleggers are using chemical sprays to throw Lucky and Flo off the scent.

Ministry authorities last week said the dogs were moved to a safe house after a source informed them that DVD and CD pirates were offering a bounty to anyone who could kill the dogs, which are on loan for at least a month from the Motion Picture Association of America. The dogs, which began sniffing out disc shipments at Malaysia’s main airport on March 13, won acclaim when they traveled south to Johor, helping officials uncover 1 million pirated DVDs, CDs and computer game discs worth $2.8 million in an office complex on March 19. Malaysia is among the world’s main producers and exporters of pirated discs, the U.S. government and the MPAA have said. According to the Malaysian government, 5 million discs were seized in more than 2,000 raids nationwide last year, and 780 people were arrested. Damn, don’t you guys at MPAA have some dog sniffing for my keys? I lose them all the time…

–”I wonder if you get to assassinate those dogs in next Hitman addon”

    I love it!

“In case you’ve been worrying all weekend about the fate of the anti-piracy pooches, Lucky and Flo, the threat on their lives may be decreasing. The bounty offered for their killing may still be on the table, but the DVD bootleggers in Malaysia are reportedly trying out other non-lethal solutions in dealing with their canine enemies. Authorities were given a new tip claiming that the movie pirates are using a chemical spray to throw off the scent of their illegally produced discs. Presumably the spray makes the discs not smell like discs — perhaps instead like something dogs hate, like citrus.”

    Yes! Fight COMMERCIAL piracy!

  13. March 30th, 2007 | 15:42

You could throw the dogs off with urine from a bitch in heat. Put that in a spray bottle, spray it in the package next to the ones with the pirated stock in it.

I wish the MPAA/RIAA would notice the difference between comercial pirates who are ripping off (mostly) hardworking artists and little Timmy who wants a copy of the new Foo Fighters album but can’t afford it with his allowance.

  16. March 30th, 2007 | 17:44

    Are you fucking serious?

The dogs are on loan from RIAA… yes folks, this is where the
money from years of lawsuits and settlements has gone… into
training and/or genetically engineering two CD sniffing dogs.

What in the holy mother of fucks. I’m glad a bunch of people’s
lives were completely ruined for this. I mean I know if I
made assloads of money the way RIAA did, the first thing I would
do is train two dogs to sniff out chemicals used in CDRs.

PIrated discs have a profit around the cocaine level, and the jail time is so low in comparison even if you think cocaine makes you more money it makes sense to deal twice as many and raise your risk profile because you only get a few months in jail.

There will always be a market for drugs as far as I’m concerned.

But this dog story is pretty funny, I would have never thought of this. And I completely understand the hit for the dogs, don’t they eat dogs for dinner in Malaysia? ;)

    what about a blank CD-R/DVD-R?
did they also sniff that too?
so, if someone send a bunch of blank DVD-R, they will be in trouble right?
    this is stupid.. bleh :p

..and to Cyder why the heck did they want to eat dog there, if it is Thai or China, I would believe so..

In China, we have the option to eat dogs.
This is one of those times we encourage this option. :)

We’ll send the bones back to RIAA’s corporate HQ when we’re done. :p

They used to do same in russia, until one day
someone wraped cd’s in acetone cloth , and burned dogs nostrals.

Police bitched for weeks, about it takes 3 years to
trane dogs, and with one accident both dogs were wiped out.

    April 2nd, 2007 | 14:32

Stop fibbing Brian…you know acetone and acetates evaporate almost immediately. What you’re saying doesn’t make any sense to me at all.
