More privacy tools in Internet Explorer 8

Microsoft Corp. today spelled out new privacy tools in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) that some have dubbed “porn mode” in a nod to the most-obvious use of a browser privacy mode. A privacy advocate applauded the move, calling it a “great step forward,” while rival browser builder Mozilla Corp. said it is working to add similar features to a future Firefox. Slated to appear in IE8 Beta 2, which Microsoft’s former chairman, Bill Gates, promised will release this month, the three new tools share the “InPrivate” name, which Microsoft filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office several weeks ago.

The most intriguing tool, and the one that has prompted the “porn mode” label, was dubbed “InPrivate Browsing” by Microsoft. When enabled, IE8 will not save browsing and searching history, cookies, form data and passwords; it also will automatically clear the browser cache at the end of the session. Other new tools will include “InPrivate Blocking” and “InPrivate Subscription,” which notifies users of third-party content that can track browsing history and subscribe to lists of sites to block, respectively. Microsoft will also tweak its existing “Delete Browsing History” by adding an option to preserve bookmarked sites’ cookies even when all others are erased.

@infectq – about 85-90% of the world still uses IE and it is still the preferred standard in large enterprises.

OR you could just use Firefox 3.0.1…

Why on earth would anyone WANT, let alone NEED, to use IE? It’s rubbish and everyone who knows something knows that. MS are just annoyed at Mozilla as they have a kick a-s browser that everyone likes more that IE.

I remember when it was Netscape VS Internet Explorer. Now it’s Firefox VS IE. Same old history, different brands.

@13, yeh but look who won that war. despite its supposed mediocrity, IE is still around.

hasnt firefox had this for a while? in tools/options/privacy there is an option to clear private data at the end of a session.

To the guy that wants the UK not to be able to monitor him, get Xb Browser. It is basically Firefox with both adblock and noscript preconfigured. The free version uses the TOR network so your ISP and the nasty bods in the government cant see what you are browsing. It is slightly slower than using native Firefox but is fine for general browsing and web based email and the like. If you want to be able to do more you can also sign up for one of their VPN accounts which gives you all the same privacy benefits of TOR but has faster browsing, downloads, streaming video and everything else you are used to on your unencrypted connection. Another advantage of signing up for the VPN account is that everything you do online (not just using the browser but things like torrent downloads, MSN convos etc.) all goes through the encrypted VPN connection so you also avoid traffic shaping by your ISP and monitoring by the likes of the MPAA and the BPI because your actual IP address is also hidden.

85% of windows users might use IE. However statistics are highly damaged because at certain enviroments the only browser you can use (cannot install else) is IE. Or using IE as secondary browser will be also counted.

And there are much more ppl not using IE: Mac, Linux users, mobile phone users.

End of the day, IE still has the lions share of the market. Especially the all important corporate end users.
