Microsoft’s 2Q profits through the roof
Microsoft Corp. on Thursday posted a second-quarter profit that surpassed analysts’ estimates on sales of its Xbox 360 game console and Windows programs for personal computers. The world’s largest softwaremaker reported a 79 percent jump in net income, to $4.71 billion, or 50 cents a share, from $2.63 billion, or 26 cents a share, a year earlier. The most recent result surpassed estimates by 4 cents a share. Sales climbed 30 percent, to $16.4 billion. In the year-ago quarter, Microsoft deferred $1.64 billion in sales, cutting revenue and profit. PC sales rose more than Microsoft forecast, bolstering orders for Windows and Office programs. Holiday purchases of the Xbox 360 also fueled revenue, as shoppers bought the console to play the “Halo 3″ shooting game, unavailable on rival systems such as Nintendo Co.’s Wii.
“Halo 3″ became the best-selling game in the U.S. last year after its Sept. 25 debut, according to researcher NPD Group Inc. In the Windows business, the Redmond, Wash.-based company gained by persuading PC-makers to install pricier versions of its Vista operating system. PC shipments rose 15.5 percent in the quarter, according to researcher IDC. Microsoft had projected an increase of as much as 13 percent. It looks that Bill sticks to the old saying and leaves his company at the best time…

I know there is a video on youtube thats a joke that shows Bill doing all these other careers after he leaves Microsoft like the one I remember is he becomes a rapper. Thats the funniest one. But anyways the article kind of surprised me. I guess all the pirated MS games and OS’s running around on the internet had the slightest effect on MS’s profits. I guess MS is still taking advantage of that monopoly they hold over every laptop and desktop considering how many new PC’s were bought over 2007. In fact 3 companies alone had a total of $16.6 billion in sales consisting of Dell, Compaq and Gateway on just computers alone. MS probably gets like 3-5 percent of that not to mention the console sells of 2007 MS had. $ 4.93 Billion.
I bet vista wasn’t at the top of the fiqures list.

After all those games are played on PC’s without internet connection. And yeah, Vista OEM on my laptop is reinstalled for the 2nd time because of the stupid update that messed up Vista. Cannot connect to internet, cannot start firewall, cannot create LAN connection………STUPID MICROSOFT, I HOPE ALL OF YOUR MONEY COMES TO US, USERS, HAPPY FAST BANKRUPCY!!!!

true true, theres a lot of stick gates and microsoft get for the same set of products and software. REMEMBER however that gates and windows are not the same thing/person windows sucks cuz of old code on old code, bad development an lack of decent testing, but MS still put out decent office software, hence the jump in office sames, and the fall in vista adoption…
also the 360 way outclasses the PS3 in general value and sales still (as far as im aware), and as far as hating on gates goes, he may be talented man with a strength for compouters, but he is a businessman first and foremost (remeber who actually wrote Q-DOS, and who bought it) and a damn good one at that….
and @15 MS or windows aint dead yet, and neither will linux or apple be any sooner. theres a worl out there and a market for everything….

Philantropist? Have you seen American Gangster? Just Like Frank Lucas or Al Capone, Bill Gates tries to improve his image by giving away some scraps to the poor.
Gates doesn’t have to give away 1 cent but he chooses to give a hell of lot, sure it’s a drop in the ocean for him but I’d wager it means the world to the recipients.
I’m glad things are looking up, as an avid gamer both the XBOX and XBOX360 have been fantastic machines for me with the best implementation of online gaming I’ve ever saw. I wish Sony and Nintendo would follow suit, I really want to love Mario Kart on the Wii but without voice chat and proper friends lists/notifictaion I fear it might become old quick.
But can it play crysis?
When some average Joe gives up his last dollar so that a poor hungry man can eat then he is a selfless and generous person. Don’t try to make a saint out of some multi-billionaire douchebag just because he donates a meaningless sum (meaningless relative his overall wealth) to some corporate “charities”. Hell, I could learn to live without 0.0001% of my net worth too, but that doesn’t make me a bloody hero.

Bill Gates is a remarkable man and what he has done is remarkable. How many major technology revolutionaries do you know in computing besides the Mac or Windows? That means two- make that TWO people who were smart enough to change the world…so don’t put them down for being smarter than you, being richer than you, being brighter than you, doing more with their lives than you, and don’t need to be in a stupid blog talking crap like some cheap joe shmoe << you.
You use his products, his products are in every facet of every walk of life, and despite what you believe about Gates and his company they will continue to thrive with you in their rear view mirror no matter what millions of common people like you have to say.
On a second note, it is so tiring when people talk about Bill Gates as if he is the one to complain to. You obviously need a lesson in business as well. He created microsoft, but in a company that employes hundreds of thousands of employees, he is far from the man who runs every damn compartment of that company and it’s subsidiaries. He doesn’t hire his employees, he doesn’t manage his employees, he doesn’t comew up with every product, service, or idea that ever comes out of microsoft…it is a business and businesses are run by people- not a person and a business as large as microsoft would mean going up 500 levels before you ever go to the top and to his office.
As a person Bill Gates has donated millions to billions to charities and has started a foundation built on solving many of todays worst diseases and viruses. He has not only revolutionized the computing industry, but is revolutionizing how big businesses can actually do something for the poor or common folk. He is still human and despite Steve Jobs goals to overtake microsoft with there over priced cheap crap, Bill Gates has goals to solve malaria and HIV and get this–that cheap sob you all talk about it giving more than half of his worth on this planet to his and his wifes foundation and you better believe his family is pissed…sorry.
Anyway, I don’t have time to stay here and write a book to you idiots…there are so many of you….you are the majority of America- let alone the world and it’s thanks to the smart, lucky, and coherently few that progress is made regardless of what the populations of the world believe…sooner or later they will have to bend in and use the solutions people like the rest of us make. Invented the returning health bar! Revolutionised vehicles in FPS’s. Gave us Huge open battlefields(lets ignore 2’s descent into boring corridor shooter for the sake of arguement). Gave us useable effective melee in FPS’s. And so much more.
Don’t insult something because YOU don’t get it. It’s a brilliant game by anybodies standards. If you don’t like it fine, no one’s forcing you but insulting something because you don’t understand it is the very definition of ignorance.
Returning health bar is dumb, if you get hit by bullets it means you suck, if you can’t get to a medic without dying it means you/your team sucks. The vehicles are useless and nowhere near as good as the vehicles in BF 1942/Renegade. Face it Halo is a piece of crap and nothing you say can change it, silly Xbox fanboy.

20 years ago computer world was thriving with many technologies fighting. Microsoft didn’t win because it was the best, it’s because of ruthless business practices. If you remember what computer business was all about many years ago you can see it’s sad we ended up with Microsoft’s medicority that we can’t get out of.
Now it’s all about making your life tied to Microsoft. Like, for example, in my first post (#2) - you can only play new “Games for Windows” with official Xbox 360 controller. Is it impossible or hard to implement configuration menu for gamepads? No. But it won’t make any profit.
Any attempt at even touching this monopoly is met with Microsoft-sponsored (Apple is guilty too) misinformation. See Open Document vs Office Open XML (not so open and even the name is made up so that there’s confusion with OpenOffice).
I don’t care that Gates gives away his money. About every multi-millionaire is a philantropist. My point was that it’s old mafia trick to get the masses to like them by giving away stuff.
I’m not attacking Microsoft technologies or engineers but the management of Microsoft is a manace to this world.

@23 I agree. I am a vehement anti-capitalist for many reasons that wont be discussed ATM - but I agree that Bill has used his money and power for good- a trait almost no tycoon has. He really is a good man. Its also important to RECOGNIZE that he couldn’t have gotten as far as he did without being a white male. Take that for what it is, but also REALIZE that he has done a great deal to offset the white privelage he was born into….in my belief its what any intelligent, conscious white man needs to do. REALIZE that they are BORN with privelage, and make moves to create equality by using that privelage to uplift the poor/underclass/3rd-4th world countries that usually end up doing the bulk of the work in this world to sustain the 1st world’s quality of living.
Thanks you Bill for not being a waste of life and a virus (no pun intended lol) upon this earth that so many are. And thanks to some posters out there whom have a brain and arent the typical hate-mongers that troll comment sections/fourms..
Meh Halo 3 is for kids. Its cartoony graphics and weak gameplay is all I need to know. bf2142, and cod4 (when it gets larger levels and a few more patches under its belt) are still great. I’ve been playing FPS since wolf3d/blakestone/ROTT/etc came out and I think I know what I’m talking about. halo 3 is all hype and it sucks donkey bawls and everyone knows it. I mean, how many stupid halo 3 accessories do you need? A Halo 3 helmet, Halo 3 gloves, halo 3 tampons, halo 3 dentures, halo 3 emblazoned bibles, ….well how about halo 3 toilet paper?….now thats something I’d use. lol
