MPA sues authors of Chinese p2p application

The world-conquering antipiracy organizations took strike to clear the mess also in wild (in terms of piracy) China now. All six members of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) have filed copyright infringement suits in China against Shenzhen Xunlei Networking Technology (Xunlei), a popular peer-to-peer file sharing network operator, the MPA said Friday. The companies are seeking damages and legal fees in excess of 7 million renminbi (US$975,000) in the cases. The MPA members are also seeking a public admission to the alleged copyright infringement and a pledge from Xunlei to refrain from future infringements. The civil complaints were filed in the Shanghai Pudong District Court.

Xunlei offers downloads of popular peer-to-peer file sharing software Thunder5 and WebThunder from its Web site. The names of the two downloads have been translated to English from Chinese. Xunlei means Thunder in Chinese. Early last year, the New York Times reported that Xunlei attracted a US$5 million investment from U.S. search giant Google, in return for a 4 percent stake in Xunlei. The MPA members allege Xunlei’s software is responsible for the unauthorized trading of hundreds of MPA member movie titles, and listed 32 titles on the complaint, including ‘Spiderman 3,’ ‘War of the Worlds’ and ‘Miami Vice.’ Legal counsel for the MPA sent 78 notices of infringement to Xunlei over a five week period before starting the suit, the MPA said. Xunlei could not immediately be reached for comment. Damn, why do these bloody organizations stick their noses into foreign countries?

Martin, try to separate the text you’re quoting and your own remarks, for example by using bold or italics. I know nobody here on rlslog is a real journalist, but things like that are really just basic communication skills.

I dont know if anyone posted have posted or commented on this before but i feel it shows the Movie Industry’s Greed.

“The heirs to J. R. R. Tolkien are threatening to block the much-awaited film of The Hobbit over claims that they have not received a share of the $6 billion that the films and DVDs of The Lord of the Rings and related products have taken worldwide”.

New Line has NOT paid the plaintiffs one penny of its contractual share of gross receipts despite the billions of dollars of gross revenue generated by these wildly successful motion pictures.”

I wonder what the MPA has to say about that.

I see people say “It’s China after all” on the internet at least once a day, yes China sux, we all get your point, blah blah blah… but talking about piracy, don’t you think it’s ironic coming from someone who also downloads things from the internet?

The company provides products and technology, it’s people who use it to share copyrighted stuff. Why should they care? Suing the internet is the same logic, but makes more sense, ’cause it’s the only way to end these ridiculous lawsuits. And how come there’re only very few people or orgnizations sue those big companies for selling overpriced craps to us? Think about it!

Governments, corporations, MPAA/RIAA spend their time starting wars, killing people, screwing people over, making peoples lives a misery.

P2P, filesharing and the internet is encouraging people of whatever race, religion and background to share together, work together and generally improve their lives.

    I know which is better.

All of you buy MPAA products.
If you want to stop the MPAA, stop making them so rich.

Stop buying the crap that their members produce and they’ll cease to exist…But the reality is that everyone on this site is already lost, already brainwashed. None of you will think of an alternative, just continue slavishly buying products. So I think you should all shut up. If you didn’t want to be slaves to these companies you would do something about it. But you do nothing.

it’s one thing to defend our ” sharing”, but any company has the right to protect their business interest from being “shared” without compensation. If I was a vacauum salesmen and I knew someone was “sharing” my vacuums for their personal gain, I would for sure try to stop them. Cmon people grow up, don’t simply take a side because we like to “share”.

  19. Trembling Eagle
    February 18th, 2008 | 15:41

These aren’t vacuums. Whaling used to be a huge industry at the turn of the century, some of the first multi-national corporations of the modern era. But none of these corporations exist or are notable today because they failed to realise that they weren’t really in the business of selling whale oil, they were in the business of selling energy supplies. If they would have moved on to invest in the burgeoning ground oil discoveries they would of course still be active today.

The MPAA and RIAA need to figure out what exactly they are selling is it DVD’s and Cd’s or is it entertainment?

“If I was a vacauum salesmen and I knew someone was “sharing” my vacuums for their personal gain, I would for sure try to stop them.”

But if you were a vacuum salesman, and someone was sharing a vacuum you had sold them, there is jack all you can legally do about it…..

very good, China has advanced it’s military by 20 years by stealing U.S military technology, and there is nothing wrong with that, FACT it is like P2P that the americans are accusing China of. A lot of Chinese Americans working for the big US companies are sending back Rearch and development to their motherland and military departments in China. Again nothing is wrong with this. In 20 years America will be cowering at China.

haha sometimes things like that really amuse me.

    despite all that is said.
fact is what we call “sharing” is just glorified ********. its not like i care but its funny reading comments like what a noble act it is. the right thing to do and so on. spreading the love hahaha.

20- Why can’t they be in the business of both, why seperate cd/dvds and entertainment. It’s the same, whichever way you try to label it, at the end of the day they are in it for business and we are taking a.k.a. sharing their work and livelihood of millions in the entertainment industry.
21- face it, we’re all here to get something free without giving anything in return. You know very well why ppl go to p2p sites, it’s not to “share” and receive entertainment/cd/dvds/progs that they paid for. Most warez on p2p is from stolen sources, pre releases and such that were illegally obtained and distributed. It’s not like anyone paid for their vacuums in the first place.
most of us are in denial and cannot man up to the truth of what’s going on.

22- as long as over a billion+ chinese live on less than a dollar a day, no one will be cowering to them. India has a better bet and their at about 700 million in that extreme poverty. Stop believing the hype.

Check and see if your country has signed onto Interpol (I know the Chinese have) and if they have, then that is the way the MPAA can nail you even IF you are in another country. See Interpol requires you to observe the laws of other countries even if they are not laws in yours. That means that by signing this contract with Interpol, if another member country complains about something, then Interpol can step in and WHAM, you are now sleeping with one eye open to make sure that your gorilla of a cell mate does not brand you arse cheek with his mark. And this is what you have to look forword to for the next 5 to 10 years.

Dont think that just because you are in another country that they cant get you. Just look at the German and Russian sites that the MPAA has shut down via a complaint with Interpol.

Why can’t they just keep their hands off China? Damn MPA for trying to meddle in the affairs of other countries..

If the Chinese government doesn’t give a damn about illegal P2Ps, then why the hell should MPA be concerned? Who do they think they are anyways? President of the world??? WFT…

You know, every time they sue a company I learn about something new.

Its like a free form of advertisement!

Before metalica sued Napster, I had never heard of downloading MP3s much less Napster! I saw it on the news and went hmm and started downloading.

Interesting side effect these anti- campaigns have.

Hello,This is my first post/reply on this site.:-)
You don’t have to fool yourself with file sharing. It is simple and plane theft.Don’t get me wrong,I love it and do it all the time, but it is stealing. There is no other business model that will be created after/because of file sharing.A company makes a product(any product) by investing time and money,a lot of money. The idea is to be able to sell their product to consumers through various channels and to 1st,get back their investment and 2nd to hopefully get profit from it.If this was not the point they would leave their money on the bank and just having rent on it.If everybody would download movies like we do,they will just cease to be produced. If they stop producing we stop downloading.Same goes for all other products we download and use.It is not,not stealing because they are huge companies and they have enough money so we can just take a little(I think they loose plenty) of their money. We live in a capitalist world and this are the rules.I would love to live in another world where money is of no importance and everybody just makes things for the benefit of human kind, unfortunately I think this is an utopy.I’m sorry if my English is not ideal but I’m from Belgium.
    Thank you

    @trench blank

This is a much fairer system -
    http://creativecommons.org

Content producers can make a living without being nasty.
MPAA members choose to be that way because they’re greedy.
Don’t stand up for them and argue on their side.
    They’re horrible people.

  37. trench blank
    February 19th, 2008 | 18:38

    @hfghfgh
I’m not defending MPAA members, the fact is that we live in a capitalist world where greed is the norm.Still,if you would invest your own money into a project,I’m sure you’d want it to be a commercial success and won’t be so happy for people to crack it and share it through the net.It is true that the way MPAA and other organizations fight the p2p world is quiet aggressive and they put a lot of effort in it.I really don’t like their methods. That’s because they are sustained by multinationals and they’ve never been nice guy’s and have a lot of power. But you can turn it every way you want,it is still theft.
    cheers

The MPAA suing the p2p networks and stuff is like the government suing the Earth for spinning it just can’t be stoppped. Stupid MPAA should just stop wasting time, their efforts are in vain. If they want money they should go out and get a REAL JOB instead of leeching off of movie companies.
