Mid-range graphics in small benchmark

If you’re in process of choosing new video accellerator, and your budget is somehow limited to buy these high-end beasts (yeah, Christmas, all these presents cost something), here’s a small benchmark to help you with your decision. The chaps over TweakTown take a look at four mid-range graphics cards - two from AMD (ATi) and two from nVidia. You can check results of Radeon X1650XT and GeForce 7600GT which sit at the lower end of the mid-range scale and at the other end we have the GeForce 7900GS and the Radeon X1950PRO. Tests in most popular games like F.E.A.R., Half Life 2, Prey or Company of Heroes should tell you more about the right decision…

GeForce 7900GS and Radeon X1950PRO - we have always said as an out of the box card, the Radeon X1950PRO is the better card as far as pure 3D performance goes. It is consistently faster thanks to the increased core speed, when compared to the GeForce 7900GS. Why nVidia haven’t increased the default core is beyond us (as it loves overclocking, a lot!) but it’s possible that it will take away from the more expensive GeForce 7950GT sales. The 512MB variant of the Radeon X1950PRO doesn’t offer any real performance gains and sits closer to the GeForce 7950GT in terms of price. This particular card we recommend you stay far away from as the GeForce 7950GT manages to beat it in almost every benchmark and offers some overclocking, too.

I recently moved from a sapphire x800gto2 256meg (bios flashed and oced to reach x850xtpe speeds) to a MSI x1950pro 256meg (bought a high end psu, hiper 580w from old zoostorm 500w, at the same time to make sure it could cope!) and realised that where i used to play BF2:RealityMod at 1024×768 medium graphics 2xAA, I now needed to buy myself a brand new spangly widescreen monitor 1440×900 to replace my clear but limited crt since the gaming I was now capable of in the same game is 1280×1024 at maximum everything (using a force widescreen code you manually enter into the games desktop shortcut to reach 1440×900 which looks fine!)

As shown above, with FEAR I am now capable of playing the game at 1024×768 max grahpics, with occassional lagging most likely down to my HDD being a 2meg variant (buying an 8meg faster one in a couple of weeks to use as my master drive) But I am now able to get as far as several extensive gaming sessions in the past, in one sitting! This is like when I jumped from a barton 2500 32bit cpu with ati 9600xt upto a 64bit system (venice 3000+ oced) and the x800gto2 and reinstalled Farcry for some smooth and fun gaming!

By sticking the x1950pro and 7900gs together for fps ratings, people have to remember that the x1950pro is a more modern card, and as such you might want to look at all the graphics it can show onscreen at once, where the 7900gs has a little problem showing everything, like the x800gto2 i moved from. Graphics that have been in place a lot since Half Life 2 was released. It doesn’t seem to make sense to go backwards in technology just to save yourself £15

So both graphic cards are amazing but ATI overtakes the Nvidia by few MILES !!!
ATI has always been a super high-end quality card delivering high quality game support unlike the Nvidia.
    Wa a shame.
