Mozilla offered Beta 2 of Firefox 3.0

The next version of the world’s most popular alternative Web browser is taking shape, with a more stable Beta 2 released yesterday. Added to the feature set are some new conveniences you may wonder how you managed to do without. Until recently, test versions for the next edition of Firefox — codenamed “Gran Paradiso” — have been interesting but not altogether stable, which isn’t surprising for builds that were clearly labeled “alpha.” But yesterday, Mozilla sprung the trap on the Beta 2 release of Firefox 3.0, and early on, BetaNews noticed the improvements the organization had long been promising now appear to be working more solidly. Unlike Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7, which shuffled the locations of features and buttons around faster than Bud Abbott playing the old shell game with Lou Costello, Firefox 3.0 looks pretty much the same as it did before. So the changes are subtle, then when you find them, they become profound.

Firefox 3 beta 2 includes some subtle usability improvements in the new Download Manager, which now displays the domain of the site from which the file originated next to each entry. Mozilla also improved its Places bookmarking and history system which is a major new feature of the Firefox 3 browser. While the new Firefox visual styles for Windows and Mac OS X haven’t landed yet, this beta is the first to include the native GTK theme for Firefox’s default icons, buttons, and menu styles in Linux. Even with a few bugs here and there the speed improvement in Firefox 3 is noticeable when compared to Firefox 2, and I for one have had no problems with it crashing. You can check Mozilla’s “what’s new” page for Firefox to read through a list of improvements and fixes in the latest beta, which is available for download here.

i’m on it now, my themes weren’t compatible, but adblock plus is, and there’s a new history pull down menu which i like, bigger font, easy to see, and running a little smoother at 40,488K in task manager, than the usual 58+

If you want the localized beta 3 (nightly builds) go here instead:

    http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk-l10n/

Beta 2 is more stable because it’s final but the pre beta 3 works fine too.

anyone have any idea of the memory usage?

like number 4 said there is an improvement..

mm my firefox is normally at 60k+

does anyone know if the full version will make it more memory efficient?

  9. Improved in Beta 2!
    December 20th, 2007 | 11:54

Speed: Major architectural changes (such as the move to Cairo and a rewrite to how reflowing a page layout works) put foundations in place for major performance tuning which have resulted in speed increases in Beta 2, and will show further gains in future Beta releases.

Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation. Beta 2 includes over 30 more memory leak fixes, and 11 improvements to our memory footprint.

    This asks your questions?

Wow, like it even matters. Saving 30mb of ram is nothing. And from what I can tell the speed isn’t that different anyway. Wow, I’m gonna loose 0.01 second load time per page. They can blabble about all these improvements, but it seems just the same to me.

I’m happy with 2 for now.

  21. me want jackass
    December 20th, 2007 | 12:53

I also want jackass like everyone else
but not the 4.7 gb version. I want it to be around 700mb or less. :)

Oh.. and btw as above said the difference b/w 40mb ram and 60mb is ram is nothing considering most people have more than 1gb ram. I just want faster browsing. I somehow feel that firefox (though kewl coz of plugins) is not as fast as opera :(

will not download this. Will wait for final :)

Big improvements in speed and memory usage on this one. The rendering is better (with page zoom at last), the address bar is better, bookmarking is better, download is better, JavaScript 1.8 is included, the NoScript add on still works… I think it’s finally time to say good bye to Firefox 2 for me.

FYI, there’s some major known issues with this Beta 2, before you run out and adopt it on your main system.

    * Privacy > History > Remember visited pages to “0″ has no effect (bug 366075)

    * Yahoo! Mail will not work; users must use Yahoo! Classic Mail (bug 398381)

    * Windows Live Mail will not work; users must use Hotmail Classic Mail (bug 396259)

    * Cannot drag and drop folders in the Places Organizer, for now users must use cut and paste (bug 405198)

    * The malware protection blacklist is not currently activated

    * Using the ChatZilla add-on will cause Firefox to crash; it should be disabled or uninstalled (bug 407034)

    * Web feeds served as text/html won’t load properly (bug 381357)

    * Non-administrator Vista users are unable to launch Firefox if Vista Parental controls are enabled (bug 396509)

im not even going to consider messing around with beta stuff. I remember when i first started using computers some years back now and an expert told me “never use beta software”

  25. Night
    December 20th, 2007 | 14:49

I don’t know if this specifically unique to my system but earlier tonight, in fact, maybe 20minutes ago whenever i typed anything anywhere in the browser it would type it backwards, the arrow keys wouldn’t move the text line, and i could also not move it over w/ the mouse. I’ve since gone back to Firefox .11 and while i’m happy to be back, i did notice that even though beta 2 didn’t have all the add-ons i use, ie tab, mouse gestures, tab effect and fasterfox, it used much less memory than version firefox 2. I can’t wait to see it go Gold.

I am using the beta 2 right now and it doesn’t seem to work very well on this site. Or maybe it could be my new nvidia drivers..

Yeah betas are guinea pigs, but someone has to do it.

And whoever said saving memory is pointless… noob.

The release sounds awesome, respect to them for actually caring about memory leaks etc. Look forward to seeing it.

    December 20th, 2007 | 19:52

@ Mr. X: Not yet, but who cares about the acid2 test, most web sites are made to display correctly in any major browser, Firefox included. What is interesting in this beta is the solid improvement in memory usage and speed. Also some practical features have made their appearance so overall a promising Firefox 3 is around the corner.

Memory usage ~ 30.000 K with 5 tabs opened. Finally they did it !

  32. robert99
    December 20th, 2007 | 21:42

Well, actually the web designers do care about the acid2 test so let’s hope they will eventually solve it.

    December 20th, 2007 | 22:34

Everyone talks about memory usage being reduced, but what about resources? Those of us still using Windows 98/SE (yes, there are still a few of us) have to worry about programs using up system resources, of which there are a finite amount, no matter how much memory you have. It’s been my experience that newer versions of programs almost always use more, not less, as the authors add all kinds of graphical bells and whistles that really do nothing more than serve as eye candy.
