MIT students hacked subway card: free rides

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has obtained a temporary restraining order barring three Massachusetts Institute of Technology students from showing what they claim is a way to get “free subway rides for life. ”The 10-day injunction, ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Woodlock, prohibited Zack Anderson, R.J. Ryan and Allessandro Chiesa from revealing what they claim are the vulnerabilities of the MBTA’s fare card. The students claimed they had hacked the security features of the computerized “Charlie Card” and were scheduled to present their findings Sunday in Las Vegas at computer hacking conference.

“The Anatomy of a Subway Hack,” is the description of their presentation on the DEFCON 16 conference Web site.“In this talk we go over weaknesses in common subway fare collection systems. We focus on the Boston T subway, and we present several attacks to completely break the Charlie Card,” the listing read. The DEFCON 16 conference annually brings thousands of sophisticated hackers and technology security experts together. “If what the MIT undergrads claim in their public announcements is true, public disclosure of the security flaws - before the MBTA and its system vendors have an opportunity to correct the flaws - will cause significant damage to the MBTA’s transit system,” MBTA attorneys wrote in their motion for the restraining order. Anderson said the students never planned to show the public how to hack into the MBTA fare system.

Wow #12, are you really THAT ignorant? You do realize that if the US stopped all of their “imports”, they would collapse? No country in the world imports as much stuff as the US.

And the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (actual guys on horses) are just for show. We got squads just like the US…just not freaking trigger happy from all of the drug busts and gang wars your squads have been doing.

funny thing is, it’s the Canadians that are always cleaning up the mess that we leave behind in other countries.

  16. common sense
    August 10th, 2008 | 17:38

You had better be glad we import stuff Zaraf, as if we didnt, your overtaxed country would go bankrupt in a heartbeat as well as 95%of all the other countries out there. You seem to forget that we supply 85% of the aid to 3rd world countries AND we give well over 30% of the income to the United Nations, which is another useless thing that would go bankrupt if we stopped importing.

And the funny thing is you Mr.Magoo. The Canadians did not run the Berlin Airlift, nor did they run the programs that rebuilt Europe and Japan after they went batsh%t and tried to take over the world. Nor did they invent the vast majority of things you take for granted…like the stop lights-Oxygen Masks-Blood bags-AC-dehydrated foodstuffs-over 92% of medications used today-the Jarvic Heart-Lung Transplants-Liver transplants-Heart transplants-Cornea transplants-Diabetic self medication machines that fit under your skin-plastisteel-and a million and one different other things INCLUDING the same internet that you are using now! “Before there was the public internet there was the internet’s forerunner ARPAnet or Advanced Research Projects Agency Networks. ARPAnet was funded by the United States military after the cold war with the aim of having a military command and control center that could withstand nuclear attack. The point was to distribute information between geographically dispersed computers. ARPAnet created the TCP/IP communications standard, which defines data transfer on the Internet today. The ARPAnet opened in 1969 and was quickly usurped by civilian computer nerds who had now found a way to share the few great computers that existed at that time.”-Or Computer engineer, Ray Tomlinson who invented internet based email in late 1971. or Biography: Dr. Leonard Kleinrock is known as the Inventor of the Internet Technology, having created the basic principles of packet switching, the technology underpinning the Internet, while a graduate student at MIT. This was a decade before the birth of the Internet which occurred when his Host computer at UCLA became the first node of the Internet in September 1969. He wrote the first paper and published the first book on the subject; he also directed the transmission of the first message ever to pass over the Internet.

Dr. Kleinrock received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1963 and has served as a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles since then. He received his BEE degree from CCNY in 1957 (and an Honorary Doctor of Science from CCNY in 1997). He is a co-founder of Linkabit. He is also Founder and Chairman of Nomadix, Inc and of Technology Transfer Institute, both hi-tech firms located in Santa Monica, CA. He has published more than 200 papers and authored six books on a wide array of subjects including packet switching networks, packet radio networks, local area networks, broadband networks and gigabit networks. Additionally, Dr. Kleinrock has recently launched the field of nomadic computing, the emerging technology to support users as soon as they leave their desktop environments; nomadic computing may well be the next major wave of the Internet.

Dr. Kleinrock is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, an IEEE fellow and a founding member of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council. Among his many honors, he is the recipient of the C.C.N.Y. Townsend Harris Medal, the CCNY Electrical Engineering Award, the Marconi Award, the L.M. Ericsson Prize, the UCLA Outstanding Teacher Award, the Lanchester Prize, the ACM SIGCOMM Award, the Sigma Xi Monie Ferst Award, and the IEEE Harry Goode Award.

He first became interested in electronics while reading a comic book at the age of six. The centerfold described how to build a crystal radio. He managed to collect the parts, make it work, and was amazed to hear music from this simple device; thus was an engineer born. The rest is history.

So why dont you two morons give up everything that Americans invented since you dislike them so much. You CANNOT as if you did you would not be able to eat much nor ride in a mas produced car or bus nor use the internet nor listen to a radio or watch TV nor have electric lights.

So STFU and take your whining little “I hate America” sayings and crawl back under the slime encrusted rocks you crawled out from.

This is wrong, totally wrong. The public transit system always looses money and is there to help less fortunate people that can’t afford a car. It also allows those that can afford a car to help out with the environment by taking less toxic means of transportation.

Sure, you can hide behind Free Speech all you want, but this is going too far and hurts many people, mainly you and me, the tax payers, since their system will probably have to go through a costly retrofit.

The “hackers” or as I would like to call them, “a$$h0les” should reveal the information to the authorities, not the public, definitely not DEFCON!

Reminds me of the time the NYC metrocards got “hacked” for free rides. just required you to bend the card in a specific spot along the strip and boom instant free ride.

I am not american but I’d like to say something regarding this topic, it’s a general problem and not just in the US.
We should forgive those students cause it’s not their mistake, it’s the government mistake.
Free subway cards must be issued for students cause they are the future of a whole nation.

Yes, that would be better. By the way, how many countries in Europe do you think “went batsh%t and tried to take over the world” … fukin’ lamer. In Europe, it was Germany (the Nazis) and Italy that were the main ones which started it, so those are the countries - not all of Europe. No point telling you anyway, you probably couldn’t even find it on a map.

There has already been a discussion of America, the US, the continents, that Canadians and Mexicans are Americans, etc here so I won’t start that off … but … unlike you, I live in a country that has an education system capable of teaching students past the age of 5, so yes I do know about the continents.

yes, tempPD, it all started with germany but since the rest of europe were such pacifists germany conquered and controlled most of europe and it was like one big nazi country. if it had not been for all us uneducated americans stepping in to save ur asses, you would be posting in german right now and we would all be glad because we wouldn’t have to understand you. so why don’t you go back to school, learn german, get a swastica tattooed on your forehead, forget english, and leave us alone; the truth is, without america, you would be an anal whore for a lot of tall, blonde, blue eyed german boys, and you would probably love it because you wouldn’t have any contact with americans. and before you make some snide remark about my run-on sentences, i’ll defuse that by stating that they are entirely purposeful just to irk you. have a nice day!
